NEW: Incredible Heirlooms Summer Spice Round Robin

sunnyk

Hey All,

This month's Incredible Heirloom's Swap is Summer Spice!! Why don't we all add a little spice and excitement to our lives and a little flavor to our dishes!

The idea behind this swap is to enjoy some heat, spice, or flavor explosions.

We will be swapping any kind of hot or sweet peppers, onions, herbs, edible flowers or anything that adds flavor or heat to your favorite dishes...

Please give your partner the equivilant of 5-6 full pack of seeds. More can be sent, if you and your partner agree to send more. And it is always ok to sample some of the seeds out of a freshly bought packet yourself, just make sure you send your partner enough seeds to get a good crop. And feel free to add a spicy favorite recipe if you would like.

Sign Ups will be until July 20th. Then on the 21st I will post Partners!

Please make sure to send out your seeds by August 14th . That should give us all plenty of time to contact our partners, and gather seeds together, or to place a seed order .

If you have any questions, dont hesitate to ask :)

I am totally stoked about being back and swapping again...spice is very nice!

...it has been a rough few months but things are looking bright again(knock wood) and I have missed you guys....it feels good to be back :)

Donna :)

Christy, I'm not necessarily thinking of spicy food, but the things that add lots of flavor lots punch to your food. Yeah, hot peppers are a big one (No I haven't lots my mind. I still love hot peppers). However, I'm also thinking:
    cilantro
    basil
    oregano
    marjoram
    cumin
    onions
    leeks
    chives
    scallions
    Lemon grass /lemon balm
    mint
    ginger
    horseradish
    radish
    arugula
    watercress
    nasturtiums
    tarragon

It's anything that can pack a punch of flavor.

C'mon folks, no need to be shy....and no need to fear the chile peppers. Summer Spice can be anything that adds flavor, so no need to swap the hot stuff if you dont use them :)

    Inquiring minds want to know!
Are you a hot pepper person? And if so, how much heat can you stand?

As for me, I'm a hot pepper person! The highest heat I can stand are Habaneros. I grew Naga Jolokias last year and they were too much for me! This year I'm trying to grow Chocolate Habs, White Habs, Caribbean Red, & Jamaica Reds as my hottest peppers. Despite this, I am not a heat freak. I like there to be good flavor behind the pepper!

Oh my, I have been a bad girl...not checking in to GW enough. I am in on this one!! LOVE...LOVE hot peppers...the more heat, the better...Love herbs...Love flavor and spice in my food!!!!!!!

    Thanks for hosting....

I like hot peppers....but I am not up to the Habeneros yet...LOL!! I like Cayennes and Lemon Drops and this one Spanish type that I am not sure what it really is. My son on the other hand is training himself to be a chili head. He now puts hot sauce on about everything he eats.So I am growing some White Habs for him this season...and will maybe do some Nagas for him along with some Orange Habs and Chile de Arbol next season.

  • highalttransplant

Okay, I'm the wimp in the group! Even a Jalapeno seems hot to me, but don't get the impression that I don't like peppers. I'm growing 14 different kinds of peppers, and harvested my first two today - a Revolution bell, and a Healthy sweet pepper. I am growing a couple of mildy hot peppers to use for making homemade salsa - Pizza, and Senorita. Last year, I used Fooled You Jalapenos for the salsa, and I decided I needed a little more kick than that.

Okay, I'm probably a total gardening nerd for taking a picture of them, but it helps me keep track of harvest dates.

I love peppers also. I am growing 18 different kinds this year. Growing Tepin, Red Habanero, Aji Yellow, Fresno, Maui Purple and Jalapeno for my hots.

Oh Bonnie...that plate of veggies is gorgeous!!
I love big luscious Sweet Bell type peppers, but I cant grow them because of the Pepper Maggots. I am going to try growing peppers that they dont like for the next few years and hope the flies that they are from forget about my yard LOL!

I am adding on Canyonwind...I would have done it yesterday, but for some reason I didnt see her post ...what's wrong with me lately ,must be the fresh cherry tomatoes messing with my head LOL!

So...with the addition of Annie, we now have an even number again and sign-ups are CLOSED :-)

I will post partners later tonight or tomorrow.

    Thanks ALL

Only that it is a drying bean...I guess that means you eat it when it is in the bean stage like for baked beans or soup, and not as a snap bean. :)

Patti, that was a great box! Annie's an awesome swap partner!

Well, I received my box from Christy today, and I'm almost afraid to list all of the wonderful goodies, because you all will be green with envy ... BUT, here's the list anyway, LOL! Read 'em and weep!

Chili flavored dark chocolate bar (just enough heat to keep me from eating the entire bar at once, LOL)
    Pepper saver container
Mini pepper mill and extra peppercorns
    Tabasco sauce
Shopping list shaped like a chili pepper
Plastic seed bags (I always need these, especially this time of year, when I'm harvesting seeds)
A roll of plastic stretch tie for staking plants

She sent me a TON of seeds, some were "spicy" and others were on my wishlist:

Pepper 'Tollie's Sweet' (on my wishlist)
Pepper 'Tam Jalapeno' (I have been wanting this one forever!)
Pepper 'Chervena Chushka' (also on my wishlist)
Pepper 'Topepo Rosso' (yep, this one too!)
    Pepper 'Sheperd's Rams Horn'
    Oregano 'Wild Zaatar' (wishlist item)
Basil 'Greek Dwarf' (yep, another one)
Basil 'Fine Verde' (I know, it's unbelieveable ... I had to update my wishlist because she filled so many of them!)
    Basil 'Purple'
    Cilantro 'Slow-Bolt'
    Herb Mix 'Wild Italian'
Rocket (Arugula) (this one is new to me, but I can't wait to taste it)
    Radish 'Purple Plum'
    Radish 'Giant of Sicily'
Radish 'Philadelphia White Box' (another wishlist item)

    Non spicy wishlist items:
    Carrot 'St. Valery'
Cucumbers: Crystal Apple, Richmond Green, Thai Green, and Yok Kao
Beans: Marvel of Venice, Yellow Indian Woman
    Squash 'Sweet Dumpling'
    Pumpkin 'Rouge D'Etamps
Tomatoes: 'Costoluto Genovese, and 'Costoluto Fiorentino
Lettuces: 'Ruby' and Silvia (a red-leaf Romaine)

Did she spoil me, or what?

Thank you, thank you, Christy! You are a sweetheart!!!

    Bonnie
