OBF (Our Bloomin Friends) is a membership group of regular participants having the option to join a swap here each month. Membership is required in order to participate. Please contact Shirley (Brittneysgran) or Carol (veeja3), if you want more information about becoming a member. Thank you!

It's hot out! Let's kick-back together, enjoy an iced tea and have some easy-going summer fun. Sign-up for O.B.F.'s "Summertime" swap before July 5th and please mail your small package by July 24th. You can use a padded mailer or small box. Please remember to contact Shirley (Brittneysgran) or Carol (veeja3), if you want to join Our Bloomin Friends. Thank you!

Send a small item for each letter in the word "SUMMERTIME" to your July partner. Please make sure it's something that will survive the heat.

This is just an example (be as creative or silly as you like with your wording):

S - Sedum "Lime Zinger"
U - Unique ______ (fill in the blank).
M - My Favorite Recipe
M - Markers for the garden.
E - Early White Bush Scallop Squash seeds
R - Red Spider Zinnia seeds
T - Twizzlers
I - Incredibly ______ (fill in the blank).
M - My Favorite ______ (fill in the blank).
E - Echinacea seeds "Cheyenne Spirit"

When you sign-up, please let us know what seeds you like... flowers or vegetables (or both!). Also, let us know if you prefer named varieties of plants and seeds.

Fun, easy games with prizes, too!

Sheri

RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

I'm in! I like named varieties of edibles where possible (Easier to predict the what/when/how of a variety since Im still learning) and for flowers names if you have them OR if not then descriptions are fine, too.

What a fun idea!

RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Sheri, I would love to play "SUMMERTIME" in July!!! Flowers sound good to me...Named varieties are great but I am happy with anything named/unnamed....I love reseeders/self sowing seeds/succulents/hens n chicks/cascading petunias.

Sheri, the spineless cucumber seeds you sent me are doing fantastic! Thank you again. Mary Ellen, your Boston picklers are doing great also. Thank you again!!!

What a great idea for July. Thanks for hosting Sheri!!

I'm in. Sounds like fun.
Named only, please. I grow very few unnamed plants.
Prefer mostly flowers, herbs and maybe a few veggies.
It drives me crazy not to know what I'm growing, but I do make exceptions.

I'm glad you posted this early. We'll be on vacation from the 3th or 4th until about the 14th or 15th, but I should have time to work on this before we leave and after we get back.
Might even find something while we're gone.

Named plants only please, I like sedums, hens & chicks, flowers, herbs & etc.

Wow! great turn-out so far. :) I'm going to post a BINGO game, tomorrow, that we'll start in July. Ruth, can you take a laptop with you so you can play some games? I hope so.

Annie... so happy that you're going to have a pickle crop, after all, this year!

I like named varieties of heirloom and OP vegetables, flowers and herbs. I'm always thrilled to try someone's favorite variety.

I won't have access to internet while we're gone.
I'll have to catch up when we get back.
We're spending the first two nights in Tennessee near the Ocoee River where the guys go rafting.
Then we'll be camping in the N. Georgia mountains at Carter's Lake.

RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

I will do this swap this month. Thanks. Looks like fun. I'm more of a flower person. I plan to grow some type of annual next summer to be put into center pieces for our daughters shower. She will be getting married next September. She's having a rustic type wedding so we are going to put a flower in a mason jar wrapped in burlap with a bow around it. I'll plant it in dirt rather than put it in water so someone can take it home and plant it.

Carol, hope all goes well with your CT. I'll be thinking of you.

Margo

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Welcome Margo! Love the mason jar idea for the big wedding day. What varieties of flowers did you have in mind?

Ruth... I can just smell that fresh mountain air!

Carol... hugs back. I hate the wait for tests. So agonizing. I hope you have some fun this week and heal FAST!

I'm going to work on the BINGO game today. Sign-up anytime before the 5th. I'll post partners on that morning and the first Bingo words drawn. I'm going to try a shorter version this time. Should be fun!

Welcome, Sharon! Thank you, I'm more than happy to host this month... such a great group. :)

Sharon, your partner can be as creative as she wants with your "SUMMERTIME", it doesn't have to be all seeds. I do see that you have some seeds on your "want list". If anyone has those seeds, maybe they'll let me know (with a SECRET email - please DON'T post here)), for a possible match-up.

RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

My guess is 57.

We had a light rain with some high winds overnight. Brought it some much needed cooler air and less humidity. So far, this summer has been pretty good as far as weather is concerned. It is creating a great growing season. Now if I can control the grasshopper population, (organically), I will get a great bounty of good eats.

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Good morning everyone!

Yes, long time no chat...it has been just crazy here. The school where my kiddos go was short on substitute teachers, so I applied thinking I'd only be called once a week or so. Until the end of school I was in almost every day. I guess they were short, wow!

Needless to say, everything else gets put on the back burner (as my gramma used to say) and I'm just starting to catch up.

My iris season this year was amazing! Never had so many blooms! I'm still cleaning up and cutting back, but hopefully will be done this weekend.

Taylor and Billy are doing wonderful. They each won the "With Honors" award for their grade level. They each worked hard all year for it. They got a certificate, backpack, some other little goodies and gift certificates to the local ice cream shop. So proud of both of them. Billy is so excited that he's moving into 1st grade. He keeps telling me, "now I'm a big kid. No more letters for a grade, now I have a number"...lol!

Our County Fair is next weekend! I have to keep saying it out loud to get my tushy moving. I have been doing the Plant Swap there for 5 years now, and I'm just starting to get raffle items for it. Nothing like last minute, lol. I have only 30 plants dug and potted, still 70 more to go. I have always brought 100. And whatever doesn't get swapped the fair has a plant sale and earns some money for kids ribbons. :) And we haven't started our haybale yet. We always enter the decorate a haybale competition. As Taylor says, "mom! we've won for 4 years now. we have to defend the title!" That always makes me laugh. The only prize is a blue ribbon...oh! and bragging rights, lol.
Below is a picture of our haybale from last year. The kids named her Lucky.

Have a super and safe 4th Everyone!! :D
vina

My guess for today 31.

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

WE HAVE A WINNER!!!! Congratulations Ruth!!!

48 seashells in the jar!

Thank you for the photo, Vina. Taylor and Billy are SUPER-cute kids!!! The plant swap sounds like so much fun. How do you swap the plants?

Sheri

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Congrats Ruth, great guess!

Great picture Vinca.

Sheri, I sent you a list of my Bingo words. Let me know if you didn't get them.

I have to work the 4th of July and the weekend this year. But sure am enjoying my day off today.

Its been threatening rain all day, but it's been in the 60's and I've been doing yard/garden work all day.

Sharon

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

I forgot to tell you about a funny play on words that happened the other day.
Several neighbors and we were having our dead and dying Ash Trees at the cottage cut down. At the last minute I called one of my neighbors to add another tree to our list. The neighbor I talked to was unaware the trees were going to be cut down and she just happened to be on her roof when I called. She laughed after I explained and said she wondered why she had just heard her brother talking about Ash Trays since none of them smoked.
Get it .... Ash Trees .... Ash Trays. LOL

Ok, I'll go back to my weeding now.

sharon

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

I'll sign up for this Summertime fun!
I have had trouble with GardenWeb and AOL lately so I'll read through all the posts a bit later. It lets me sign on and then boots me off before I can even get my message posted, usually after I have typed most of it, too. How aggravating!

As for seeds, I prefer named varieties and fruits, flowers, or vegetables are fine. Just nothing that takes up lots of garden space (like watermelon). I just don't have enough garden space for them. Also, some things will not tolerate our heat. Sweet Peas and Poppies --- they might get as far as a green plant, but then they are goners.

Sorry my plant and seeds lists haven't been updated in so long. I'll send my Bingo choices now. Happy 4th of July to everyone!

Jeanne

 o

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Welcome Jeanne!!! I know what you mean about Watermelon. So much easier to buy it, rather than grow it this time of year. I also feel the same way about corn. :) I sent you an email.

Sharon... cute Ash Tree story. I can relate. I have a garden friend who was born and raised in the deep South. Out of the blue she asked me "Do you like Hotess". I said... "well, I'm partial to their powdered sugar donuts", BUT what she was saying was HOSTAS, not Hostess. We're still giggling about that one.

Happy 4th of July!

klwallace12... I'm so happy that you are doing vegetable gardening (I read your member page). I participate in about 2 big community seed swaps twice a year to try and encourage more vegetable gardeners. You should hear something soon. GW mail has been very temperamental.

RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

O.K. O.B.F. Members... let's play a game while we wait for partners (Carol, I sent you an email, hope you can join-in the games)...

Some of you might remember that my favorite small breed dog is a Pug. However, no one knows what my favorite large breed dog is. Guess it and win this pretty Graptosedum “California Sunset”! (2.5 inch pot)

ONE GUESS PER DAY. :)

HINT: My favorite large breed dog is in the Westminster Kennel Club’s “Working Dog” group.

Graptosedum “California Sunset” - Drought tolerant when established. Forms rosettes with white star-shape flowers and bluish-green leaves that blush pink-orange in strong light. Excellent for rock gardens or as ground cover. Needs porous soil with adequate drainage. Reported to be borderline hardy in dry areas although needing protection from wet winters and severe frost.

I found this sedum at WalMart on Monday... they had a lot of cute ones.

I think everyone is out having fun today. I'll be out later, as well, so I'm going to go ahead and post partners today rather than early tomorrow.

Summertime Swap Partners:

Sharon and Vina

Ruth and Nikki

Jayeanne and Susan B.

Shirley and Laura

Sue G. and Sheri

Annie and Erica

Margo and Jeanne

Mary E and Kim

To the new members Mary E and Ms. Wallace, I'm hoping Shirley is out having a blast today with her wonderful family and may not be available until late tonight. I am putting you two as swap partners, but if one of you ends-up not swapping, I'll happily send the other one a SUMMERTIME swap. :) Please make sure to send Shirley (and your partner) your mailing address.

We don't have a winner, yet. My husband's favorite dog is the Labrador. His heart just melts every time he sees one.

Also Mary and Ms. Wallace, please tell us what kinds of things you like (hobbies, collections, cooking, etc.) and what specific varieties of seeds you're looking for, so we can get to know you better.

Sheri

RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

My guess is Bernese Mountain Dog. Gorgeous dog.

Went to our friends last night for her annual fireworks barbecue. The community fireworks were held and her backyard has the perfect view. They were awesome. Tonight we are going with my daughter's fiance's family on their boat to another fireworks display. I am super excited as I have never watched fireworks from a boat.

Going to start on my summertime package this weekend for Jeanne.

Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday. Margo

Annie, I sent you an email. Let me know if you don't get it.

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

I have already heard from my swap partner, super excited about that!

Let's see a little about me...I'm a mom and a wife. I am also a 911 operator. I have no clue where my wild hair for gardening came from but I've jumped in with both feet. I planted my very first seeds on June 24th of this year and they're doing great *most of them* ....I taught my self how to cook and it's now one of my favorite things to do.

So far this season I will be planting in containers and grow bags, I purchased a few flower seeds and bulbs to go on my porch. By spring I will have a raised bed and will be working on SFG! I am trying to stay focused and grow mostly what we eat, since we try to eat healthy our grocery bill is outrageous which is definitely motivation. I don't have a huge preference for seeds yet because I don't know much, the more I read on here and watch YouTube the more my wishlist grows. Kind of hard to know what you want when you don't know much about what's out there!

Looking forward to getting to know you all!! Happy 4th!

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Guess I don't know dog groups If have heard of a labadoodle If that one ?

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Kim (klwallace12)! I got your email. Thank you for the bio. You're the only person I know who is a 911 operator. That is so cool. You're on the right track with your garden. Start by growing your favorites, then when you have the space and time, you can experiment with different varieties. Let us know if you have any questions.

I may do more container gardening next year. I grew a Hungarian Pepper in a 5+ gallon container, just as an experiment this year, and it now looks like a small tree. I've never seen such a huge pepper plant. I'll take a photo tomorrow. Speaks volumes for container gardening.

Remember to send me your BINGO words, Kim. I got Mary's!

Thank you!

Sheri

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Well, the working group she is talking about is American Kennel Club ... labradoodle is not a breed, it is a cross of two breeds. So no.

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Kim,

Welcome! I enjoyed reading your personal blurb. I just started veggie gardening this year as well. I had my hubby take out the front lawn and put in raised beds. I started out doing SFG, but some of my squares are now more like Square Inch Gardening. =) I've been loving every second of it though. So productive and rewarding.

If you haven't already discovered GrowingYourGreens on YouTube, you should check it out. He has great gardening info and often talks about interesting varieties of edibles. I got many of my ideas on things I want to try from him.

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

I gardened a long time, and a long time in one place. But now I'm starting again, different spot, same Lake Chicago clay soil. This is the first spring that I started seeds in the house. The first peppers 110% per cent germinated, LOL. I had to try more. A strong friend tore out grass for me, to accomodate all my germinating results. Three kinds of cherry tomatoes and Sioux tomatoes in the ground, and four kinds of peppers. Planted beets and radishes for the first time ever.

I'm very interested in gardening for wildlife. Anything for butterflies. Birds. Keeping water out for bunnies and squirrels. A little challenging to do and grow veg! And this spring my son (25) and I raised a squirrel from around six weeks old. Don't worry, it lives outside wild.
Two cats with us indoors.

I also love reading, mostly non-fiction. The library is full of good, recent gardening books. Love horses. Won a chili cook-off. Chocolate, love it. Like garage sales or antiquing, or artisan.

I appreciate named varieties of veg or flowers, not a stickler about it. I like to know if something is OP, but either way is fine. Anything with a story about why you like it or why it likes you.

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Erica I have found him on youtube.. love a lot of his videos..I'm a YT addict when it comes to gardneing. I love Larry Hall. I am actually working in his kiddie pool garden set up now..it's amazing the things you learn online

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Carol-Thinking of you today....hope your day went well.

Getting on line late tonight and find we have two new members. Welcome Kim and Mary, hope you enjoy this group as much as the rest of us.

Such a busy day today. I decided to sell daylilies even though it was a holiday and DH went to market to sell. When he got home we had to start digging again for both the markets we will be selling at tomorrow. So really no rest this time of year in this household. The sad thing is it is our anniversary today....45 years. I think I need a medal or something (I'm sure he says the same thing). We should have been out celebrating and having fun. Oh well I guess it can wait until the daylilies quit blooming.

Sherri I agree with you, I have never known a 911 operator but now we do.

My guess on the dog is a Doberman. Since I have no clue I will guess my favorite. LOL

Mary... I love the wildlife habitat in the back yard, too. Wild Florida is so exciting. We even have a little black bear that gets into the garbage every night. She leaves my garden alone. She prefers junk food. Also, I love chocolate.

Shirley! You sell daylilies? I had no idea. How did I miss that? How exciting! 45 years is such a blessing to be with some one you love, congratulations! It sounds like he likes daylilies, too. Shared interests are key. You should actually receive a giant trophy, instead of a medal.

Happy AFTER the 4th! :)
Hope everyone had a nice day yesterday. We kept it low key. Small family cookout, sparklers, and s'mores firepit for dessert. Kids loved it.

Welcome Kim and Annie!! So nice to have new OBF'ers :)

Shirley, CONGRATULATIONS ON 45 YEARS!!! You both deserve medals :D Hubby and I will be married for only 14 years in November. 45 SUPER! :D

I'll have to take a picture of the turtle we're making for this year. Yup! a very large haybale paint turtle, lol!! I love my kids!!! :D

My guess for favorite doggy: St. Bernard's
How can you not love all that drooley goodness.

RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Today's doggy guess is Cane Corso.

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Sue G.! You guessed it!!! Rottweilers are my favorite. In the 1990's I had a Rottie named Harley who I raised from six weeks. He was so sweet and lovable. He loved people cats and other dogs but the squirrels didn't stand a chance. He was so full of love, but NOBODY ever got out of their car when the drove up to my house.

I'll mail your sedum with your other summertime swap items. :)

Sheri

 o

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Sue G. Congrats on the win!!! Rotties are beautifully scary dogs very loyal!

My husband wants to grow sunflowers...those "fireworks" are amazing...where would I find seeds for those?

Getting excited for bingo!

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Sue congratulations....good guess.

Thanks for all the congratulations on our anniversary.

Susan-Those sunflowers are gorgeous..I love all sunflowers.

Sheri-Yes I own Shirley's Garden and have over 2,000 plants, 1,000 are daylilies. DH said I have created a monster. It is a lot of work and you have no free time during bloom season. I think every year I get a new addition. This year it has been named grasses and sedums. I grow Bearded Irises, Siberian Irises, Louisiana Irises, Japanese Irises, Peonies, Hostas, Asiatic & Oriental Lilies, Tulips, Daylilies and a few other plants.

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Moring Everyone!!

Congratulations Sue!!
Yea!! Rotties are awesome! Had one when I was younger. Used to go trail riding with me wherever I went. My parents said they never worried as long as Sam was with me. Never understood why growing up with him. Now looking back I get it. He was huge!! A great big teddy bear as far as I was concerned. Other people may have been a bit put off by his "bigness", lol :)

Wow! Shirley, OVER 2,000 plants!! You are my hero! LOVE IT!! :D It must be a lot of work, but so gorgeous! Are you constantly digging for the farmers markets or do you go digging crazy in the beginning of spring and your good for the season? I can't even imagine HOW much digging that entails. Is everything potted? Even your iris'? Or can people come and dig in your garden. We have a "Dig your own iris farm" a couple of towns over. Went passed it once, but never stopped. Was WAY too tempted, lol,

Have a fabulous Sunday!!
vina

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Just a slight delay on the BINGO game. No big deal at all, we'll just start it later.

Let's play another guessing game! Looks like everyone is excited about sunflowers. Guess the name of this tall sunflower, in my back yard, and I will send you those commercial seeds as well as another little surprise.

ONE GUESS PER DAY

No hints, yet. This may be too easy... we'll see. :)

Remember, I'm giving prizes to the first person to post BINGO as well as the second person to post BINGO!!!

For our new members, I just post two BINGO words once a day.

RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Welcome Mary and Kim. I enjoyed reading the info. about you.

Looks like it is going to rain all morning here, then be hot and muggy. I worked the whole 4th of July holiday and weekend and was hoping for a beautiful day to garden today ... I guess I'll just have to be happy with day off work. LOL

Vina, I'm very happy to have you as a partner, you have so many ideas on your trade page. I've been having fun making a list of all the SUMMERTIME ideas to send you.
I know my list isn't that great but really any flower seeds (will take OP) you send I will love. It is always fun to receive seeds that were the senders FAVORITE flower for that year.
Please don't send me any vegetable seeds though, I have so many and will probably never use them.

BINGO: Hurray Bingo has started. One down already!
The list of Bingo words I sent to Sheri were the things I least liked about summer. LOL
Other games: congrats Jeanne and Erica.
Sheri, so many games already! and I loved the "HOSTAS, not Hostess" story!

Shirley, Congrats on your 45th!!!!!!

Susan, love love love the picture of your sunflowers. How in the world are they blooming already for you? Mine won't bloom till August.

Here is a picture of my larkspur that self seeded in my garden this year. This is at the beginning of the bloom, the area of blooming has doubled. I love it. I've lost the name of the red clematis, I think it may be Ernest Markem.

BINGO WORDS FOR TODAY:

ICED TEA
DAY ON THE BEACH

Love your photos Sharon and Susan. Sharon the painting easel in the window and gorgeous flowers... does Monet live there? ;) Susan.... I'd love to hear all about the "fill your cart for $25" day. It sounds like you have a good-sized veggie garden, too. Please let me know what your favorites are this year!

Kim... I'll post first names and screen names for you soon. I have to do it, anyway, to keep track of who's sent their package. :)

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Here's my Hungarian Pepper tree! ;) It was a bit of science experiment for me. I ordered Azomite powder and put about 2 cups on the surface, then mixed it in. I also used a Jobe's fertilizer spikes for citrus. I've never had a pepper plant grow this huge and be this productive. It's 27 inches tall.

Sheri

 o
RE: Summertime O B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

That is a good looking pepper plant. I am glad it rained on my garden overnight. And Erica, that's amazing you got your package done so fast ... I'm still in the creative and have fun stage. Come to think of it, I like kids' drawings, say, of a horse or pony. Or old photo of kid with pony or people with horses.

I like that larkspur with pink clematis photo. I have some larkspur with a white daisy and they are next to Fireball monarda ... so red white and blue, although I didn't plan it out.

Wow, step away from the computer and I missed so much!! Mike and I have officially started planning the wedding. We want to have it at his uncle's apple orchard and barn next May- colors are amethyst and silver. Beautiful, right?! But my mom is freaking out (from 800 miles away) about how to provide the things that are inherently included in a "traditional" reception hall... like bathrooms, chairs and salt shakers... Oh well!

Congratulations to the game winners. So far I have just two bingo words crossed out. Everyone has such gorgeous flowers already, too, and I'm so jealous of that pepper plant, Sheri! My Tabasco just had its first flower yesterday so of course that's my seed pepper. (The one I self pollinate to make sure I have true seeds.) The cucumbers in rubbermaid containers are growing gangbusters and the daylilies in the front yard are just starting to open, but I only got a single pea pod away from the critters before having to pull the plants.

Suzanne the flowers you sent during the last swap are settling in nicely with all the rain we're getting. The Snow In Summer is in a wide pot and it's especially happy right now so I'll try to remember to post a picture of it soon! And Shirley, just wanted to let you know that Carol and I are working out a solution for her box that went MIA last month, so don't worry.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!!!! Its wonderful to 'meet' you and I know you'll love it here! :)

Happy OBF welcome to Mary (cottonwood468) and Kim (klwallace12)....enjoy!

Laura, so happy for you!!!!! A good caterer can handle everything for $$$$$$$! I have gone to parties/weddings without bathroom facilities and they bring in portables! I have not been to a wedding on/at an apple orchard.....that is really cool!

Sheri, did you buy your azomite powder through Amazon??? If not, where did you buy??

Happy Tuesday!!

Happy Tuesday!!

Laura, that sounds incredible! An apple orchard wedding...it just has that romantic sound to it. I'm so happy for you!

Sheri, gorgeous pepper plant!!

Sharon, so excited to have you as a partner!! I'm just going over your gw page and see many interesting possibilities, lol :) I'll be mailing sometime next week.

Just trying to keep from going crazy this week! My plant swap at the county fair is saturday and it always seems like there are a billion last minute things that need to be done every year. Ugh! Can't wait till Saturday though, it's always such a fun time!! :D

Have a great day!

Vina,

I love your pond. It's so lovely and tranquil.

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Vina-Oh my goodness that pond is gorgeous. Does it have fish in it? We have a small pond but deep in one part of it. We have had several people who get tired of their fish and ask if they can come and dump their fish tank of fish in ours. We always say sure so no telling how many fish are in it. They will come kinda close when they want to eat but real skittish. It freezes over in the winter but the fish survive. Love the turtle and also your water lily.

Sheri-I agree super nice pepper plant.

Laura-Thanks for working it out with Carol about her swap box. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding.

RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

TODAY'S BINGO WORDS:

GRILLING
SWIM IN THE LAKE

Annie, I did get that Azomite Powder through Amazon. I think it's 2 Tbs per plant, but I indulged this pepper plant with 2 cups, just for fun. I got the Jobe,s Fertilizer stakes at Lowes. I wanted the Fruit and Nut Tree/Bush Stakes, but they didn't carry them, so I got Citrus. I'd lost a batch of pepper seedlings to the damp, cold spring. I didn't think this one would make it, but WOW!

LOVE the photos Vina and Shirley!

Missed you for the games Laura (we'll have more). Congrats to you and your hubby to be! I was in Kohl's the other day and I thought, "I need to get married again so I can register for more cool kitchen stuff!". ;)

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Morning! Happy Wednesday!

Yes, we have fish...what the heron doesn't seem to find anyway. When we first put in the pond years ago I had these big dreams of schools of koi swimming around. So, I went and paid WAY too much money for some fish. They got rather large, then the heron showed up. Killed them all! They were too big for him to even pick up and eat...they were all just floating in the pond with skewer holes through them from his beak. Taylor was little then and freaked out. Had to wade in and get them all out to bury them. I cried. Ever since we get the nice cheap .15cent feader fish from the pet store. So far I've put in almost 100 this year. And you can only see 2 or 3. hahaha

We have large bull frogs, paint turtles and a couple of snakes that hang around so I can't blame all the little fish deaths on the heron anymore.

This year I bought oat grass bales to put in it to control the algae naturally. They work great! And I planted plants on top of them. Two with water celery and 1 with impatients. All the pond critters love them. It gets them out in the middle and away from my resident frog catcher, otherwise known as Billy :)

Sheri, I know what you mean I was in Kohl's the other day. I could spend so much time in the kitchen department.. So many cool new gadgets! I need to win the lottery, lol!

Have a great day!
vina

got one of my back flowerbed. You can kinda see my pergola in the background. Kids eat out there almost everyday for lunch. :)

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Wow the gardens are coming thru. I love all the pictures. I would love to have peppers to go with all the zucchinni . Vina- Going to a county fair with a plant trade. That would be a high light for summer. wish I could swing by there. The rains and winds bent some of my sunflowers down. I think I'll cut 1/2 to 3 ft. and leave the rest so the birds will still come around. The ground is so soft I just want to get out and plant. Hope everybodys wedsday is filled with beautiful flowers. Sheri here is the bee balm just blooming, I sent you. I see Vina has it also. But my daisies are done. Interesting about the different bloom times in zones.

 o
RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Finally got two words for Bingo.

Wow, all the beautiful flowers. Isn't it fun? I just love your pond and garden Vina. What a job you have done. I have a small two sided pond and it isn't easy to keep it up. Thank goodness my husband is willing to keep it clean. We finally found a liquid that will help and not hurt the fish. I too put in two little 25 cent fish in 5 years ago. They managed to have one baby a couple of years ago. I don't why not more but suspect they all made it to the other side where there is a filter. The filter sucks them in. This past spring we lost a fish and not sure what grabbed it. It had grown quite a bit so I hated losing it but that's nature.

Keep the pictures going of your gardens everyone. I just might find the time to get one on myself.

Vina-Love hearing about your plant swap. I told you last year our County Fair is in Sept. so way late to trade plants.
I became a Master Gardener this year and thought about asking if we could do one at their facility. Great place and plenty of parking. Can't wait to see your bale of hay finished.

RE: Summertime O.B.F. Members Swap July 2014!

Morning!!

Margo, it's not as bad to take care of as people think. I think because its bigger, its pretty self sufficient. I do need to get in it every month or so and weed. My water plants reproduce so quickly they would cover the whole top if I didn't.

What's nice is I put all the pulled ones in a wheelbarrow and bring them down to the veggie garden. Pile them up and let them dry. I about a week they are bone dry. So dry they crumble! I use them for fertilizer. I don't know if its the pond water, fish waste or what but those plants work almost like miracle grow ;)

Shirley, we have a Master Gardener's plant swap usually every year here around Mother's Day. I say usually, cause this year we didn't have one? I was so busy at the time, never asked why, and till you just mentioned it forgot all about it :) My fair swap has been growing a little every year by 1 or 2 people. :)

A lot of the same people come every year once they get hooked. The like the variety of different things I bring every year. What's awesome is that it all comes from the gw. :) The seed swaps in the fall produce nice little babies for my swap. This year I tried a bunch of Dianthus.... I have Ipswitch, Black Adder, Yellow something I can't remember, Black Magic, Fire Witch...as you can see I got most of these from the Halloween swap last year :) I also have some different Althea's that I can't remember right now, lol.

The turtle is officially done. He's not a fancy turtle, but, he does look cute. ;) The kids are so excited I hope he wins.

Taylor was looking through the entry list for ecology classes. She's entering photography, art (painting and sculpture), sewing, flower arranging (gee, wonder where she's gonna get those?), and house plant arrangement.
I have 1 house plant in my house. Taylor's zebra plant. This thing has produced 8 babies! She took my tea cup planter and planted them around in it. She then used one of my old spoons and stuck it in. Made a tea bag tag to tie to the spoon, " Taylor's Tea" It came out so cute!

Billy is entering art. He made the most beautiful pastel drawing of a fish this year in kindergarten. It won an honorable mention at the school art show. I framed it. He's also entering the house plant arrangement too. We didn't have any house plants for him, but, we did have some hen's and chicks. So yesterday we got a pair of his old sneakers, washed them, and filled them with hen's and chicks. They are so cute!! Little blue sketchers!! So adorable!! My neighbor saw them when she was walking her dog and asked if they were going to be at the plant swap...lol! I have to get a photo of them.

Have a great day!!

Here's a weird one...found this double gaillardia. It looks like a science experiment gone wrong, lol.
