FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Hi Everyone, and welcome back after a long and much needed break! Hope everyone had some good times and got lots of stuff done! Between all the company and all the rain, my gardens look like miniature jungles, so guess what I'll be doing in July?!

I thought we would do a Yard Sale this month, well, kinda, sorta like a yard sale - we won't be selling anything. We'll just be trying to get rid of some of the stuff we have hanging around, you know, like you do at a real yard sale!

Here's what we'll do:
1. When you sign up, please list 2-3 items that you are donating for the Yard Sale. PLEASE, no more than 3 items.

2. You can donate gardening items, seeds, plants, recycled or upcycled items and magazines or books.

3. Please watch the size and weight of your items, because you may be mailing to more than one person and it could get a tad bit expensive.

4. After sign-ups are over, I'll post the whole list of donated items, along with who donated them.

5. On a first come, first serve basis, you can pick which item(s) you want and that item (s) will be mailed out to you.

6. You can choose to take all of one person's items or you can choose from several different people.

7. If you choose from different people, choose only the amount of items that you donated. For instance, if you donated 3 items, you can choose 3 items, if you want them. If you donated 2, choose two, and so on.

8. Posting a picture of what you are donating is a nice idea, but not required.

9. Sign-ups will be until Sunday, July 9.

10. The Sale will start Monday morning, July 10th.

11. You will have until the end of July to mail out.

Now, I know that this sounds a little confusing, but I'll keep track of what everyone is doing, and I think if we all pay attention, this could work and be fun!

Any questions, concerns? Just ask!
I'll be back later with my list of donated items!

So, if everyone is rested and refreshed from the break, come on out and join in the FOTESS July Yard Sale!
Shirley!

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Hi Shirley, cute idea. My gardens are quite lush now due to all the rain. It has been crazy. Today we finally were able to turn off the air and hopefully won't need it again for a while. I really need to get out and start weeding again. I never really finish the job before I have to go back and start over.

I think I might be in on this but I do need to check to see what I have to donate. I will be back later this week to do my list and let you know for sure.

Margo, hope you can join in! I haven't had my air on yet; my sinuses react very badly to air conditioning, so I don't use it much. And I know what you mean about never really finishing the job!

I wanted to post my list of donated items and here it is!

1. 2 recent issues of Garden Gate magazine.
2. 1 WSed jug of Joe Pye Weed - this is the smallest; I have 3 more milk jugs full that I won't have room for in the gardens until fall cleanup!
3.. Grab bag of seeds - these are seeds that I've bought and decided I didn't want; seeds that I got from swaps and can't use; and seeds that I collected last year-2012. These might be good for community gardens or wildflower beds. None of them are older than 2012.

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

What a great idea, Shirley!
I'm sorry to have to pass this month. I'm still having health issues to deal with and a bit depressed this morning because I am supposed to be on my way to CA today to visit with my older daughter and her family including her 2 year old triplets. Just wasn't well enough to make a 12 hour trip and worried about how I might fare once I got there. It has been over a year since I saw them so all I can say is I hope I get well soon!
We are also getting rain every few days and i love it! The plants are having the best summer ever even though I can't get out there to tend to them.
Have a safe and happy 4th of July!
Jeanne

Hi Everybody! I hope someone, somewhere had sunshine and warmth today. We didn't. For the 10-11th day in a row, Monroe had rain. It poured. All day. Still is. Nuff said.

In any event, Welcome to the Yard Sale, Alanna and Vina! I would like to have all three of those Iris's, but we're not having early bird specials, so I'll just have to wait it out!'

Jeanne, I'm so sorry your trip didn't work out. I know what it feels like to be so far away from family. Not fun. However, I am glad you are taking it easy this month. Wishing you good health!

Ruth, Camping sounds like fun. Where are you going?

Hope both of you come in and chat with us, during July.

We should probably have a game.
Wonder if I would remember to post it?
I'll see what I can come up with!

Wishing everyone a warm, dry day tomorrow, with sunshine!
Shirley!

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

So pretty Vina!

Here are my yard sale items. If no one picks them up, it's back to the garage.

#1 Persian Shield, (Strobilanthes dyerianus), 2 plants. They just never made it to ground.
#2 Vigna caracalla, fragrant corkscrew vine, also just did not get planted out.
#3 Daylily Strutter's Ball, nice division.

#1 and #2

That's where I'm from, and we try to go once a year to camp with family & friends.

Aw, shoot, now I want all of Alana's yard sale stuff. I'm going to have to get a bit selective!

Sounds like a great time, Ruth! And quite a trip for you, isn't it?

Well, it didn't rain here today - yet. But not to worry, they're predicting rain for the rest of the week. Drat.

Thought you all might like to see a pic of my Chianti Violas, which are doing quite well, despite the rain. This cooler weather is great for pansies/violas.
Talk to ya all tomorrow!

Have a great one!

Wow! A yard sale I don't have to get up at the crack of dawn for! I'm not the early bird shopper, not even on Black Friday. Here are my 3 items:

1. 6x12" metal wall hangin

2. small garden flag. Just the flag, not flag stand.

Wanted to share a few pictures of a flower bed I've been working on in a public park. This used to be 95% weeds.
Here is the flower bed early this spring. Many things came back I planted last year.

Now look what came up volunteer--milkweed! I know there are too many/too large. After they bloom I will pull some out, but the pollinators love them. Hoping for more butterflies in the park!.

Here are the bachelor buttons that came up volunteer from last year's plants. Love it!

One more when the dianthus was in full bloom.

Oh! I just noticed someone new posting...

drb444444, if you are interested in joining the FOTESS (Friends of the Earth Simple Swaps) swap group, please contact Shirley/sjc48. She is one of our hostess' and can fill you in on the membership details.

Yea, Vina, my thoughts exactly! Curious as to when the "early birds" can start hitting the yard sales.

Shirley, don't work too hard!

Yesterday was a holiday for us. DH and I spent the day at home, piddling around the house. One of the things we did was upcycle a plastic 55 gal barrel. We are using it to catch the AC condensate, which leaks out 5 gallons of water a day during the summer. Next, we hooked up a drip irrigation hose, buried it beneath the grass, and ran it 20 ft to the 300 sq ft side garden which holds our tomatoes, summer squashes, and gourds/pumpkins this year. Tomorrow we will lay out the drip hose and see how much water gravity will feed through it. It's been dry as a bone for us in June!! Only 2 inches of rain the whole month, with the last rain on June 9th. It finally rained today. The plants are happy and I'm happy, too!

Hey Everybody! TGIF, for real!

Vina, the Yard Sale will start at 7am, Monday. I'll post the complete list of yard sale stuff on Sunday, so we all have time to make our choices. I've already made mine, so don't anyone chose Vina's------, or Alana's -----, or Heidi's -----, or Katie's-----oops, one too many there. You're right, Vina, this is going to be tough!

All of our posts are dated and timed, so that's how we'll determine who gets what, in case several people choose the same thing. If you lose out on one item, come on back in and choose another! We'll just keep going until everything is gone.

Sign-ups aren't over until Sunday, so there is still time to join in.

Katie, I emailed rrrrrrr, haven't heard from her yet.
And what a neat contraption! Wish I could send you some of the rain we've been getting. Please! Enough is enough! I need to weed!

Have a great weekend, talk to ya all tomorrow!
Shirley!

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Katie, good idea. I also wish I could send some of the rain we have had to you. It has rained every day at some point for the last week or more. The forecast shows at least a 20% or more chance each day for the following week as well. Today it was just a little bit but this afternoon, several cold air funnels were spotted causing some freak outs.

Shirley, I have been working a lot due to inventory which we do very old school. Each item is hand counted then we have to do the totals for each company. I have even brought some figures home to add up. I thought I was going to go crazy. Anyway, due to that and the loss of my beloved cockatiel, Squawk, I have had a bad day today. He just started breathing heavy and shivering and within an hour, he was dead. This is the day I had planned to decide what to choose to post. I have to work tomorrow so I am going to be one of those late posters on Sunday. I don't work that day so will be deciding by early afternoon.

Margo, so sorry about Squawk. Take care and take your time with the swap. I'll add your Yard Sale Stuff on, whenever you post it.

Losing a pet is hard. I've never been sure how they become such a big part of your life. I still miss Kitty, who passed 7 years ago.

Well, off to buy a new drip pan for the large burner on my stove. Looks like more rain here today. Hope it clears by tomorrow. I've got quite a mess going on out there!

Have a good day,
Shirley!

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Margo, our animals love us unconditionally and it's so hard to lose them. As a society we expect grieving to be short and we often don't allow for pets. So take your time and allow yourself to grieve in your own way. We understand.
Shirley, I'll take some of your rain, too. We are so much better off than we were last year, but we're still the big red bulls eye on the map of 'drought' out here in Nebraska. Need to build up those aquifers.
Heidi

Happy Sunday!
Today is the last day for signups for this swap!
I'll be posting the complete Yard Sale list this evening, so there is still time to join in.

The Yard Sale starts tomorrow, Monday, at 7am. I start work at 8, hopefully I'll have time to choose my sale items before I head in! If not, I'll have to wait until noon and everything I want will be gone - AGGGGHHH!!

Off to make sense of the Jungles before it starts to rain again. This is getting silly. Not that I'm complaining. I know you are on the other end of this, Heidi, wish I could send you some of this rain!
Have a great day,
Shirley!

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Margo - I'm sorry to hear about your pet. It's hard to lose one, especially so suddenly.

I am going to have to skip out on this one... I am struggling with finding anything this time, and my focus isn't there. I am losing my job this fall, so preparing for that is taking up more time than I would like (job search, dr appts, etc). At least I was given advanced notice so I can take some time to prepare.

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Ok, made my decision but only offering two so know I will only make two picks tomorrow. I walked my gardens and found I really need to get out and weed. I also found that so many of my plants are just too big to dig up and mail. We have had so much rain that both the plants and the weeds have gone out of control.

#1. A chocolate mint and a chocolate ajuga plant.

#2. A book put out by Miracle Gro called Water Gardens, simple steps to building garden pools and fountains. This book is brand new. I actually bought two, one for myself and one to put away for an occasion just like this. It is 95 pages and spiral bound and is a "waterproof book". You can check it out on ebay if you want to see what it looks like. it is a very nice book.

Shirley, will you make the choices to be in rounds or do we choose our choices all at once? Maybe rounds will give early workers a better chance.

Gotta go do some garden clean up before the next round of rain. Margo

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Margo~So sorry for the loss of your pet. I'm glad you decided to participate. I'm going to join in on the yard sale, too. Here are my offerings:
1. 10 (unused) metal botanical labels-most are in perfect condition, but a couple have some discoloration around the edges
2. 3" pot Strawberry 'Toscana'-beautiful & yummy, zones 5-9
3. 10 packs 2013 seeds that I have duplicates (and triplicates!) of..they include 5 tomato varieties- 'Amana Orange', 'Aunt Ruby's German Green', 'Opalka' (my favorite), 'Cherokee Purple', 'Indigo Rose' and 5 annual flower varieties-Dahlia variabilis 'Sunny Reggae', Zinnia elegans 'Oriole', Celosia argentea var. plumosa 'Thompsonii Magnifica', Job's Tears (Coix lacryma-jobi) & Black Peony Poppy (Papaver paeoniflorum).
It's been hot, hot here and things are beginning to wilt, but it looks as if we may get a thunderstorm soon.
I really love looking at everyone's flower & garden pics. Before I forget to ask, has anyone else noticed a tremendous number of bumble bees this year?

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

So many great items! Not bad for a virtual yard sale.
I will be looking in before I go to the PO to pick up my shipment of baby chicks.
I know. I could hatch my own, but that gives me a big, hard to give away rooster surplus. I ordered some new girls-my older hens are beginning to lay fewer eggs.

Sorry about Squawk Margo. I had one named Bean for years, named after my mother.

See you in the AM,
Alana

They are trying to locate them and I may get them tomorrow. Poor poor girls.

Alana, how awful, THAT is hard to believe. How long were they in transit?
Shirley

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Oh no, lost baby chicks does not sound good. How do you lose a box of chicks? Has anyone ever been in the post office when they had baby chicks in there? So noisy so how could you not locate them?

Wow, the picking sure went fast. I was up early this morning so was able to be the first. I think everyone did some good picking and hope you are all happy with your choices. This was a great idea Shirley and maybe we can do it again in the future.

I wanted to let Katie and Janine know I have both of your addresses. Hope they find those chicks Alana.

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Poor little chicks...hope they make it home safe and sound.

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Wow! You gals are very intense.
I would like:
strawberry plant from Janine (my 13-year-old has her own strawberry bed. We put out little red beads which tricked the birds and when the real strawberries came they didn't eat the strawberries.)
Fragrant Corkscrew Vine from Alana
Sky Hooks Iris from Vina

Heidi

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

The chicks have been on the road since Friday. Margo, you are right about the noise they make. The fact that they've escaped notice is worrisome.
We'll see. The hatchery has offered to replace or refund if necessary, but I am not looking forward to opening a box of dead peeps. Fingers crossed...

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

I just got a call that my birds are found and chirping is coming from the box. Someone is going to meet me behind the local post office with them in about an hour. Maybe all will be well.

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Evening!

Sorry I missed the Pye :) I'll pick the Jazz Echo Iris...poor baby can't be the last one.

Shirley, I'd love to send you some Grapesicle! You don't need to send me your extra Joe...I have more than enough stuff, lol. We just had our plant swap for the county fair a couple of weeks ago. I brought 100 plants...thankfully didn't bring that many home with me, lol. I did find some coral bells that looked promising. Have no idea what color they are. Surprises are the best!

Alana, good luck with your babies. Don't know how anyone could lose baby birds? Keep us posted.

Took some pic's of my daylilies today :) LOVE, love, love them! This is one that Taylor and I wintersowed from seed 3 years ago. I love the green throat! :)

Have a super night!

whoa-ho! Time to play catch up on all the posts. I do believe that today may have the record for the most posts to a FOTESS thread in a single day ever!!

Hahaha, poor little ole Jazz Echo. The picture doesn't do it justice. It gave me a beautiful coppery-colored bloom this spring. I find it funny that 2 of my items were the very first to go; and 1 of my items was very last.

Alana, what rotten luck about your little chickies. I hope everything turns out ok. At least the weather is warm. Here's a story of one of my experiences: about 15 years ago, I ordered a whole pile of chickies in February. The post office was supposed to hold them and give me a call when they arrived so I could drive up and get them. Well, the idiots sent them out with the mail carrier, who proceeded to drive around delivering mail with the chickies riding around in the bed of her truck! In FEBRUARY! Half of them died :( I ended up reading them the riot act and then some for animal abuse.

I am quite sure that I have everyone's address. Plan to send out packages this week. I'll send out DC #s when I get em.

Shirley, this swap has really cracked me up. I don't know exactly why, but I've found it to be super funny. Maybe it should be a July (or semi-annual) tradition.

Here's a photo of one of my blazing stars (Liatris spicata) with a painted lady butterfly.

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Beautiful flower pics girls. I need to get some pictures of my garden taken. With all the rain, the plants and blooms are much bigger this year. I am afraid with all the rain we are getting, the plants are going to start dieing due to so much water. Their feet just can't dry out.

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Your story gets better and better.
It's like you've ordered bootleg chickies. "Meet you out back after the boss leaves," whispered the uniformed worker as she swiped her badge and gave 'Lana the "shhh" sign before she tiptoed out.
'Lana (Your dual personality is 'Lana.) hung out at the saloon trying to look casual, but they all knew she was either there to play poker or...something worse.
Ben Smith, 6th grade know-it-all, heard strange sounds coming from the USPS. He told his mother who told him if he ever repeated it she'd wash his mouth out with soap.

Lana climbed up into her SUV with her darkly tinted windows, lit a cigar, and let everyone get one last look before she made her....connection!

Beautiful picture, Katie! What kind of camera? That is REALLY a good shot! And I'm glad the swap brought a smile and giggle.

Margo, I agree, my plants are looking very waterlogged, my hanging baskets, especially, are looking kind of dismal. We had two major T-storms come thro this afternoon, with high, slanting winds. It's supposed to clear up by Wednesday, sure hope so!

Vina, would gladly send the Joe Pye Weed. And I've been wanting to ask: did the Partridge Pea come back for you this year? Mine didn't, the squirrels nailed them over the winter. I'm going to WS some more this winter.

Heidi, did that really work? The red beads? How clever! Need to tell my brother bout that; he is continually griping about the birds in his strawberry patch, kind of like me, with the squirrels!

Janine, Alana and Katie, have your addresses, plan on mailing out on Wednesday or Thursday.

Janine, hope you enjoy the mags! I get three different gardening magazines, which is good, but they sure stack up quick!

Alana, hope the chicks made it home safe, let us know!

Bedtime, I'll post the list of who sends to who, just in case, tomorrow!
Shirley!

Always kinda figured Alana for a dual, maybe even quadruple personality, but not the cigar!

I could be wrong on all counts!

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Yes, the red beads worked. Also said to hang red xmas bulbs on your tomato cages to keep birds off of tomatoes, too. I haven't had that trouble...yet, but I'm looking for some bulbs at garage sales! Did anyone want to offer up red xmas bulbs on this yard sale? lol

Shirley, believe it or not, I took that photo with my iPhone! I carry it everywhere in my back pocket, and readily use it to snap random and unexpected photos! LoL

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Heidi, my father's family all call me Lana, feels perfectly natural to see it that way online.
Shirley, I did try cigars, but I really enjoyed a pipe for a number of years.
My birds were left behind at the distribution center. Thank goodness a postal worker drove them to my local PO. I don't know if that was at the behest of the postal service, or if he volunteered out of concern for the birds, but either way, I am grateful.
Katie, I had a similar problem with winter ordered birds a few years back, which is one reason I opted for the hottest part of the year this time.
Busy morning, but I will post a photo later. All but one seems to be doing well.

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

I believe I have everyone's addy as well. Will give it a quick double check though.

Katie, I'll give the Jazz Echo a good home :) I actually have a spot perfect for it.

Shirley, since I'm already sending you the Sans Souci and Grapesicle I'd love to "re-home" you some of the Partridge Pea. Mine has exploded! I have the original clump which has happily migrated all over my rock garden :) I've kept it in a few locations, because its just so pretty! I even dug up 4 plants for the local plant swap here. You'll be happy to know they were the first to go. No one had heard of it, but, what helped is I had the picture of it from my garden...instant LOVE :D!

It has been very wet here, raining just about every day for the last month. Yesterday, I was so fed up with the rain, I was out in it weeding. So many weeds!! I'm hoping for some dry weather this weekend to dig and mail.

Alana, so glad your little ones have arrived safely. What kind of chickies are they?

I've been giving some serious thought the last couple months to getting a couple of peacocks. Has anyone ever raised these? The kids have been begging for another pygmy goat as well, lol! They fell in love with one at the fair. And the lady who was showing it was like, "OH YEAH! She's for sale"...UGGHHH!

2 cats, 2 guinea pigs, 2 10 gallon fish tanks, 1 65 gallon tank...the pooh and water changes...:D

Talk to you later!
vina

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

This group is so great.
Shirley, they're sandwich tomatoes.
Alana was so sweet. She said the corkscrew vine wouldn't do so great in my area and she offered me a pink bee balm. How great! My bee balm just started to take off.
My cousins had peacocks. They had a bit of a temper, but my cousins thought they were great. They didn't turn their backs on the male. I think that's one of the things my aunt was glad to see go when the kids flew the nest.

Alana, glad the chicks made it! Please post pics! I smoked little black pencil type cigars for a while. Had to quit because they were so strong.

Katie, that Iphone (?) takes better pics than my canon sx20. I kid you not!

Heidi, sorry, all I have are the cherry and grape size red Christmas balls. No plum either. Bummer.

Well, today is supposed to be the last day of high humidity and T-storms for Monroe. Lord, I hope it's true. I haven't had very many butterflies this year, partly because of all the rain. Lots of BST cats tho.

Vina, thank you! A Pea plant would be greatly appreciated! If it ever stops raining, I am clearing one of my side beds, and the Pea will have a home there! Glad they sold well!

Drat, back to work.
Shirley!

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Vina, I am wondering who takes care of all these critters. It is always easy for the kids to want to bring home cute furry friends and then they can't be found when it is time to clean out and feed those cute little things. LOL

Lana, glad those little chirpers were found. My husband and I are thinking of getting a small chicken coop for just a couple chickens but still not sure. Are still looking into it.

My packages are done and we are on the way to the post office.

No fatalities thus far. Vina, these are all breeds I already have or have had; Polish, Turken, Cochin, Aracauna. They are all friendly breeds that don't mind being carried around under your arm now and then, which I like to do.
The first photo is many in the group. The second photo shows the one that has won my heart already, a tiny black Turken in the right corner. She is the runt of the crop, but plucky and active and does not allow herself to be ignored or mistreated.
Once they all have names, they will be family, lol

My girl.

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Holy Cow! Those are the CUTEST things! The little girl has some extra special good looks! :)

Margo, I'm the designated pooper scooper in this house, lol. My hubby 24 years ago, got a shovelnose catfish for our large tank...24 years later...he's still HERE! His name is Charles. I've been taking care of him F~O~R~E~V~E~R. He is the only fish in the 65 gallon tank, because he eats everything else. The 10 gallons are in Taylor's and Billy's rooms. Yes, I clean their tanks every week doing a water change. They are responsible for feeding every day. What's nice is I don't have to remind them. They just do it. The "boys", our 2 guinea pigs are also in my daughters room. Dozer and Cash are only 2 months old. They are adorable! And the sweetest little guys! She cleans them 2 times a day. She has a c&c cage so you just need to sweep the poop up with a little broom and dust pan. I feed them their veggie platter twice a day and change their vitamin water everyday. They are some extra work.

And the old addage is true...dogs have owners, cats have staff. They don't normally go outside. However, Kiwi did sneak out about 4 weeks ago, and didn't she get into a fight with another cat! One vet trip and a whole lot of moolah later. She has stitches and a drain in her neck! Needless to say she has NOT tried to run out since.

A couple of weeks ago, we did have a terrible loss. My Tenn.Walker, Boogie, that I've had for 15 years had to be put to sleep. :( He was 26 years old and had terrible arthritis. During one of the more horrible storms that we had, he took a horrible fall coming in from the pasture. Cut the backs of his legs and his knees. He injured himself horribly! Then he fell again the next day and couldn't get back up :( My poor boy is finally at peace. Every time I think about I start to cry.

I've been spending more time in the garden, and I do believe I am a Daylily addict...it just sort of sprang up on me. I knew I was a member of iris addicts anonymous, lol...heck! I could be the president. :) But, daylilies sort of crept up.

Here is one of my new favorites...
Eggplant Ecstasy

2 guys from the city came and helped me with mulch on the city beds. It looks so great! What I did in an hour with a laundry basket and a shovel they did in 6 minutes. I love men, trucks and muscle! They were so nice.

Good grief, Alana, how many did you get?
I'm glad they all survived. I know absolutely nothing about chickens, so I googled "chicken breeds", sure are a lot of them. Some are quite beautiful, who knew?! Thanks for sharing! What are the little "masked" ones, in the first picture? Are they all "egg layers?" The wiki article divided them into all sorts of categories.

Okay, I have to tell you all that I have a real problem with "crap". My babies, the hamsters, Kitty, Fran's hunting dogs, Vin and Will, you name it, I'll gag and/or puke over it.
So, my daughter got Kitty for her 12th B-day. For the next 6 years, all was bliss. She loved the cat, the cat loved her, Chris fed, watered, played with, helped birth the first litter of kittens, AND cleaned the litter box! All of a sudden, at age 18, she finished school and went off to college, leaving me with the cat, which wasn't a bad thing, but she left the litter box too. What a schlimeil! My stomach was in knots for a month. The most important thing I learned was this: If you do not clean the litter box, the cat won't use it. However, she will use the rug right beside your bed. Didn't take me long to get the hang of it, after that! Still gag, tho.

And after she passed, I got two more - makes ya wonder!

Vina, the daylily is beautiful! Never really got into them, but I am really trying with Iris's, mainly because of my mom, who grew them effortlessly. Wish I would have paid attention!

Janine, thanks for posting, boy, you are on the ball! I've got yours packed up, also Alana's, need to get the JoePye weed bundled up, and Tabitha's new outfits for kindergarten and then I'll make the trek down to the PO! Sometime this week, I promise.

Wonder how Jeanne is doing? Hope everything is going well with her, and that she will post soon, with an update!

Off to finish the kitchen!
Shirley!

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Vina, beautiful flower. I wasn't into daylilies until I started getting them from members here. I do believe I am hooked. LOL I just love them and certainly have the space for them as soon as I make it. :) Right now, most are in my 8x8 gardens and certainly crowding everyone else out.

I am sorry to hear about your buddy, Boogie. I know how hard that is to lose your beloved pets.

It sounds like you get some good help with your critters. It is a good thing to teach kids responsibility with. We have been through many critters as well. Gerbils were several years back and the kids did the small cleanings and then we would do the big one once a week. Then there was the fish. They fed them but I would do the clean out. My youngest daughter had a goldfish name Dude who grew to be about 8 inches long. Boy did she love that little guy. He would come up to the top of the tank for her when she came in the room. One day, we went shopping and when we came home, Dude was not in his tank. The poor guy had jumped out and died. She was crushed. Now she has the parakeet that I take care of.

I was out taking pictures of some of my garden flowers and thought I would let you all see why it is called bee balm.

Well, the weather is slowly changing around! We had rain today, but the humidity is gone, YAY!!!

Worked outside all evening. Not much rain related damage, needed to stake some plants. But my landlords ran some kind of wiring behind my two long beds and in doing so, trampled some of the monarda and Echinacea. I think they nailed the Silene too. Bummer.

How are the chicks doing, Alana?

Beautiful picture, Margo, but did you have to show a red monarda, you know, the bane of my existence? Did you have rain today? How are the new parents to be doing? Everything going okay?

Heidi! I got the garden sign today, wow, that was quick. Love it!

My friend, Kathy, is coming out for a week long visit on Sunday. We've been friends since 1st grade. We have a mini excursion planned, going up on the Thumb to get the rest of the Lake Huron Lighthouses. Want to take her to Frankenmuth too. It will be great to get together with her, with lots of time to visit and catch up!!

Well, off to scrub the mud from underneath my fingernails!
Talk to ya all tomorrow!

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Shirley, things were rough down here during those storms. We don't have mature trees but things went flying off the decks and the wind flattened a lot of my flowers but I am hoping they pop back up. It also knocked over my tomato and jalapeno plants. Grrrrr The owner of the store called during it all and told us to close and head for home. We waited out the worst of it in the back room where there are no windows, just in case. Once it started to let up, we went home. There was a poor little baby robin that had been knocked out of his nest in the parking lot. He was just sitting there not knowing what to do. I hope it is ok.

Kelly will be flying to Ohio for her baby shower this weekend and Alex is staying home to paint the baby room. Too much money to fly him too for just three days. We will be finding out what the gender is. I will share with all of you as soon as I can once I find out. So exciting.

Shirley, that Monarda is more on the side of pink. I do have red that is about 3 1/2 feet tall or more and one that is about 18 inches. Then I have three other colors. I just love them. We will have to make arrangements for sharing some time when you are passing through. Especially if your landlords killed yours.

No more rain in the forecast for the next five days so I am hoping to get caught up on more gardening. This is the garden I still need to clean up and cut back.

Hi, Everyone! Long, goofy day yesterday!

Margo, sounds good to me, will let you know when I'm going to be "passing by, with time to stop!" I'll start looking for plants to share. Could you use some butterfly weed? or Joe Pye?

I can't raise red Monarda, I think I've told that sad story on GW. And my two huge beds of pink and lavender monarda really faded away this year. I can't find the seeds, hate to buy the plants. Will go on looking for the seeds. Wish I could remember where I got THOSE seeds, but it's been 5-6 years ago.

Katie, Alana and Janine, your Yard Sale items are on the way! Katie, you are either going to laugh or cry when you see how I packed those plants!

Beautiful day here, not too hot, with a nice cool breeze AND, tada, NO RAIN!!
I'll be back later with an update!
Shirley!

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Janine,
The strawberry plants came today. I was focused on something else when my daughter told me I got a box in the mail. "Open it. Quick! Give it water." (It had to be a plant.) So she was the one that read your sweet note and came to find me. She's so happy to know someone sent HER a plant. She told me she had bugs eating her strawberries so I got her some Sevin to dust them with. She's busy planting them, watering them and talking to them. I have a new plant addict coming along in the family!
Alana, so glad the flag will work well for you.
I've been to the adjoining town 10 miles away to find some plastic fence. Pieces are 2.5 feet long and 12" high to fence off my flowers/hostas from family members who hack into my poor babies. I bought what was in town thinking, "There are stores in this chain all around. I'll be able to find more if I need more." This may be harder than I thought!
I also dug up daisies out of the parks that are being mowed over. As they reseed the babies grow and the guys mow over anything outside the magic perimeter. I'm planting them and giving them away all over town.
Heidi

What cute pics of the chickies! Alana, cochins have always been some of my favorites. And buff orpingtons. Love their personalities.

Oh, I see that the conversation has deteriorated to talking about poop. I deal with crap all the time at work, and not just with my co-workers. It just comes with the territory of working with animals. Nothing phases me anymore when it comes to poop. But I do wear gloves! In fact, working with wildlife presents it's own unique, poopie challenges when we're out doing field work in the middle of nowhere. Sometimes, just a *bush* is a poopin' luxury. Not to mention when we conduct observations from small blinds for 16 hrs and you have your very own "honey bucket." We stay in the blinds all day so we don't disturb the nesting birds. Now that's dedication!

My yard sale item from Margo showed up yesterday! The water garden book is awesome! We will have to compare notes as we work on these projects, Margo. By the way, I have some papyrus seeds if you want some to put in your pond. No idea what it's cold hardiness is, tho... Margo also sent a funny little bobbing flower that is solar powered. LoL, this will have to sit on the dash of the car.

My yard sale metal botanical plant tags arrived from Janine, too. Wow, these are super indestructible! I know what you mean, Janine, about sunlight fading sharpie marker. I've started using paint pens to write on my tags these days. Seems to last much longer. Pencil works well on the little plastic tags, as well.

Can't wait to see the joepye weed, Shirley! You know how I love those natives :) BTW, I have newly acquired Monarda didyma plants, and my Monarda fistulosa is blooming this year. If you want seed, I'll save you some. I even discovered a volunteer species of Monarda that I have never planted myself, that has popped up in the flowerbeds: M. punctata. Winning!!!

This weekend, I'll be prepping my plants to mail out on Monday. I need to wash off the roots and let them air dry before packing them up. It's been a crazy week at work. Our field station has gained another area of wildlife to work in - - feral hogs 0_o We've now trapped 12 of the little nasties and have them in captivity, ready to start a disease trial on Tuesday. Now *there's* some nasty poop for you!

Katie

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Hi, everyone. What a great yard sale! I just read through all the posts. Nothing but rain here, but that's okay. I am still only going outside now and then and doing lots of sitting and keeping my feet up. After the hospital some more issues came up so I am dealing with all that. It sounds like my surgery won't be before September as slowly as everything is getting scheduled. Likely to be quite awhile before I feel back to my normal self.
Vina, so sorry to read about Boogie. I still miss my 33 year old horse who died early in 2012. My new horse is beautiful, but not like my old friend. So glad the baby chicks were okay. I can't remember who has them. Another day when the typing is taking forever so I'll stop for now.
Laughing about the poop discussion...
Jeanne

Hi Jeanne, great to hear from you! Missed you this month!

Katie, I had forgotten that you work in or with bird poop. And I think you should have stayed with that, because, yes, the hog poop is infinitely worse. They're starting to have a real problem with wild hogs, back in western PA. My son has seen lots of sign (probably poop!),in the past couple of years, but hasn't seen any hogs yet. He had to go to Florida to hunt them, PA doesn't allow it yet.

Janine, Merry is a beautiful cat! Have you read anything about the cat poop/disease thing that's going around? No, seriously, folks, I've read several articles in the past few days.

I should harvest seeds from my Monarda plants, but haven't done so yet. Need to research and find out what the seeds look like. But if I am not successful, then yes, Katie, I'll take some seeds! Oh BTW, the phlox is starting to bloom! I'll post pics when it does.

And Margo, how did your Gaillardia do this year? Out of 5 kinds of seeds that I planted, I've got two kinds left. One died and the squirrels nailed two of them. Tokajer is one that is doing okay. Neither one is very big yet.

William and Kate haven't had the baby yet. Hope it's a girl and hope they name it Elizabeth.

Heidi, I love hearing about the neat gardening stuff you do!

Alana, the tagetes Red Marietta seeds that you sent me are now beautiful little plants with lots of blooms!

Off to bed!
Shirley!

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

I love Buff Orpingtons too. They are so gentle and sweet. I have a hen named Hannah that is getting quite old but she still lays an egg two or three times a week, bless her heart.

Shirley, harvest your Monarda seed heads when they turn completely brown and dry. Hold the seed heads between your thumb and forefinger upside down over a container and roll back and forth to loosen the seeds and they will fall into the container.

Chicks are growing. When they get a little bigger I'll post an updated photo.

I'll be mailing the rest of my yard sale items on Monday.

Thanks, Alana, I'm going to try it this fall. And while I was putzing around outside today, I found my Fuller's Teasel plants, thought they died, but no, there they are, AND some very tiny Lemon Bee Balm plants. Forgot all about these two and they were kind of hidden away, but growing, still in their containers! Need to get them potted up. Pleased about both, but especially the Fuller's Teasel. It is such an elegant plant!

Wanted to share this picture. I've been seeing lots of little blue dragonflies, and then today this fellow came roaring in! He is huge! and quite pretty!

Talk to ya all tomorrow!
Shirley!

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Pretty fellow, Shirley.
I got Janine's envelope of seeds today-already planning for next spring, lol.
Thanks Janine.

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Great picture Shirley.

Today was the shower for my daughter in law. She had to fly in from Texas so it was held earlier in her pregnancy. She is due October 21st. Today was also reveal day and we are going to be grandparents to a little boy. At this time, the name chosen is Braydon Woodruff Smith. I can't wait til this little guy enters this world. What a blessing.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. Today is also my 34th wedding anniversary. We just got back from our anniversary dinner and after such a busy day, I am tired!!!

Tomorrow is gardening day for me and I am looking forward to it. Margo

Happy Anniversary!

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Congratulations Margo! There are several Braydon's in my circle of family and friends, but nary a Woodruff.

Vina and Heidi,
Your plants are ready for the MMan to pick up. I hope they don't melt. The plants I mean. The mailman has AC in the cab of his truck.

Happy Monday.

Gorgeous dragonfly, Shirley! They are some of my favorite insects. I always consider it a real treat when they land on me. They are so fearless!

And, I got your box of joepye weed today. Oh boy, did the postal service have their way with that package. Fortunately, the plant was not really wilted and the roots looked really good. It's all potted up and will enjoy some pampering over the next few weeks to help it adjust to its new surroundings. LoL

Margo, I dropped your box off at the PO today (you should have gotten an email with the DC#). Vina, yours is packed up and will be mailed tomorrow.

Good Grief, Katie! Altho I have to say, I'm glad it's not any worse! I'm also glad the plants weren't damaged. When I went to pack them up, I took the clump out of the milk jug, and it fit right in the box. Never thinking about soil compaction, I wrapped it all up, as it was and shipped it out. Should have shaken the soil off. Sure hope they work out for you!

Been doing a little research on dragonflies and I think that one is a Blue Dasher! And the little blue ones might be damsel flies. Oh great, something else to chase around the gardens!

Alana, if your weather is as hot as ours, the Mman will need that AC! It was 93 here today!

My friend Kathy is here for a week. We've been talking non stop for two days now! Good times!

I'll be back on tomorrow with an update,
Shirley!

Nice cake, Vina! I especially love the twizzler octopus. BTW, your box went out today. The USPS website should have sent you an email notification with the DC #.

Shirley, here's a little native fly getting nectar from the NE Aster you sent to me last year. It's quickly becoming one of my favorite flowers!

Looks great, Katie! Mine are about 5 foot tall, no blooms yet, and some got a little bent over in the severe T-storm we had today. I have Common Sneezeweed planted right in front of them and they are just about as tall. I love, love, love the dark lavender color of the NEs!

Margo, did you get rain today?

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

For those of you who are prayer warriors, I have a job interview tomorrow. It's for a part-time position as a chaplain at a beef rendering plant. I passed the first interview today and they called back after 3 hours and apologized and asked if I could come back tomorrow (Wed) at 10 a.m.. I'm so excited. This is right up my alley...encouraging people and doing ministry. It's a rather non-traditional location, but hey. Lots of muslims, a few Buddhists and a few agnostics. English, Spanish and Arabic (Somalia, Sudan, East Africa). Very diverse work place.
Thank you.
Heidi

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Good luck Heidi.

Vina, cute cake and I bet Billy loved it.

Shirley, no rain for us. We were up visiting my mother today and saw the storm that passed through the Monroe area on our way home. We missed it though. I am back to watering and since it is so hot, twice a day.

Katie, most probably the box will arrive tomorrow or Thursday. This was a great swap and want to thank Shirley again for hosting.

Margo, that storm came up very suddenly and really poured, but did nothing to the humidity. Still very hot and muggy here.

Hey, have a great day!

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Afternoon!

Alana and Katie, the Strutters Ball and Jazz Echo arrived! The daylily is soaking and they are both going in the ground this evening. 95 here today! They both arrived in super condition! THANKS SO MUCH!!

Mine will be going out on Monday. Shirley, didn't know about your 'bad' luck with red bee balm, but I have some Jacob Kline you could give a try?

I also have a red clump that was red last year and this year its WHITE! Can anyone tell me why bee balm would change color? This is very weird! It's not a new clump that grew over an older clump. I've never had white bee balm anywhere in the yard...this year big clump...not that I'm complaining :) it looks really great where it is in with my Alaska Daisies. Hope it stays.

Billy did like his cake. He's been on a fish kick lately and got all new fish for his fish tank for his birthday :) He was so excited.

Went hiking with the kids down by Ithaca. Went to Taughannock Falls. It was huge! Had a great time!

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Alana, the bee balm arrived today. It arrived in great shape. It's a bit cooler this week and today we have a breeze. It's only reaching the low 90s today. I'll plant it tonight. I'll love it whatever color it is. I don't have pink OR white so now I'll have one. Maybe it will be one of those magic bee balms like the previous post--changing colors according to it's mood. Maybe there's a bee balm fairy that has to sprinkle color on it at night while we're sleeping. ha
What a fun swap this has been.

Shirley, GREAT bird pic! You have yourself a barn swallow. You can tell by the long forked tail. Also, cliff swallows have a pale colored "collar" around their neck. Love the Verbena hastata pic, too!

This has been an awesome swap! I hope it becomes an annual tradition. Semi-annual would be fine with me, too!

Happy Tuesday!!

I have finally mailed out my boxes yesterday afternoon, phew! Sorry Shirley and Heidi it took me so long. I hope you enjoy :)

Heidi's DC# 9505 5102 6277 3203 5255 82 It's suppose to arrive on Thursday.

Shirley's DC# 9505 5102 6277 3203 5252 54 Shirley, it should be there on Wednesday.

This has been an awesome swap. And if we can vote I'd like it to be annual/ semi-annual too :)

Love the Butterfly Picture!!

Have a great day!

ps. Took Taylor to a 4H show this last weekend. Guess who wants to join 4H? Anyone had any experience with it? I've heard nothing but terrific things :)

RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

I have some of that verbena hastate and didn't know what it was. Thanks!
Anyone else have really tall flowers this year? The daylilies around here have been very tall and the stems can't hold the flowers up when they bloom. My branching sunflowers are already 10' high. I can't imagine how tall they will get.

Heidi, my New England Asters are right around 5' tall. The hastate is 3-5'. It does seem like everything was taller this year.
Haven't had a Buckeye yet. Haven't had too many varities of any butterfly yet. Not sure what the problem is. But I usually get more in late July, August and September.
No need to apologize, Vina, we had until the end of the month. You are in no way late!
Thanks for the info, Katie, I couldn't tell what it was.

Well, Everyone, I think this swap is officially over!

I got Vina's package today, and my "yard sale" Iris's, the Partridge Pea and a bonus daylily all arrived in great condition. I have places for all but the daylily, might pass that on to a friend who loves them. Vina, Thank You! I can hardly wait to see the Iris's bloom!

Jeanne is doing the August swap and I know she will have a great idea for it. She'll probably be on in a few days to let us know what's happening!

And I want to thank everyone who joined in this month, you made it fun, and yes, we should think about repeating the Yard Sale again, next summer!

Talk to ya all soon!
Shirley!

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

Shirley, this was a great idea and it seems that everyone had fun. I too vote for doing it every year.

I did notice so many of my flowers were taller this year. My red bee balm was over three feet and then the wind knocked it all down. I need to get out there and clear out around it and set it up straight. Things are so busy around here that I am not getting much done outside. Doesn't take long for it to look a mess.

On a better note, I just finished my first cucumber of the year and it was delicious. This was only my second year of success with them and last year, I only got one. I am full this year so can't wait to try my hand at refrigerator pickles. My tomatoes are full as are my jalapeno and tomatillo. Gonna make some great salsa this year.

Thanks Shirley for another great hosting job. Margo

 o
RE: FOTESS July Yard Sale!

The Sky Hooks iris came today! Thank you so much. It rained, then quit. I put my clothes on the line so of course it's been dripping ever since! The iris came in great shape. Thank you! What fun this has been.

Could have looked at the list. DUH!!

In any event, the Yard Sale is REALLY over now!!

Margo, sounds so good! I wish I could grow veggies.

The heat, rain, heat cycle of July really did a number on my gardens. Butterfly gardens aren't supposed to be really super neat looking, but this is ridiculous (never could spell that word!). I've got the weekend planned to finish "R&R".

Heidi, did you get a clear shot of the Buckeye yet?

Talk to ya all later!
