| Good morning Alana and Shirley! So glad you could join :0) I was wondering if it would be easier to list our top 5 iris' that we are looking for here. That way if someone just happens to have one of those that would be awesome! And then list the 5 iris you know will be in your box. If there are extras that can always be a fun surprise. But listing 5 would be great. Then you can pick what box you would like to have sent to you. I guess we could "steal" 2 times to give everyone a fair shake at a super box. And then it would be locked with the last person to steal it. Would that be better than drawing names out of a hat? Let me know what you think. We FINALLY got some rain yesterday. The frogs in the pond couldn't be happier, or could my water lilies. It has been very dry and HOT this summer. Crazy for Upstate NY weather. I know I can't compete with you southern ladies for heat...but holy moly!! SO GLAD IT FINALLY RAINED!! :) I'll check back in later...and hopefully we'll have some more sign ups. Have a super day! |

| Vina, Will this be just bearded Iris? Or will we include others like sibericus, louisianica, cristata, etc, ? Alana |
- Posted by flowergirl34 5 Upstate NY (My Page) on Wed, Jul 27, 11 at 16:15
| Hey all! Alana, I think it would be okay for any kind of iris. As long as its named. :) I know I love tall bearded, but I also have miniatures, border-bearded, siberians and louisiana's. I had a cristata...notice I use the word 'had'...it didn't end well. That's why I think we should list what we have (5) and top 5 of what we're looking for. It is beautiful today! A nice breeze and mid-80's, just lovely. Friday its suppose to be high 90's again. I'm just trying to soak up every minute of today :) Have a super afternoon! |

| How exciting! This is the first time I have been at the right place at the right time with time on my hands. I did know that about Oktoberfest, my hand just did'nt cooperate, lol. Too cool! Alana |
| Congrats Alana! Vina, just wanted to say Thanks for having me! :) You have my name mixed up though, it is Karen. Just so there is no confusion! I had some time on my hands and thought I would put pics of my Irises up. I hope they aren't too big, it's been awhile since I've done this. The first 5 are the ones I'm offering in this swap, and the rest are just to look at. Timescape Some others just to look at: Ancient Echoes and Sky Search can be divided, but the others are first yr. bloomers, and do not have big enough divisions. |

| Beautiful pictures Karen! You make me wish it was April again already! |
| Hi, lurker here! Karen, those Iris are beautiful! Vina sent me some in a previous swap-I was never much interested in them, but wanted to make a memorial garden for my mom, whose favorite flower was the Iris! Now, like PDF, I can hardly wait for April! Just hope I can get them planted right so they grow, I knew next to nothing about Iris's, but I'm doing the research! Thanks for sharing! Shirley! |

| Good Saturday Morning everyone! Karen I am so sorry! Lord only knows how many people say my name wrong, I am so sorry! I corrected it :) Your pictures are absolutely gorgeous! UPDATED LISTS: BOX 1 Vina / flowergirl34 And here are 5 iris that I'm looking for: 1.Tall Bearded: Big Red BOX 2 Shirley/ brittneysgran And here are 5 iris that I'm looking for: 1.Tall Bearded: Black Suited BOX 3 Karen/kalena67 Iris I would love to receive: BOX #4 Alana/poisondartfrog I will be delighted with any, but these represent my tastes pretty well: Still taking sign-ups :) Have a great day everybody! |
| Vina, it is not a problem at all! :) Glad everyone enjoyed the pics! I have 'Immortality' reblooming right now, and it smells sooo good! What a nice treat! My Iris here normally bloom the end of May. It is a long wait!! lol The 'Dapple Pony' (or is it 'dappled') I received in a swap from gw member raggedyann (Annie) It is a looker! This was its first bloom for me. I love it! Thanks again Annie! Shirley, do join the swap if you can!! Have a great day everyone! |
| Still Lurking! Vina, Karen, I think I'll wait to join an Iris swap when I have actually grown an Iris! There is so much I don't know; wish I would have paid more attention when Mum grew them; I didn't even know they had a scent-some plants don't. We are getting some rain here, we needed it, but not as bad as some other places. I dodged the raindrops all day, laying down cardboard in some of my flower beds. I am SO sick of weeding, and I'm having a grass invasion in my middle bed! I know the cardboard looks like crap, but I don't care, I'm going to cover it with mulch in the fall. On the other hand, I no longer have cardboard boxes sitting everywhere! Have a great evening everyone! Shirley! |
- Posted by poisondartfrog 7a (My Page) on Sun, Aug 7, 11 at 7:10
| Shirley, I've been doing the same thing with cardboard. I was busy this summer and the heat and rain and my absence created a nightmare in 2 of my beds. I'm trying to smother the grass now so that I can rework those beds in fall. Ugly, but necessary. |

| I think I can find five of mine that still have names on them. Forgot to label them this year when they bloomed. Will list them hopefully later today or Monday. Suzanne |
| Vina! My Partridge Pea is blooming! I will email ya a pic! (forget Photobucket!) It's a really pretty flower-kind of like a lady slipper, only fat. And yellow. Alana-I used cardboard out front around my new raised bed, very effectively killed the grass and weeds. I removed it-it got kind of crappy looking and was blowing all over the place-about a month ago, and there still isn't anything growing around that bed! I'm not sure where I got the idea from, but it works! Found some more boxes in the shed-off to do another bed! Your friendly neighborhood lurker- Shirley! |

| Good morning everybody! Shirley, I got your pics! They are beautiful! I really like the partridge pea and the catepillar (is that a monarch butterfly catepillar?) Very cute! Alana, I have not mailed out your Quaker Lady yet. We have been having crazy thunderstorms since Sunday. Yesterday we got 5 inches of rain alone...with hail. On the good side, my pond is full to the bottom of the waterfall and the frogs, fish and turtles are thrilled! :) Suzanne, so glad you could join us! :) I was thinking about my listing the Louisiana Black Gamecock Iris. If you don't have a wet area or a pond to put it it could be a problem. So, I have decided to interchange that one. You can get the LBG OR a TB of my choosing. So whoever picks my box, just let me know which one you would like. Just want to everyone to be happy with their boxes :) UPDATED LISTS: BOX 1 Vina / flowergirl34 And here are 5 iris that I'm looking for: 1.Tall Bearded: Big Red BOX 2 Shirley/ brittneysgran And here are 5 iris that I'm looking for: 1.Tall Bearded: Black Suited BOX 3 Karen/kalena67 Iris I would love to receive: BOX #4 Alana/poisondartfrog I will be delighted with any, but these represent my tastes pretty well: Iris that I'm looking for: I'll still be taking sign-ups till the end of the day. | Hi everyone! Been so busy the last few days, sometimes I wonder where the time goes??? It seems like I wake up and before I know it...time for bed? Alana, I mailed out your Quaker Lady on Tuesday. Hopefully, you'll be getting it today :) And my box is coming to me WOOHOO! :) Karen, I hope your hubby feels better soon. That sounds like an awful fall. Shirley, I'll mail your box tomorrow too. I have a bunch of iris to dig today, what's a few more, lol! :) Mice, they are so cute! My mom has the same fear. When I was little I saw her jump on a table once. Funniest thing ever! I have been moving some of my beds around, splitting things, and just trying to get garden "organized". I think it is a futile attempt, but I must attempt none the less. I like having a place for everything and everything in its place...mother nature never agrees with me :) She's very willy nilly. I rarely disagree with her, I let the milkweeds grow where ever they find a place...I love monarch butterfly caterpillars. Sunflowers poke up EVERYWHERE...I feed the birds all winter...so I have a lot of sunflowers surprises come spring. I let them grow. Oxeye daisies are a weakness of mine, I just don't have the heart to rip them out. So they all re-seed and find homes where they can. But I must draw the line at Butterfly bushes. I must have 10 of them. 5 are Twilight...one of the most re-seeding butterfly bushes EVER! They grow anywhere they get a chance. I have so many baby butterfly bushes its crazy. I feel bad for ripping them out for the compost bin...but what else do you do with them? I even offered them on the gw exchange. ???Oh well. Have a super Thursday!
| Thank you for the well wishes for my hubby. :) Shirley, I received your email, and sent you one back. I'm still planning on digging your Irises this week end and mailing them on Monday. Vina, weather permitting, I also plan on doing a lot of thinning, moving, and removing flowers in my two beds this week end. Some things have really taken over! It is going to be a chore, that is for sure! I hope everyone is having a great day! |

| Alana & Vina - Glad your irises arrived. New irises for us next year. Yeah Vina - I received your iris box as well. Goodness I have never seen such big iris rhizomes. What kind of soil do you have? I have been adding river sand to my beds and it helps some. Red clay is not the best for irises I know. I have been tempted to bring some dirt, from the Church I attend, home. The irises I planted there are close to the size of yours. I just told a friend of mine the irises love that soil. Karen - I received your e-mail and whenever you can ship is fine with me. We have some cooler weather this week and it feels wonderful. Fall is not that far off. Shirley |

| Hi everyone! Happy Friday!!! Shirley, so glad they made it :)...and the secret in the soil is...ready...wait for it...wait for it...cow pooh! Yup, cow pooh that is at least 3 years old, so it won't burn the roots. I actually mix it with mulch and dirt, like a dirt smoothie. Works fantastic! and...since its old NO SMELL! There is a mulch store around here that actually sells something very similar to what I have been using for years. I've tried it and that stuff works great too. And best of all, I don't have to do any of the mixing. :) I also split my iris' about every year (or every other). I have a bunch of them so the foliage is a big part of my gardens once they are done flowering. And the nicer it stays the better my beds look. :) Suzanne, your box actually went out yesterday. And I totally forgot, until I got home, that I was suppose to put a del. confirmation on it. I am so sorry! that I forgot. The hostess probably shouldn't be forgetting her own rules, lol! :) Hopefully, you'll be getting them Saturday. Hope you having fun camping. Karen, if you having as much of a crazy time as I am I feel for you! I have decided with to completely dig out my entire back of the house flowerbed and re-plant everything. This be is 15 feet wide and 46 feet long...I think I have officially lost my mind! But, things are poking and starting all over the place and I need more organization than the craziness that has taken over. Besides, I got a new glider for my birthday from my MIL and it needs a nice new home :) DH and the kiddos got me a stone bench for the pond and a new bird bath, which is over in my new daylily bed around the pool. :) I also realized that I need to update the pics on my GW page. They are over 2 years old. My BIL put them on there for me, there is no way I could ever figure that out. Maybe I can sweet talk him with some lasagna and garlic bread to give me an update on my page :) Have a super day everyone! |

| Hi Everyone! Shirley, your box went out this afternoon. I have a DC#, but not with me at the moment, will post it tomorrow. :0) Vina, I have 2 round beds, about 15 ft across each. Not the biggest beds, but I let things get away from me (agastache, rudbeckias, etc.) and ended up getting rid of it to start over. I've only got one bed started. Will till it on Sunday, and move a few things around. I dug all of my Irises today, cleaned them, and divided the rhizomes, trimmed the foliage. Will re-plant them Sunday. I also want to get a good start in the other bed (cleaning it out & tilling it) and my daylilys will go into that bed. I'm also keeping plants like sedums, some penstemon, my lilies, and a few other things. It is work, that is for sure, but it will be worth it in the next couple of years! Your bed is huge!! A lot of work! I'll have to look at your pics again before you change them! Have a good day all! |
