hello

This will be a straight swap for all the seeds you just can't use.

sign ups will go till june 30, I would like seeds in by july 20th, or at least in the mail by then.

if you want to make sure you don't get back any seeds you sent please send a list of what seeds you are sending or mark each pack with your GW name.

if you have any questions please post them here.

thank you

ok, just wanted to know where the donated seed was going - helps me select the seeds to donate knowing if they're going to someone with very little vs. someone looking for something a little more particular.

boy, this should be fun! can't hardly wait

I would like to join, if it's still open. I have leftover veggie seeds that are commercial. This is my first year in a very long time so I'm getting my seeds built up, I'm open to anything that will grow in Z9 that is not toxic.

I am mailing my seeds to you tomorrow, Michelle. And I am advocating sending the hostess a gift. I have my trade list updated. Please send me only flowers. If you don't get seed that is on my wishlist then surprise me. I have shady and sunny beds, just no vines, no datura, and no wildflowers. Thank you for hosting this swap, it is my first Round Robin.

    Best to you,
    Quiltingfox

    Hello,

    I would love to join!
I can send veggies, herbs & flowers.
Would like to receive flowers and herbs only in return.
And I think I already have a gift set aside for the hostess :)

    Thanks

I would like to join! I have a wide variety of seeds to share. I even have a few hot/dry climate seeds for whoever requested those. :)

I would appreciate anything annual and non-toxic. Even real common nontoxic things like zinnias and radishes. :) Especially if it's a blue, pink or purple flowering plant!

There are small kids and a dog here, so toxic things like lantana, datura, brugmansia and larkspur are no good for me.

My family moves very often due to my husband's line of work. We usually are limited to patio gardening with very small spaces. Anything that takes more than 6 months to bloom/yield fruit, or that gets too big for a 3 gallon pot (especially trees, shrubs and most vines), won't belong in my garden.

Since my needs are pretty specific, I won't mind getting back less seeds than I sent in.

Hi Michelle, wow, lucky you to see all those butterflies! That's one of the things I miss most from rural TX- all the butterflies.

They seem to be very uncommon in the city where I live now. Even people who grow plenty of butterfly attractors don't get many visits- Probably because of all the pesticides that the rest of the urban dwellers are using.:(

May I please clarify that in addition to nontoxic I also prefer *annuals.* :)

Perennials almost always get way too big for my garden. Also, my family must move very often, so things that don't mature within one year are out. We'd move before we could enjoy the plant!

I also want to post this list, for reference, of plants that are good for hot and dry conditions. That way we'll have an easier time finding seeds to send to 9.Frances. (And Frances will know how to grow these if/when she gets them!)

I used to live on the edge of a very hot, dry West TX desert, Zone 8. All the following worked well for me, and survived numerous droughts. I did mulch a LOT, and watered just enough to keep things alive.

One trick to living in a climate like that is planting reseeding flowers in Fall so that they have already bloomed and set seed by the heat/drought of Summer. Then the seeds that are dropped will re-sprout when the cooler, wetter Fall conditions arrive. :)

These plants also worked for a garden pal of mine who lived in a hot, dry region of the Australian outback!

Please note that while these all handle heat and drought well, there are nearly no ornamental plants that can do entirely without watering in the hottest, driest part of Summer-- except perhaps for cactus! :)

Plants for hot & dry climate:

    Foliage:
Allium, ornamental types including Chives- May need part shade and/or mulch.
Elderberry, any- especially'Sutherland Gold.' Needs shade. May die back to roots during drought, but will usually recover if kept well mulched.
Chrysanthemum coronarium (shungiku)-Part shade. This is also edible.
    Rosemary
    Sage, culinary
    Thyme
    Ajuga, Bugleweed (likes shade)
    Liriope (needs shade)
    Dusty miller (prefers part shade)
Spanish lavender- partial shade. (Nearly all other lavenders lack sufficient heat tolerance)
    Artemisias
Sedums (some of these have nice flowers too).
Cenizo (Leucophyllum frutescens) Texas silver sagebrush; this one also has nice lavender flowers.
Ice Plant (this also has flowers)
Fennel, bronze leafed or green leafed (also attracts butterflies)
Yarrow (this one also has nice flowers and feeds butterflies. Grow like Echinacea)
Portulaca (Moss Rose) also has nice flowers. Plant on last date of frost.
Trumpet Vine- may be used as groundcover
Confederate Jasmine and Vinca minor- good groundcovers or climbers, also have flowers that bloom repeatedly. Fall/Winter sow, or try rooting some cuttings.
Melampodium "butter daisy" - ground cover for shade. Fall planting.
Wandering Jew "Purple Heart"- from cuttings only, but this purple plant is well worth it in hot/dry times!

Flowers (Some of these may need shade):
Aster- Fall planting, needs part shade
    Agastache- Treat like Echinacea below.
    Brugmansia- Partial shade only.
    Calendula- Needs partial shade.
Campanula pyramidalis- Grow like Wisteria, below.
    Coreopsis- Grow like Echinacea.
Chrysanthemum- Except for Chrysanthemum coronarium, start from cuttings. Then grow in part shade.
Echinacea- Fall sow in part shade in 6" pots, then transplant to full sun in Spring.
    Gaillardia- Fall planting.
Mexican hat (ratibida) - Fall planting.
Geranium- Treat like Echinacea, or grow from cuttings.
Rose campion- Fall planting, part shade.
Evening Primrose: pink, white or yellow.
Daylily, daffodil, spider lily, Peruvian daffodil, "naked ladies" lily, oxblood lily, amaryllis, and Bearded Iris (all need partial shade and to be well mulched.)
    Datura- Fall planting
    California Poppy - Fall planting
    Creeping Phlox
    Petunia
    Poppy- Fall planting, partial shade
Clematis, in part shade. Fall planting. "sweet autumn" is best since it needs less water than large flowered ones.
    Cosmos -Fall planting
    Coriander (Cilantro) - Fall planting
    Honeysuckle- Fall planting
    Lantana- Grow like Echinacea.
Lupine, especially TX Bluebonnet- Fall planting
    Marigold
    Morning Glory
    Moonflower
    Zinnia
    Blackfoot Daisy
    Liatris - Fall planting
    Hollyhock - Fall planting
    Lavatera- Fall planting
    Dinnerplate Hardy Hibiscus- Fall planting
    Texas Star Hibiscus- Fall planting
Sedum, Autumn Joy or Dragons Blood
    Salvias- Grow as for Echinacea.
    Stoke's Aster- Fall planting.
    Statice- Fall planting
Sunflowers, especially natives like H. maximiliani
    Foxglove- Partial shade only.
Mexican petunia (ruellia)- Fall or Spring planting
    Snow-In-Summer
    Mexican bird of paradise (Caesalpinia)
Wisteria- Grow like Echinacea, then plant in partial shade and keep well mulched.
    Weigela- same as Wisteria.
and, of course: Flowering Cactus! :)

Hope this helps anyone who is struggling with heat and drought!

I already grow many of those plants! I am going to copy your list and try planting some more in fall. I have tried the wintersowing this past fall with mixed results. I think the mild winter was not beneficial! Fall sowing is more my style and a practivce I am used to!

You're all quite welcome for the hot/dry plants info! :)

More hot/dry tolerant ornamental plants I just discovered today while talking to my Mom who is still living in hot/dry Texas:

    Foliage--
Powderpuff, Sensitive Plant-Mimosa strigillosa. Lacy leaves fold closed if touched. Also has pink powderpuff flowers. This is a small creeper, and kids love it! :)
Desert poppy, Eschscholzia glyptosperma. Silvery lacy foliage and pretty orange flowers.
Purple fountain grass, Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum'
Pigeon Berry, Rivina humilis. Shade groundcover with berries for birds.
Littleleaf Sumac Rhus microphylla. Fall color, and berries for birds.
Mescal Bean- Sophora secundiflora. Glossy evergreen foliage, makes a nice hedge. Also has fragrant flowers!
Ornamental Sweet Potato Ipomoea batatas: Comes in dark purple and golden-green! )
Red-leaf hibiscus, Hibiscus acetosella. Also has nice flowers
    Creeping Juniper, Juniperus horizontalis
Mexican Creeping Zinnia 'Aztec Gold'-Sanvitalia speciosa
Peacock Flower,Dietes bicolor- also has nice flowers

    Flowers--
Prickly Poppy, Argemone sanguinea, A.grandiflora, A.aurantiaca, A. mexicana, and more Argemones. Lovely but it is VERY thorny!
    Shirley Poppy, Papaver rhoeas
    Wine Cups, Buffalo Rose-Callirhoe involucrata
    Scarlet Indian Paintbrush, Castilleja coccinea
    Purple prairie clover, Dalea purpurea
Italian Clover, Crimson Clover-Trifolium incarnatum. Butterfly plant.
Groundplum Milkvetch, Astragalus crassicarpus. Gorgeous and has edible pods. The root has use as a medicinal herb!
Smallflowered Milkvetch, Astragalus nuttallianus. Best used in rock gardens, hanging basket or windowbox.
Gaura, any. Especially 'Karalee Petite Pink'
Malpighia glabra, acerola- Tasty, edible fruits too. Best grown in a pot, not frost hardy!
    Calibrachoa
    Gerbera daisy, gerbera jamesonii
    Spider Flower, Cleome hassleriana
Coral vine, Antigonon leptopus- Butterfly attractor
    Flowering maple- Abutilon pictum
    Trailing abutilon-Abutilon megapotanicum
Lions Ear/ Lions Tail (Leonotis)- Bright orange butterfly attractor, dies after setting seed. But it reseeds freely, and has attractive seedpods that remain on the plant!
    Blue hibiscus, Alyogyne huegelii
    Clitoria ternatea, butterfly pea
    Lablab purpureus, hyacinth bean
    Nolana paradoxa 'Blue Bird'

    Shrubs/small flowering trees:
Redbud, Cercis canadensis (can be grown as bonsai, or tree)
Orchid tree, Bauhinia (can be grown as bonsai or tree)
    Desert catalpa, Chilopsis linearis
Yellow bells, Tecoma stans (does well in a container)
    rose of sharon, hibiscus syriacus
palo verde, retama- very drought resistant but is thorny.
Texas Huisache, Sweet Acacia-Acacia smallii: VERY fragrant, feeds butterflies and bees.
Texas Persimmon-Diospyros texana: Edible black fruits that are ornamental.

Zone 11 is indeed tropical. So I can grow things year-round and don't have to worry about frost, which is truly awesome. :)

But we do have plenty of other issues causing plants to sicken or die:
Torrential rains/flooding in winter, seasonal drought in summer, oodles of tropical fungi and soil diseases, nematodes, and tropical pest insects.

It would indeed be gardening paradise here, if not for being so crowded, extremely expensive and urbanized.

Few of us indeed can afford to live here for very long due to the high cost of living. I will almost certainly have to move back to a cheaper part of the USA in April 2009.

The extremely high cost of land here also means most dwellings have no yards. Most locals, myself included, have to garden in 10x10 or smaller, paved spaces like patios and balconies. The space limitations and upcoming move are why I have no use whatsoever for perennials.

Many less lucky folks than myself have landlords who do not allow any planting at all. :(

I am truly grateful to have a space of my own to grow in, even if it's just 10x10.

    Grovespirit,
10x10! EEEK! And I was sad going from 4 acres to just 1/2 acre! But I bet the tropical atmosphere makes it worth it!
    And I'm guessing Hawaii?

    Thanks for the 2nd list!

    Michelle,
Thanks for reminding us we have till July 20th! I was getting so excited I forgot we still had that much time!

I think I have now sent my address to everyone singed-up, please let me know if you did not get it.
I will work on printing more lists today, it is sposed to rain most of the day, like we need more water this year. the miss. river is pridicted to crest next wed at just over 30 feet our flood level is 17 feet but it will not get as high as 1993(I didn't live here then) when it crested at 32.1 feet but it could still go up from there. luckily our town in mostly built on a 300foot bluff, so unless it is a biblical sized flood we will be fine.
my thoughts are with those in the lower areas of minnisota and iowa, I rilly hope you dry out soon

    I'll check in tonight

Are we supposed to post our wants lists here or are you getting them from our member pages?

  • booberry85

    last modified: 9 years ago

Evonne, I included a general list of wants with my seeds. I see that you already sent yours in. It might be nice for Michelle to post general wants.

For example, in my note, I said that I like tomatoes, peppers, squashes, beans and cucumbers and that I don't discriminate against hybrids, heirlooms, color, size, hot sweet, summer, winter, bush or pole. There all good to me. I also like easy flowers to grow such as zinnias, marigolds, cosmos, etc. I also requested no root veggies, no grasses and no vines. There was a little more to it, but thats the gist of it.

I think it might be easier for Michelle to give her an idea but keep it a little vague since the swap is based on what other people send in.

Sorry! I did not send the list with my seeds.

I am looking for primarily flowers!

Woodland plants. I am doing some woodland gardening. Any plant seeds for this would be great! I am open to suggestions for seeds.

    Amaranthus, Joseph's Coat
    Balloon Flower
    Bleeding Heart, White
    Bloodroot
    Blue-Eyed Grass
Campanula: Peach-Leaved Bellflower, Elizibeth Oliver. Any variety besides Canterbury bells...

Carnation: I am going to try growing some of my own this year after the first load of flowers is out of the greenhouse. I have Chabaud Giant mixed colors and a regular Chaubaud mix. I would enjoy trying others for variety!

    Cerinthe Kiwi Blue
Columbine, any special colors or varieties.
Coreopsis (Something that is hardy in my zone 5-6)

Cosmos, Picotee (Any Picotee! I can't get too many of these since no one sells them in my area.)

    Delphinium, Black Knight
    Dianthus any Carnation-like variety
    Dianthus, blue!
Heather, anything hardy in zone 5.
    Hellebores, any variety!

The last time I participated in a swap like this, I got flowers I did not even think about. I was pretty happy about that! There should be an element of serindipity about what you might get, even if you never heard of it before! :-D

    hello
sorry to be MIA over the weekend we were having a yard sale and things were a mess.

    well on to the questions
I'm getting you wants lists from your member pages, or if you post one, or if you send one with your seeds I'm just using them to see the kind or seeds you like, you will get surprises too.

gnomey - welcome you will be #36.

if you can send a list of what you are sending with your seeds it will make it easyer to be sure you don't get the same kind of seeds back, if I have time I will make a list of what you sent.

I got my seeds all divied out last night, I ended up with 80 packets, but if I have something in my stash I see someone wants I may split them with you, so if you get a small amount in a bonus pack I hope that is all right.

I may not be checking every day this week, Quincy is gearing up for the highest flood levels in recorded history(or at least that is what the media says) I may go down and valentier for some work, but it will have to be light work becoues I have a very bad back. but don't worry if you don't hear from me for a day or so.

Michelle - don't underestimate these floodwaters! My family lives in northern Iowa and things were wiped out that had survived anything mother nature had thrown at it before. I'm not sure which river is north of you, but if you want to email me directly I might be able to tell you what it did upstream.

Michelle, are you above water? I just read that some levees didn't hold and that Quincy is flooding. Stay safe.

    hello everyone
I know quincy has been on the news latly, but our town is fine. there are farms and river camps in the lower bottom lands that are flooded, but quincy and hannibal and many of the other towns in the area are up in hilly areas and in the case of quincy we are on a 300 foot bluff. with the river predicted to crest at 32 feet we will be ok.
I rilly feel for the people in the lower lands, and the farmers. the water could stay for weeks or months.
I was not here for the flood of 93 but they said the water stayed high for 3 months.
I'm hopeing my milkweed plants do well becouse the areas I used to go get milkweed for the caterpillars I raised is now totaly flooded

    well I'm off
    see ya all later
