    I spy
    with my little eye
some seeds I'd like to try!

    ROLF!

I finally got the garden in. I actually ran out of "tucker" seedlings! Tuckers are various annuals & herbs that I tuck between the veggie seedlings. I had quite a start this morning when I went out to the garden. I approached my garden from the North end (as usual) and there, nesting in my blackberry plants, was a fawn!! It got spooked. I got spooked and it ran away. I would imagine it was not more than a week old. It was full of white spots and its back didn't top my rabbit fence. Quite ironically, I had notices that my lettuce was ravaged a day or too earlier and thought the bunnies had found a hole in the fence. I think I know who did it now.

I would love to see deer in my yard!! I get spooked when a rabbit is rustling in my garden - and the birds. My dad recently rabbit proofed my yard, so now there may be one or two trapped INSIDE the proofing - I guess until the natural life cycle ends.

On a sad life cycle note - I had purchased mantid egg cases and I think they all died!! It must have gotten too cold in my house. Four egg cases done, two Carolina and two European. I guess they wouldn't have fared well in my garden, if they can't even survive the (nearly) perfect indoor environment I'd created. NOW, I must listen to DH complain of the fruit flies that escaped into the house.

I found a few more odd seeds.

That's some good lookin' seeds there. I'm trying to figure out which of mine are weird enough to send.

I was wondering... I have a LOT of bulbs for Tohono O'odham I'itois Multiplier Onions. Slow Food says they're a rare and endangered variety. I can't imagine why because they went NUTS in my garden! The bulbs are about the size of garlic cloves. They'd probably be best for scallions. Anyway, I know this is a *seed* exchange, but I thought I might see if people were interested in making an exception and I'd send some of these onions.

I would NOT want to see deer in my garden! In the park a couple of blocks away, that's fine, but I've heard too many horror stories about what a herd of deer can do to a veggie garden in one night.

So far they haven't come this far into the neighborhood, but every time I'm on a walk to the park and see them, I'm like, "You guys better stay over there! I'm WATCHING you!" I also tell them that I'm going to teach my cat to hunt deer, LOL.

I for sure can NOT judge whether or not a variety is weird, odd, unusual nor rare. Maybe booberry can help?

I am a seed addict and think I need them all; nearly!!

I would love onions, as long as they fit in the normal bubble envie. I received walking onions around Christmas and they were sprouting!! I had to nurse them through the winter, indoors, and I think they were less then thrilled. They are outside now, but have decided to stop trying to walk - like they'll do it only on their terms.

I grew up in MN and saw deer all the time. I've lived in CO for 15 years and had seen them only in the forest areas; until last summer. I was driving through our neighborhood, where the lots are 1/4 acre at best, and these two male deer came bounding out of someone's backyard about onto the hood of my car. I am certain a naughty word "slipped" out of my mouth. Then my first thought was, I am SO glad they weren't in MY yard - LOL.

The rain has finally subsided and the sun is shining.

    Happy Gardening -

I've never heard of those multiplier onions! I have "no name from Mom's garden" Egyptian Walking Onions. They do like to walk on their own terms! I think it's fine to let them in the swap.

DH & I hit a deer a couple weeks ago on the way into work. The insurance company just cut a check to the autobody shop. It's scary to hit a deer!

So what weird, odd & unusual things are you growing this year? I'm not very adventurous in the flower department but am trying:
    Lavendar Datura
    Chocolate smoke Nicotania
    Irish Eyes Rudbeckia
    Cherry Brandy Rudbeckia

    For edibles:
    Cape gooseberries
    Tromboncino Squash
    Black Futsa Squash
    PA Dutch Crookneck Squash
    Peter Pan Squash
    Fairy Pumpkin
Shrimp beans (pole - forgot their official name)
Kizawana (African Horned) melon - only one seedling made it
    Boothby Blonde Cucumbers
    Thai Dragon Peppers
    Beaver Dam Peppers
    Evergreen Tomatoes
    Malachite Box Tomatoes
    Black Ethiopian Tomatoes
    Manyel Tomatoes

Well, that's some of them! so what's "weird" in your garden?

  • neohippie
    last modified: 9 years ago

I have some Tromboncino squash too.

This year I'm on a Southwestern U.S. kick. One thing I got is Chihuahuan Landrace Cushaw squash from Baker Creek. I figured if it can survive in the Chihuahuan desert, it can survive here. So far it seems to be doing quite well. I've never watered it, and the SVB's seem to be leaving it mostly alone. I've got three fruits growing last time I checked.

Got some Charentais melons, which are a little French melon that's hard to find in this country. Couldn't resist the descriptions of how wonderful they taste.

I also grew some Tall Telephone peas this spring, which I guess are unusual because they're so tall. They grew up to the top of my chain link fence and down the other side.

For beans I've got some Blue Coco pole beans and Dragon's Tounge bush beans, and a couple of kinds of tepary beans.

And then there's the I'itois onions I mentioned.

Of course this is in addition to all the usual, normal stuff like Yellow Crookneck squash, Kentucky Wonder beans, Jalapenos, Red Brandywine tomatoes, etc.

I grew Cherry Brandy Rudbeckia last year but the plant failed to return. The seeds I had saved from it also failed to germinate and/or thrive; on neglect - but that's what plants in my garden can expect. I am giving up on it. I do love the Irish Eyes. Mine is in it's third year. I prolly need to divide the plant soon.

My two favorite flowers from 2009, that are returning this year, are Honeywort/Shrimp Plant and Rudbeckia Maya. I don't currently have seeds from either, but will save some this fall. The shrimp plant actually reseeded!! Only one sprout but it will be the most cherished volunteer in my 2010 garden. Dang if I didn't give away ALL the seeds from last year!! Saved none for me.

Seeds are on their way! It's in a small priority box. So they should get there in a couple days.

Tonight I have to take down the hammock and move all of my potted plants that are on the deck up against the house. We're suppose to get hit with a wing-ding of a storm after midnight. The local weatherman pretty much said if its not nailed down, get it someplace safe. I'm sure I'll be up with the doggies. They hate storms, especially thunderstorms.

    Tohono O'odham I'itois Onions
    Tall Telephone Peas
    Black Cherry Tomatoes
    Parisian Pickling Cucumbers
    Hopi Mix Flour Corn
    Two Inch Strawberry Popcorn

Booberry, I'd take those thunderstorms off your hands if I could! We're badly in need of a good rain over here. I hate to see what my water bill is going to be for this month with all the watering I've had to do.

I'll gladly give you the thunderstorms! We've had 6 inches of rain this month. They say if we get one more inch some rivers, streams & creeks are going to crest & cause flooding. At least tomorrow will be sunny. More rain this weekend though. ~sigh~

I'm am very happy we missed the storms last night. They were predicting damaging lightening & 70 mph winds! I do feel badly for the people in Indiana, Ohio & PA that did get hit with it.

Well I thought I'd talk about some of the weird odd & unusual that I'm growing this year. My Suyo & Kiwano cucumbers didn't make it. I did pick my first Boothby Blonde Cukes yesterday. I've had one pepper plant that was a casualty of our odd weather. The Hawaiian Sweet Hot didn't make it. I think I over-watered it in the heat. I did harvest one green pepper from it. I might be able to harvest some peppers this weekend from other plants. Tomatoes are all coming along. I think Glasnost or Manitoba might be the ealiest to ripen (but they're not all that odd.) I am having fun with all my weird red & red "speckled" lettuces this year. Too many to name.

So what's weird & growing in your garden (intentionally or otherwise?)

Just a note: the one morning glory I sent in is "hige" (not "huge") which is just the japanese category name for "feathered".

Just so no one expects wild purple chickens hanging from the vine :)

    Good Evening Ladies -

I have the seeds all sorted and accounted for and tomorrow will search through my stash for peppers on your GW wish lists. I did have a few tomato wants.

The envies should be sealed and ready for mailing tomorrow night; thus shipping on Thursday am.

I was amazed that nearly every item on your wish list will come your way!! We rarely wanted the same things, so it's all spread out - YEAH!!

Just a few packets have lower quantities, but enough to get started.

Haley's Purple Comet is one example. But, I am growing it in my 2010 garden and my family say it's FABULOUS! There were only three ripe fruit, and mom was left out of the tasting. Anyway, I'll save seeds and can send more this fall.

So check your mail boxes next week -

Great selections and a wonderful swap!!

    THANKS -

    Happy Gardening -

    Hi Deb!

I just got back from a trip and a big package of seeds was waiting for me when I returned. WOW! I am stunned (in a giddy, good way) at how much you sent back to me! Seriously, my jaw was pretty much on the floor when I opened the package and seed packs just kept coming out! There was a whole garden in there. There were even some tomatoes that I have been looking for that had not been on the list of sent in seeds. Amazing and awesome. Thank you so much!

Thanks to everyone who shared your weird, odd & unusual seeds. And a big thank you to Deb for your your hard work and amazing generosity. You rock, girl!
