NEW: Dan's Magazine Swap

dan_the_mailman

Over in the MNF group, we've been having a lot of fun with a book swap this month, so I thought I'd post a magazine swap to test the waters and see how much interest there'd be in having a book-swapping group here on the GW!

Here's what we'll be doing this time around. We'll each be sending out two issues of gardening or cooking magazines we receive, along with 5 packets of seeds. You may mix or match which type of magazines you send, and they should be no more than a year old. You'll need to e-mail me a note with your name, garden web name, address, and a brief description of the magazines you'll be sending out, by September 2nd. On the morning of September 3rd, I'll post a list of the magazines being offered, and we'll be able to choose which magazines we'd like to receive back. The picking order will be determined by how often you post. The most talkative person will go first, and so on and so on until all the magazines have been picked.

This should be a good way for each of us to try out new magazines and have some good conversation while doing so.

Dates to Remember:

September 2: Last day to sign up and send in your information.

September 3: Get online and pick your magazines...lol!

September 12: All magazines should be sent out by this date.

So, who wants to try out some newer magazines?

Dan

    Looking good here.
Yes I have cooking mags too.
Maybe I should offer an either/OR selection.

I have my magazines picked out but I will wait for the newest addition and read it first. I will take care not to mess it up or tear out any pages.

I went to the Goodwill today cause my daughter needs a vacuum cleaner for her new college apartment. I couldn't resist two cookbooks that were staring at me. They are both full of low fat recipes and I can't wait to try them.

Dan, are you still doing Weight Watchers? I am still a life time member but have put on a little weight so am over my goal. That means I must attend one meeting a month and pay a 13 dollar charge. If I want to attend other meetings, I will have to pay the 13 dollars each time. I go once a month and pay it but that's ok cause it still keeps me in check. I have still lost and kept off 37 pounds. I still need to get rid of this extra ten. I will have to do it before my daughters wedding next June.

Well, I hope we get a few more people to sign up but there is still time.

    Hey, lurking again!
Dan, I've read RS on and off since I got married. For the past 3 years, my daughter has bought me a subscription for Christmas. I've always used it to keep in touch with what's going on in music, and I've found some good CDs because of it. At times, it's a little hard to take, but mostly I can read it without wondering what the H--L! My DD keeps me up to date with music too, altho our tastes vary a little. We "grew up" together listening to CCR, and we both like the White Stripes, but she draws the line at Beethoven and Sarah Brightman!
Enough Lurking! Better get over to the MNF Book Swap and see what's happening!
    Later!

Hey Dan, would it be ok to offer an either/or choice as Beth suggested. I have numerous types of gardening and cooking magazines so I could give someone a choice of two of their favorites from a selection I would post. If it complicates things, no problem. Just let me know.

Margo, I don't think that would be a problem. When you send me your info, include a list of what you're offering and whoever your recipient is can make their choice of what they'd like from you that week-end. Good idea!

Dan, saw in other posts that you are not feeling well. Sorry to hear that. Take care of yourself. I am sure Stella and Bump are looking after you.

I am in the process of reading the second magazine I am going to offer in this swap. I don't know how I ended up getting so many subscriptions. Guess I just can't pass up a good magazine deal.

    OKAY,OKAY COUNT ME IN!!!!
I have lots of magazines!cooking mags, gardening mags, quilting mags etc....My momma says I`m addicted to magazines!!!
I`m kind of quiet usually but I`m breaking out sooo get ready to listen! Robin

Could we make available more than 1 set of magazines?Like if I offered 2 or 3 sets and then got the same number in return?
    I`m getting excited now!!!!

Thanks for the well wishes everyone! This morning I'm feeling a lot better! The fever broke yesterday, and I've had a good nights sleep, so I'd say I'm back up to about 95% or so. I'm going to write myself a short day at work if I can, so that'll be good. Again, THANKS!

Shirley, I've been doing some executive thinking (mostly while I was dizzy and fuzzy-headed...lol). Here's what I've come up with... I'd say that 1 book is usually worth 2 magazines, wouldn't you all agree? So here's what we're going to do...
Let's open the possibilities up just a bit. Anyone and everyone can offer up EITHER 2 cooking/gardening magazines OR 1 cooking/gardening book to satisfy this swap.

    UPDATED TRADING CONTENTS:
    5 PACKETS OF SEEDS
    1 GARDENING/COOKING BOOK OR 2 GARDENING/COOKING MAGAZINES

Hello Robin. While everyone is welcome to include more than the 5 packets of seeds and 2 magazines in their package, nobody will be receiving more than 1 package back from this swap. I too have lots of gardening and cooking magazines and could flood this swap with them, but that would not be right. It would be like sending in 1000 packets of marigolds to a seed swap, and expecting to get 1000 varieties of seeds back while everyone else goes home with just marigolds. That wouldn't be right, now would it?
I love your enthusiasm, but don't forget, there may be more book/magazine swaps, and you'll want something to offer for those too.

Hi Robin, nice to see you here again.
I'll do another Mag swap one next month if people want to trade more OR we could just set up some trades on the side.
There is a forum on GW for trading books but it is pretty slow. Also, seems to be more spam activity recently than actual GW type trades.
Dan glad you are feeling better.

    Hi everyone !

Dan, glad to hear you are feeling better ! I think having a choice between a book or 2 magazines is great ! It's always so hard to choose ! Also I think it is great to swap books and magazines, its a fun way to "recycle" and stay green by keeping books and magazines out of the landfills and helps those of us whose bookshelves and/or magazine racks are already bursting at the seams ;-)

    Hi everyone,
Guess I shall have to pass on this one because after I read a magazine, I tear out the info I want to keep and put in a binder. I don't have any magazines that I could offer that are intact. I do have some quilting magazines that were given to me a few months ago that are probably 10 years old that I haven't gone through. BUT I usually tear out the patterns that I want to keep from them also.
    Sorry.

I have looked at this twice, but I think I will sit out this time around. I will look in again if this becomes a revolving swap.
The only magazine I subscribe to now is "Backyard Poultry", and I keep those. You never know when you might need to review an article on beak trimming.
    Alana

  • beth_b_kodiak

I like Backyard Poultry and Hobby Farm too.
Oh and Mother Earth and .....
i don't mind how old a mag is if I think the info is still useful or interesting.
I have quit getting some Mags because i had a big stack and could not part with any..... now trading is a different story.
I'll do that in a heartbeat.

Those who would like to join in on the swap but don't have magazines could always get a couple from friends, neighbors, or family.

I have been recording the magazines I do get and when they expire because I have totally lost count. I don't plan to renew some of them but the Herb magazine, Birds and Bloom, and Cooking Light are my favorite. I get All You and go through that front to back as soon as it comes. These are just a few of what I get. :)

Dan, glad you are feeling better.

    Good night. Margo

Alana, I also get 'Backyard Poulty" and love it. I have 31 chickens on my mini farm. I always wanted to be a farmer like my Dad, but this 1.5 acre is all I could afford and build a home to. So I guess this will have to do for my farm. Maybe someday I will have a barn built and get a couple of calves. Probably in my dream though.

Oh well...going to turn in since I leave for work at 5:00 in the morning.

Good morning everyone ! FREECYCLE is a great way to give away books and magazines that you no longer need ... I got a BOX full of older Mother Earth magazines last year and had a great time reading thru them. Even though they were old issues they still had great info on so many subjects !

My husband and I went on a bus ride with some friends to Windsor to the Casino. You pay 9 bucks for the ride there and when you arrive, they give you a 25.00 voucher to do what you want with. You can even cash it in and do something totally different. We played a little then headed down to Little Italy for lunch. Very good.

What I forgot was my magazine to read while I was on the bus. I want to get through several of them to decide which I am going to offer.

I came back with five dollars too. :) Next time, we are going to take the money and go into Little Italy and do some window shopping, lunch and just enjoy the day.

Margo, we go to the casino on Sundays for dinner. They have a buffet for $9.93, LOts of good food and a fantastic selection of desserts for those that are luck enough to be still eating deserts.
The gambling doesn't excite me and if I play at all it is the penny machines. I think a lot of people go for the food.
i'm re-reading my magazines now to decide which ones to offer.
    bb

  • smitties

BB, we played the penny machines too. My friend found one called Goldfish and it really paid off. Her 25 dollars was up to 39 when we went to eat lunch. When we got back, both machines were occupied and one gal was over 200 dollars on it. They never left while we were there so she played other games that just kept taking money away. She finally just decided to play til it was gone but she would love a few than gain a few. She finally cashed out at 20 bucks. It was just for fun. We don't use our own money on the machines.

Had a bonfire tonight and now it is time to head for bed. A full day of work awaits me for tomorrow.

    Have a good weekend. Margo

We got our monthly mail packet from home today and it had three new magazines in it.
This combines with the fresh produce from visitors and the farmers market.... I'm in hog heaven.
Also a nice special offer on a sub to hobby farm. Think I'm going to cave in and order that too. jack says you get too many magazines already. Well, I'm letting LHJ expire. That makes it even right? Have a Sunny Sunday

    Fire house chicken recipe
    12 servings

    12 boneless skinless chicken breasts
    1/4 cup salt
1 1/2 lb flour ( about 3 or 4 cups, have extra handy if needed0
    3 TSP seasoned salt
    2 tsp ground black pepper
    6 lg eggs
    cooking oil (Paula uses peanut)
Extra seasoned salt, and fresh parsley for garnish
rinse chicken well. Place in lg bowl and cover with cold water. Add salt and soak at least 30 min.
In separate bowl stir together flour, seasoned salt and pepper. In another bowl, beat eggs.
Drain chicken. Dip each piece in egg then in flour mixture.
place pieces on floured tray or cookie sheet.
Heat dutch oven half full of vegetable oil to 325 to 350
Dredge each piece of chicken in egg then flour again.
Shake off excess flour and place carefully into oil.
Fry chicken in batches, turning once or twice to get nice even golden brown.
remove from oil, drain on paper towels and garnish with extra seasoned salt and parsley if desired.
This makes a nice thick crunchy coating and the chicken stays very moist. Delicious....

Hello everyone, well in case you haven't seen or heard today's news but we had an earthquake today ! the epicenter was about 70 miles from us !! I had no idea what was going on ... I was in my car and could not imagine why it was rocking back n forth ! It lasted about 30 seconds ... thank goodness no injuries or any damage but we did get to go home early from work . I came home and put up more green beans ;-)

Dan, I will get my info to you asap !

    Iris

Apparently, that earthquake was felt here in Bowling Green were I live as well as in Columbus where I was today. I didn't notice anything. My daughter in law was at work in downtown Columbus. She thought she was having a dizzy spell due to hunger and kept typing.

I wanted to share with everyone that I spotted my first hummingbird moth tonight. It was pretty cool. My daughter fail to tell me she saw two of them last night.

Lightening tonight so I hope it brings some much needed rain.

  • beth_b_kodiak

We really need rain here too. Fire danger is posted as high and we are surrounded by miles of dry grass.
No humming bird moths but lots and lots of young humming birds. L'm pretty sure they are Black Chins but they still have juvenile feathers, They are crowding the feeders and empty them quickly.
The earth quake on the East Coast must have been quite a shock. Now it's time to start watching Irene.

  • smitties

Oh, we got rain! Lots of rain. Measured two inches. Lightening went on and on for a long time. How do I know this? I spent a lot of the night in a sleepless state. Grrrrr

  • smitties

It sure is quiet here at the magazine swap.

More storms last night and it was constant lightening for almost an hour. Looked like natures strobe light.

If you are considering using the Dish Network, DON'T. Every time it rains, it goes out and stays out during the whole storm. Even if it is just rain. It does no good if you want to know how bad conditions are. I asked the tech if this would happen when he was installing it because it happened with our previous company. He said no, I shouldn't have any problem. It was a nice rainfall again so we should be set for a while.

    Have a good day. smitties

I had to miss the book swap because I was away in CA for 2 weeks visiting my daughter and son-in-law and helping with my triplet grandsons. They are now almost 6 months old! Well, I got a late start signing up for this one so I will post a few times and see where that takes me - probably not to the front of the line... I hope everyone makes it safely through the storm. Who would think we would go right from earthquakes to a hurricane? It looks like we will be fine where I am - in fact, they don't even expect us to get any rain and we sure could use the rain. I am not wishing for a direct hit by the hurricane though. We had a night of worry when Hugo plowed through our state.
    Have a good day!

Busy time here at the ranch. there are extra cowhands here to help with separating the Mama cows and the calves. Seems to be a not too happy time for any of the involved parties. LOL
Also a couple grass fires started by lightening. One put out by helicopters dropping water and the other by men on the ground. This on the hottest day so far this year.
Irene seems to be header for DelMArVa and I still have family and a small farm there. Well, they have been through storms before so we say a prayer and hope for the best.
Jeannie, good to have you joining us.
How about some more baby pictures???

Hi everyone ! I have to go to the store right after work to get some hurricane supplies . I hope our power doesn't go out ... if we have to spend a rainy weekend indoors its much more fun with power , internet and cable ( not to mention my big stack of library books I just picked up a few days ago ) LOL I am worried about my pole beans , they are just hitting their stride ... and my newly sprouted collards and kale ... I hope they don't drown ... ;-( But most of all I hope everyone makes it thru safe and sound ...
