FotessLogo2012

September 26 marks the 238th birthday of one of the nation's first environmentalists, John Chapman. Children usually learn the Tall Tales version of the life of Johnny Appleseed, but the reality is more interesting than the legend.
He was a true conservationist who believed that it was his duty to live a minimalist existence so as not to waste the earth's resources. He lived his philosophy in many ways, but respect for all races of people caused him to be regarded as a thoughtful person and his respect for animals led him to a vegetarian lifestyle. He was known for buying old horses set for slaughter and putting them out to pasture. Clothing to John Chapman served a practical purpose only and new clothes did not fit with his frugal stewardship of the natural world. His appearance reflected his belief.
Rather than wandering aimlessly planting apple trees as is often stated, he bought large tracts of land where he thought people would be settling and established orchards. He or his agents then sold, bartered or gave away trees, fruit, seeds, and even whole orchards.

This month's swap will be held Johnny Appleseed style. You must be a member of FOTESS to participate. If you are not a member and would like to join please contact Jeanne/sandlapper_rose or Shirley/sjc48 for assistance.

Send your partner 1 of each:

1. Something you have left over from this or a previous year's gardening season. This should be an inexpensive item like purchased seeds you did not sow, a pair of gloves you never got around to using, a package of plant labels, seed envelopes, something you accidentally bought two of, a gardening book you have read and no longer need, a nursery marking pen, a dibber, a package of garden note cards, any small garden related item that is useful or nice to have, but that you just never have gotten around to using or used only gently.

2. An apple themed item. This could be purchased or homemade. Examples would be a division of apple mint, seeds for apple cucumber or mayapple or something else with apple in the name, an apple corer, an apple potholder, a jar of homemade apple jelly, etc. This is a creative group-I am sure you can think of many more.

Sign ups will be until September 7, partner assignments will be posted by September 9, packages should be mailed by September 20 to be sure everyone receives by September 26. You may ship in whatever size container you need as long as you are fulfilling the requirements outlined for what to send and you get and post delivery confirmation. You can use Priority Mail or First Class Mail if your items weigh less than 13 ounces-that's up to you, but DC is not optional.

We'll play two games for appley (okay, not a word) prizes. The first one will take place when we get at last five players not counting myself, the second will start at the end of sign ups.
I hope a lot of you will play this month!
Alana

Sounds like a fun one. I am thinking my life might be at a slow pace by September with the two younger ones in college and my daughter starting to feel better.

I also love apples so I am in.

Alana, great idea! I'm in!

Just got back from Staples; I had some extra Rewards coupons, so I bought a package of sticker paper. I've never used these before.

Hmmmm, apples, stickers, could get interesting!

I think I lead a kind of, sorta minimalist life, in that, I minimalize in some areas, so I can maximize in others, like photography, books, trips, that kind of thing. But I bet we all do that, to a certain extent. It surprizes me what I can live without!

And I can identify with Chapman when it comes to what I wear. I HATE shopping for clothes and so I hang onto clothes forever!

And If the outfit is not downright sad, it is at least recognizable: "Why, yes, I did wear this to the last class reunion, And?"

Okay, enough babbling!
Alana, thanks for hosting this month!
Shirley!

Apples, apples, apples. What better way to start off Fall. Love it! I'm in :)

Shirley, funny story about clothes. I got a gift certificate to a clothing store for my birthday. Hubby was on vacation so I got to go all by myself, with no little ones. That never happens. I stroll through all the ladies racks, and think, GOD! I wouldn't be buried in that! Next, I find myself in the kids area...where I proceeded to buy 2 dresses, tights, shoes, jeans, and a very cute sweatshirt for my 2 kids. I'm hopeless...I'm still wearing the same jeans from 8 years ago...their still GOOD, lol! :)

I don't know, Alana, something's up, for sure!
How was the movie? What did you see?

Vina, jeans are the essence of "frugality!"
You start out wearing them for "good".
Wait a few years and wear them for grocery shopping.
Wait a few more years and wear them for gardening!
You can make cut offs of them, and I've seen a pattern for a jeans quilt!
And I've never seen anyone who looks bad in jeans!

I'm working on my Johnny Appleseed package; found some neat stuff in my old craft boxes. Now to put it all together. I think I'm going to be stumped on the seeds, tho.

Hey, on with the day!
Shirley!

Alana,
I love your theme dedicated to the kindness and conservationist spirit of John Chapman! I had no idea, but can see that I will have to read more about him.

Count me in for this swap!

Katie

 o
RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

And Katie makes 5. Welcome Katie. If all of us had a dose of John Chapman's eccentricities the world would be the better for it.
Shirley, I saw Expendables II. If I can't see a horror film, action is my second choice and this one was okay.

In the interest of fairness because game 1 is a matter of who submits correct answers first, I will be posting the game tomorrow evening between 7:30 and 8:00 barring unforeseen circumstances. That will allow for more joiners and everyone will know when to look for it.
Have a good evening.

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Our family prayer at Thanksgiving, Easter, Christmas is the Johnny Appleseed song. We all (about 30 of us now) hold hands and sing:
Oh the Lord is good to me
And so I thank the Lord
For giving me the things I need
The sun and the rain and appleseed.
The Lord is good to me.
Followed by two rousing rounds of Amens.

Count me in!
Heidi

Heidi, We love the Johnny Appleseed prayer too. I think over the years I have taught it to hundreds of Girl Scouts.

I have never heard the Johnny Appleseed prayer...thanks for sharing...love it!

 o
RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Heidi, I love your family tradition! Welcome Beth and Dianne!

Here is the promised game. If no one has answered all 10 correctly by this time tomorrow evening, I will post another hint.

Apples were essential food for European settlers who brought seeds and grafted stock with them as they moved westward into America. Because apples are capable of enormous genetic diversity in the seeds from a single apple and growing conditions in the US presented different challenges to Malus pumila, numerous strains developed and were perpetuated when they exhibited desirable traits.
Only a relative handful of those persist in our culture of perfection. Below are several heirloom varieties that can still be found in backyards and old orchards, and increasingly in commerce.
I have provided all of the vowels as well as the first and last 4 consonants in the alphabet in the word game below. Use the other 13 letters from g to v to complete the names of these venerable apple varieties.
The first one to respond with all 10 correct answers will receive a prize.

1. Be_ ** Da_i_

2. Ba_dwi_

3. _ed ** De_iciou_

4. _ _ i_e_ ** _o_de_

5. A_ _a_ _a_ ** B_ac_

6. E_o_u_ ** _ _i_ ze_be_ _ (hint, Jefferson grew this one at Monticello)

7. _ed ** _u_e

8. Ca_ _ead

9. Ea_ _y ** _a_ _e_ _

10. _o_ _ _e_ _ ** _ _y

Ok, I'm going to give it a go.

Ben Davis
Baldwin
Red Delicious
Grimes Golden
Arkansas Black
Esopus Spitzenberg
Red June
Cathead
Early Harvest
Northern Spy

After reading about some of these, it seems maybe I can grow apples in hot & humid Mississippi, if I pick the right heirloom variety... Hmmm, that would be awesome. I've always thought it was too hot here.

Wow, I won?! Sweet! I wasn't sure if I made a mistake or not. My mind is not what it usually is these days - - feeling kinda cluttered and unfocused.

Hurricane Isaac will be bringing us lots of rain here in Mississippi. Some wind, too. It is starting this afternoon. Shouldn't be a big deal for us, but I have family & friends down in Baton Rouge (my hometown) and New Orleans. I hope this just blows over with minimal flooding and no wind damage.

Katie

 o
RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Yeah me too Katie. We had some family coming here (from Tickfaw) but now that it is expected to pass over us here they changed their minds. Our electricity goes out for hours at a time for virtually any, I mean any minor storm. We were out for a week after Gustav. So they decided to ride it out
where they are. They had come here for a storm before (can't remember which one) and after 2 days of no electricity here they went back home. And we promptly left as the heat is just ridiculous.

Tons of family all over down south. Praying constantly for everyone's safety.

I would love to join Alana! I have decided to downsize my gardening book collection. Who needs a hundred? lol it's what I do on cold wet winter rainy days. Go to *mazon and buy more gardening books. It's funny I'm not up for shopping either except online. lol So what a nice way to down size but to share! I have lots of things to fit the bill for this theme! This will be my 1st one here (gotta make an impression)! :)

Hi neighbor! (waving at Rena'). Yeah, I was thinking about you at I typed my last post, as I think you are the only other gulf coastie around.
Here's hoping Isaac is completely benign. Katrina, Rita, and Gustav were just horrendous!

Just finished planting some fall flowers. Put in Agastache Blue Fortune, Rudbeckia fulgida Goldstrum, Coreopsis grandiflora Sunfire, Heliopsis helianthoides Summer Sundrops, and Asclepias tuberosa. Even got seeds off the milkweed already. Yay! Dirt therapy!!!

 o

Congrats Katie.

I hope everyone who is in line of the hurricane stays safe. I also hope the power does not fail you. Keep us posted as you ride it out. Will be praying for you all.

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Hey Gulf Coast neighbors :)

I'm in lower AL on the AL side of the AL/FL state line...we don't get the roughest parts of the hurricanes but we do get tornadoes and bad floods off of them when they come through plus on the worst ones with the highest winds we're close enough in that it does damage when they come up this way...I'm feeling sorry for New Orleans where the last I checked it was expected...maybe it won't be too bad wherever it lands...ya'll stay safe and no rooftop hurricane parties!!!...we're in a town where the electric goes out for every little storm too...so if i don't show up for a few days that is likely what is going on...may ya'll have enough rains out of this to keep things fresh and healthy but not too much to drown things away... :)

For you ladies in warmer climates, you absoloutley can grow certain apple varieties. I planted a bare root Granny Smith apple tree 21 years ago...very productive. I remember when I planted it, my grass mower gardener told me that there was no way you could grow apple trees in Southern California. Fiddle...dee...dee I said!!!!

Rena', I am your FOTESS sponsor...if you have any Q's, please do not hesitate to ask.

Dianne, Katie and Rena', be well and safe!!

LOL @ Dianne - hi neighbor!!
Awww, those snakes are just doing what snakes do. Dianne, I've eaten rattlesnake before. It was fried. Not too bad. I usually stand by the motto that if you're gonna kill an animal, you should eat it. :) LOL!

Yesterday husband & I dug up some cardinal flower from the very soggy side of the road (it was so wet, the water & mud almost went over my knee boots), to transplant to a very soggy flowerbed of mine. While digging the holes to transplant into, a little three-lined salamander came crawling out of the bark. I was super excited! They are not that common around here. Yay, salamander habitat!

Wet & rainy here, but not bad otherwise. Glad for that! My newly planted flowers are appreciating the rain, too.

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Sept 7-8 is Hay Days. Yep, Cozad Nebreska is the alfalfa capital of the world. (Alfalfa is the plant and when it's dried it's hay. They cut the alfalfa, haul it in and dry it in huge driers. I think it smells great. People with allergies don't. If it's a good year they cut several times.) We don't have anything as exciting as Johnny Appleseed or Peanut Days, but we have gutter bowling and parade. Our school mascot is the Haymaker, too!

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Hi Katie, Moonfire, Dianne and everyone else! Everything is fine here in Trout sadly lots of damage and flooding many other places. Praying for everyone with all the catastrophes.

Yes, that is why I have butterfly bushes. They bring so many beautiful butterflies. But oddly I have less this summer than last summer. This summer we have had rain every few days. I had to water some in May but that was it. Last year our summer was so dry that I was even having to water my cactus garden once a month! So we had a drought last year but also had many more butterflies. And my garden is a year older so produces more flowers than ever. Baffling, does anyone have a clue as to why that would be?

And about the plant addiction that so many of us have in common... :) Someone has to cool the earth down by planting more greenery right?! Of course I am! lol And I'm just the girl to help. Glad to be in the company of so many helpers! lol

Loved the jeans convo. also. Shopping I hate unless it involves plant nurseries and then oh my goodness I have
boundless energy! Sometimes it's lacking when it comes time to weed though.

ANNIE (canyonwind)- Thank you so much for being my sponsor! That was very kind of you. This will be my 2nd GW swap. The other one was AFM with Vina hosting (flowergirl) and I made
a faux pas! I was so excited I listed what I sent! Everyone had a laugh on that one. lol So I suppose I should only list what I receive on this one too and not what I send right? I promise I'll try to make your job easy and not commit any more faux pas! lol

Thanks to all for accepting me as a member of FOTESS!

Leader (Jeanne?) - I included my phone # in my application and you can include it in my info. that is sent to the other members.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

LOL, Rena', I LOVE that you use the term "faux pas" !! I use it often, too, but it is not often that I see or hear others using it. No worries about your faux pas, tho, it was pretty funny :)

Hurrican Isaac only brought us 1 inch of rain here in Mississippi, but the MS coast received way more. My sibs in Baton Rouge, LA never even lost power, and my parent's place in New Orleans is ok, as well. Some friends of mine in southern LA and MS are experiencing flooding, but none of them have water in their homes. Isaac was mild, and I am glad for it.

As some of you know, I am a crazy travelling woman. This month brings me travels this time on a personal basis, finally! On Sept. 26 my husband, me, my sister, and her 3 yr old son depart on an adventure! We are driving to nw Oregon and Washington for a cousin wedding, a family reunion party, and camping & fishing for 2.5 weeks. I am so excited! Every year, my husband and I go camping and fly-fishing out west somewhere. This year we decided to combine it with the trip to Oregon. Will surely post a few photos, but will have to bow out of the Oct FOTESS swap.

I will be working all weekend, but c'est la vie. All the extra work allows me to take extensive leave at other times of the year. I have the travel bug bad!

OK, enough rambling....

Be safe this holiday. Traffic on my way home last night was horrible.

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Have a wonderful vacation Ellie!

This weekend we will start Appleseed Bingo, but for today here is a quiz with an Apple prize for the first to complete it correctly. All you have to do is supply answers for the following:

1. What reason did John Chapman give when queried about why he never married?

2. Why did Chapman eschew grafting, relying only on planting seeds for his apple trees?

3. Because his apples were sour and not "table quality" they were used chiefly to make this staple beverage.

4. John Chapman belonged to and zealously practiced his religion; a branch of Christianity called ____________________.

5. In addition to being an orchardist, Chapman was an herbalist and planted medicinal herbs right along with his fruit trees and bushes. One of the plants he used was an invasive that was native to the Southeast and that he caused to spread in states like Illinois, New Jersey and Indiana. It was purported to have anti-malarial qualities, but is also said to aid digestion, soothe burns and repel unwanted animals like rodents.
The common name has canine overtones.

6. He traveled light and legend, supported by drawings depicting his unusual attire, stipulates that he wore an unusual hat. What was it?

7. and 8. There are festivals and activities in autumn to celebrate his life. Other tributes include the street name "Johnny Appleseed Lane". Where is it? Why is the location an appropriate one in regard to John Chapman's life?

9. and 10. What is the name of the poem and who is the author of the poem that contains this passage:

Leaving behind august Virginia,
Proud Massachusetts, and proud Maine,
Planting the trees that would march and train
On, in his name to the great Pacific,
Like Birnam wood to Dunsinane,
Johnny Appleseed swept on,
Every shackle gone,
Loving every sloshy brake,
Loving every skunk and snake,
Loving every leathery weed,
Johnny Appleseed, Johnny Appleseed,
Master and ruler of the unicorn-ramping forest,
The tiger-mewing forest,
The rooster-trumpeting, boar-foaming, wolf-ravening forest,
The spirit-haunted, fairy-enchanted forest,
Stupendous and endless,
Searching its perilous ways
In the name of the Ancient of Days.

Good luck and Happy Apples,
Alana

2. He wouldn't be around to tend them;
3. Cider/applejack;
4. Swedenborg;
5. dogbane;
6. Tin pan;
7. Leominster, MA
8. His birthplace;
9. In Praise of Johnny Appleseed;
10. Vachel Lindsey

Hope everyone had a nice weekend. I'm sitting on the porch having a "cocktail" and watching the hoards of migrant hummingbirds we have been fortunate to attract. We must have at least 40 hummers buzzing about!

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Pretty good Shirley-7 out of 10. I wanted this game to be harder than the first but it appears I over did it. Thank you for taking the time to answer.
The 3 answers that were missing were
1. It was his belief that if he stayed single on earth, he would enjoy 2 spirit wives in the afterlife.
2. He did not graft trees because he was afraid that cutting the tree caused suffering.
5. Dog Fennel, Eupatorium capillifolium.

Good job Shirley! I will send your prize out shortly.

Have a good evening everyone,
Alana

Alana, it was a little hard, but mostly, I kept finding other info that I had to check out, and then when I came back here to answer the questions, I couldn't remember everything. I spent lots of time with Vachel Lindsay, whom I haven't thought of since high school! Thanks for that!

Cool, rainy day here today. I couldn't believe the butterflies that were out, but not the Mourning Cloak, those FS really scared him off!

Looking forward to Bingo!

Annie, got the email, I'll be sending soon! I'm busy "tweaking" the perennial sweet peas today; 6 plants were just a little too much for that area, so we're whittling it down to two, but, jeez, what a tangled mess!
As soon as I get to work out front again, I'll dig up the penstemon and mail it out to ya! Would you like to have 4 0r 5? Ha Ha, just kidding, but it is another group of plants that outgrew the area! Makes ya wonder what I was thinking when I planted them!

Good Morning!
Alana, I just sent my words!

The perennial sweetpeas have been conquered! Next up, the passiflora incarnata! I'm going to try to get rid of the whole plant, wish me luck. Another tangled mess which includes the stinging nettle, wild bergemot and what's left of the NEAs. And some kind of grass that I got in a swap last year, which was totally covered up, did that bloom? AGGGHHH!!!
Shirley!

Okay, I had a couple minutes to check the thread and I am so excited!!

WOO HOO!!! APPLE BINGO :D

Sending my words right now.

Have a great Friday!!

Hey Shirley--onward and upward with the plant battle! I dream of the day I have that problem. I'm still trying to fill in the empty spaces!
I sent in my bingo words!
My daughter is eating a lot of applesauce right now. I'd like to tell you it's in honor of Johnny Appleseed, but it's because she got braces and her teeth hurt!

Alana, I just emailed my BINGO words to you.

Oh Shirley, battling stinging nettle? BOOO, HISS! You need a big stick to whack it with.

Rena' it's been hot & steamy here too, now that the sun is back out in full force.

Ellie, have fun on your vacation! Will you be visiting any of the giant trees of California? I still haven't seen the giant redwoods. It's on my "to do" list. I also have always wanted to see sugar pines. Those are some crazy trees, too. I did see (and hug!) bristlecone pines last year in Nevada, though. I will be starting around Portland, OR, then to Ariel, WA for a wedding, eventually across to the Walla Walla, WA area for a family reunion party. Somewhere in between those events, we will be poking around in Gifford Pinchot NF, around Mt. St. Helen's, and later fishing the Imnaha River in ne Oregon.

I think I'm going to need more than a big stick, Katie, I started ruthlessly cutting everything back and discovered that the stinging nettle is still in it's WS container! And of course, it grew thro the holes at the bottom, oh, yea. And somehow, the clematis is all involved too. Why did I let this go so long? And why do I get the feeling that no matter what I do now, the SN and the PI will be back next year?
Cie la Guerre! For real.

Oh i gotta say i'm jealous of all these trips lol...but i'm gonna travel thru ya'll so hope there's some pics if ya got time to post them!!! lol...ya'll have fun and be safe :)

Annie you're so right...if you've ever felt it you won't forget it...we used to have it growing wild in the pastures when i was a kid...wearing shorts thru the woods to pick blueberries or in the cow pastures to pick them tall skinny blooming purple/lavender flowers that are weeds my grannie was so proud to put in a vase and brag about because i picked them for her lol was a no-no...the stinging nettle would get you every time...so we had to wear real clothes and deal with picking beggers lice (another weed) out of our socks and shoestrings hahaha...oh sometimes i miss being a kid ;P

Alana I emailed you my bingo words :)

 o
RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

This is true if you ever get into it your brain will pull up the term stinging nettle instantly even if you have never experienced it before. Last year was the 1st time that I have ever gotten into it. And really didn't even know what it looked like. As soon as I ascertained I wasn't covered in 1000 fire ants my brain screamed STINGIN' NETTLE lol. I hate that stuff!

Actually, I'm trying to keep the Stinging Nettle, it's a great host plant for the Red Admiral. I'm moving it to the other side of the house as soon as I figure out what I'm doing with that entanglement! Found some Wild Bergemot and a Purple Volcano Sage. Really surprised they didn't die off, they were totally covered up.

And, a Happy, Belated Birthday to FOTESS member Beth!

Yea! Partners and Bingo!

Have a great day!
Shirley!

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

HBD Beth! I sent you an email about Bingo.

I am going to give Beth until 8 eastern tonight to send her bingo words just in case she has not had a chance to check in yet. Everyone else has sent their list.
I will post the first word and the partner list shortly thereafter.

I had planned on working to clear some weeds today, but it is raining. That's not a bad thing.

I received my prize for the 1st game in the mail yesterday! Alana sent a lovely garden banner with apple art on it. Very festive, and very much an Autumn decoration, with colors of burgundy, gold and green! Thanks, Alana! Hope the tornadoes and winds pass your area by.

Happy B-day, Beth! Are you still in Arizona these days?

Looking forward to the BINGO game, and to PARTNERS!

Ok, back to work for me. I am trying to finish up writing a paper for my class. The very last assignment...hoorah!

 o

Happy Birthday!

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Beth is on board; everyone has submitted their bingo words so there is no point in waiting for the first word. It is great fun for me that 100% of you are playing Bingo!
I had a friend who came around to help move a refrigerator draw today's word. The word of the day is 9. Roxbury Russett .

I went back two swaps and tried not to pair up anyone who sent and received to the same person recently, but with a somewhat static group like this I am sure some of these pairings have taken place in the past.
Here are our partners:
Shirley and Heidi
Vina and Katie
Beth and Annie
Rena' and Jeanne

Here is where it transitions to senders and receivers rather than partners. Kudos to whoever started doing it this way to deal with odd numbers of players.

Alana sends to Dianne
Dianne sends to Margo
Margo sends to Alana

If anyone sees a conflict, let me know.
Thanks again,
Alana

Jeanne came up with that method of pairing partners with an uneven number of participants - really a good idea!

Have a nice Sunday, All!

Happy Birthday, Beth. Your day is almost over with here on the East coast, but I guess you have a little bit longer over your way.

Happy to have Rena' as my partner! I haven't planned my package yet, but dont' worry, Rena' - it will get done... This is such a fun swap and I have lots of ideas.

I need to print out my bingo list so I can keep track of the apple words... talk with everyone soon.

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Alana, I still have my list of participant addresses so I am all set with addresses. I will be getting your package together. I have the items so shouldn't be but a couple days til I send it.

Dianne, will be sending you my address as soon as I post this. Hope you are getting your gardening chores accomplished. Our son is visiting this weekend as we had our downtown Black Swamp arts festival this weekend. Always a fun time.

Another stray kitten literally appeared at our doorstep Friday morning. I swear the house must give off the scent of a sucker that takes in strays. This is the eleventh one to show up. She has an issue with her health with runny nose and sneezing but seems to already be getting better. Fortunately, I have a friend who is in need of a new kitten but I am going to vet her first before I give her away. I don't want to pass on an issue to my friend.

Happy Sunday everyone. Margo

 o
RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Thanks Margo. Dianne, I expect to mail your package on Saturday, so it will be next week when you receive it. If your address is not on the FOTESS list, please email it to me.

I won't make you wait until this evening when I'm home for another word. The word on the street is Red Delicious .

Good starts,
Alana

Okie dokie Alana...I think it is on the FOTESS list but I'll email it to you anyways so you won't have to search :)

Well, it's Firey Skippers-3, other butterflies-0; yeah, they chased away a Giant Swallowtail and a GSF today, in addition to the Mourning Cloak last week. This is getting silly; could you at least let me have ONE good shot!?

Have a great day tomorrow!

I think I got my grants done. I'm sending them out to someone to look them over before I send them in. Whew! I also dug up Lamb's Ear I planted in the park and brought some of it home to put around the foundation of my house. It grew so fast and furious in the park with automatic sprinklers!
I am loving the apple swap. So many fun ideas. I'm having the same trouble...hard to decide just what to send.

Heidi, I can clearly remember making mistakes on my grant forms and the delay it caused!

Some friends and I went over to Old Woodlawn Cemetery today to take pictures; this little cat came down off her porch and followed us all over the cemetery all day! We were worried that she would follow us home, but when we got back to her house, she went right back up on the porch!

Have a great day tomorrow!

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Got my first Bingo word today.

Shirley, what a beautiful cat. Our stray of the year last year is a tortoise shell but she has more black than orange. Such cool markings.

Annie, my daughter is doing better, thank you. No real reason the cyst was so bad but poor thing has 1700 in bills to pay because of deductibles.

I am going to do up my package on my day off Thursday and get it in the mail. I had to use my other day off to take kitty to the vet. She has a upper respiratory issue she should get rid of on her own. No ear mites or fleas but does had parasites that are being treated. I am going to get her to my friend next week when I know she is well on her way to good health. The big thing is she does not have feline aids or leukemia.

Will post dc on Thursday or Friday. Margo

Oh, boy, what a sweet kitty!! Margo, you & I are the same - I must admit, I have a soft spot for stray animals. I ESPECIALLY have a soft spot for orange boy kitties.

Heidi, do tell about your grant! Curious minds want to know!

It is starting to feel like autumn here in MS the last 4 days, my favorite time of year! And here comes October, my favorite month!

Oh, I may have missed it, but is there an updated FOTESS address list? (newer than June 2012)?

Apples are amazing fruits and trees! I am reminded of the "annual trip out west" my husband and I took last year. In one of the *most* remote places in the continental US - south of Jarbidge, NV (look that up on the map!), we found an apple tree growing along the Jarbidge River. Stopped and picked up a few fruits, and they were so nice and tart. Had to have been an heirloom.

Katie

 o
RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Shirley, that really is a pretty kitty. Glad she went back home though. It does not sound like you need another right now.
Katie, what a surprise to see you mention Jarbidge. We visited there last summer too and I loved it. When we finally arrived I said " I could live here" Obviously, I like isolation. LOL We left by the road with the 15 degree hill. Did you go that way? Either way is exciting but we really wanted 'to see it all" Quite a trip to remember.
Feels like autumn here too and it is very welcome.

 o
RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

We should be getting out a new list with birthdays and addresses, etc. soon. I think June was the last time we sent it out. I need to send a few e-mails back and forth with Shirley to make sure the list is all up to date. We'll try to get that done soon.

The 50th annual Kentucky Apple Festival will take place in Paintsville Kentucky on October 5-6. I have been through Paintsville, but not to the Festival. The Brushy Mountain Apple Festival in North Wilkesboro NC takes place on October 6, The National Apple Harvest Festival in Gettysburg PA takes place the first two weekends in October, and that is just to name a few. I had no idea there were so many apple related celebrations all over the country. A few have already taken place, but to find one near you, try the link I've added. There are many that are not at this link, but it covers a lot of territory.

The word of the day is cider .
Have a good one!

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Photobucket
I am the part-time coordinator for an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful--where our programming comes from. The money to pay for this, including my salary, comes from a fund the state oversees. When you buy a tire, for example, you pay a fee. That fee goes to this fund. My job is a lot of education around reduce, reuse, recycle. The state started a scoring process. I have to show 75% cash/inkind match to score well, specify donation amounts and name who is donating (and that made my brain work). No, they don't allow certain donations to count such as bottles of water, food or t-shirts. My job gets divided into two areas, hence--2 grants: 1. public education/litter abatement 2. recycling. Since the state is changing their ways one grant is for Jan 1-Dec 31, 2013 (4 quarters). The other grant is for Jan 1, 2013-June 30, 2014 (6 quarters) so I had to do more math (my weak point). The part I like is to 'show off' the program-photos of kids making things out of recycled products like cereal box guitars, lightning bugs with glow sticks out of plastic water bottles, etc. The state wanted me to take the photos out of my grant proposal this year, but a picture is worth 1,000 words!
This year is crucial because to simplify things the state will be setting up a "base amount" for affiliates in good standing so we know year-to-year that we have at least X amount of money to work with. If I mess it up...there won't be a base of money.
The best part is our recycling program. My organization applied for grants and received money to buy recycle trailers over the years. We park them on school property-3 elementary schools and the high school. The city pays the insurance on the trailers. The school pays an employee to hitch the trailer to a school vehicle and drive it the 10 miles to the recycle center and back. My group pays the license/registration fees, upkeep & maintenance. The recycle center weighs, bales and sells the recyclables, sending half the money back to the school it came from. The school buys textbooks, playground equipment, bins to put around the school with that money. I've never found another place that worked with so many different agencies to make it work. The kids recycle right at school since the trailer is parked right there. Parents/residents can drop off their recycling, too.
So in 10 pages or less I list everything I do, list it again and describe it, include a timeline, list all partnerships, explain how I will measure everything, why the state should consider funding, list any possible alternate sources of funds, include a budget and also the budget from the adjoining grant.
A third grant I'm working on is for another high school. They want a recycle trailer, about $10,000. I am getting quotes, asking for letters of support and trying to get the faculty advisor organized. They need to find $500 cash match. I have an idea for that, too, but I can't get all the bugs worked out--not yet.
I love the picture of the cat. What beautiful markings.
Shirley, your Apple Box went out today. I had more fun saving things to put in the box. The extra shovel I bought in June and didn't use didn't make it, though. It was too big for the box!

Heidi, I thought you meant school grants - Although I have to say what you've described sounds MUCH harder to get together. Love the pictures of the kids-the little boy on the right really looks like he is going to play that guitar!

Your package went out today too! The DC# is 03121430000296857261. Should be there by Friday! Shame about the shovel - just kidding!

Beth, you're right, two cats are MORE than enough!

My daughter and her family are coming up next weekend and we are going to the Erie Apple Orchard, about 10 miles from Monroe. In addition to all things apple, they have a craft barn, pony rides, hay rides and other neat stuff for families to do. Should be fun!

Have a great day tomorrow!

Wow! Heidi, your job sounds very satisfying, being able to make such a positive impact on your community - I love it. The photo of the boys is priceless, too.

Beth, how funny that we were both in Jarbidge last year!? We visited in September. It was such a remote spot - which I think is perfect, too. From what I understand, you can't get into or out of the town of Jarbidge during winter. Yes - nice and isolated! We came in from the south, a beautiful backcountry drive crossing through the Jarbidge Mountains, then camped for several days south of town, close to the wilderness boundary. We fished the Jarbidge River both north and south of the town, which made for some exciting fishing stories for me. When we left, we headed north into Idaho, for more amazing scenery.

Headed to the town of Jarbidge, NV. This is the "road" from the south, looking back at what we had crossed over:

Had to go to the eye doctor this morning because I was having issues with my eyes at work yesterday. I was seeing a watery like area in the corner of my eye with a prism of colors and the the other eye developed a prism like line. Doc says he thinks it is an aura that people have associated with migraines. I had a bad headache last week so he figures it is related to that. My eyes checked out nice and healthy.

I am working on my box right now so hope to have it mailed tomorrow. My eyes were dilated so I am waiting for that to go away so I can go drive to the post office to get the weight. I then print the label at home to save money :)

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Katie - You ate snake? Oh, I would especially have nightmares if I ate them. Bleck! lol But that is a good thing if you kill it you are gonna eat it. One things for sure it will make you think twice before killing something. Around here (not me now) but my dad, brothers, cousins etc. go by "I eat whatever don't eat me first." I love to crawfish, but I can't stand the taste, it tastes just like mud hence the term mudbugs maybe. My kids love to eat them and to go crawfishin' but you know whereever there is lots of crawfish there are a lot of moccasins since they love to eat them too.

What a pretty pic posted Katie.

Heidi - That's a good thing you do!

Margo - That is so nice you take the kitties to the vet 1st before giving them away. It is so sad abandoned animals are everywhere here. If I drive 8 miles in any one direction their will be at least 1 dog that someone dumped off in the road.

I hope that never happens to your eyes again Margo! I'm glad the Dr. said that your eyes are O.K.

Hello to everyone!

This apple theme is a wonderful one. Thanks so much for thinking of it, Alana, and being our hostess.

Jeanne, my favorites now are Red Delicious, and I remember how good the apples tasted, that grew on my grandfather's farm, when I was a kid; I think they were Northern Spys.

Does anyone know if Fuji apples are a common apple? I've never heard of them. I checked out the last website Alana posted and found a recipe for apple jelly. It suggested Fujis, among others, to use, so you wouldn't have to use any sugar, which sounds good to me! Just wondering where to find them.

Katie, great scenery shot!

Margo, hope the eyes don't give you any more trouble!

I would have to say that Honeycrisp and Gala are my favorites.
Shirley, we get Fuji apples in the grocery store down here. They are quite good, too.

Margo, hope the migraine associated auras don't return. The bad ones sure can be debilitating.

Rena', yes, I ate snake. Fried rattlesnake and it was pretty tasty. I like frog legs and gator, too. And love crawfish. There are lots of different species of crawfish, too. I wouldn't be surprised if some are tastier than others because of their habitat and life histories. BTW, do you have bingo yet? JUST KIDDING! I'm laughing with you, for sure, neighbor!!

Vina, I've almost gotten your box o' appley goodies complete.

Yay, tomorrow is Friday! I'm ready for some R&R!

Katie

 o
RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Rattlesnake jerky is a local favorite, but I don't eat jerky so I have not indulged. I ate it roasted over a campfire once years ago, but I was not impressed. Fried might be pretty tasty though.
Gala is my favorite modern apple, but Golden Delicious apples are what I remember from childhood at Uncle Joe's farm- sweet and delicious and warm from the sun.
Dianne, I have everything for your apple package and will be mailing it tomorrow.

It's Friday! Thank goodness. That calls for two bingo words.

I can't believe it's already here! The Apple Box came from Shirley! All kinds of fun things
Photobucket

book: Hanging Plants for Home, Terrace and Garden
apple cards she made herself, even made the envelopes
recipe cards-she made these, too and added a couple great recipes
puzzle-again, homemade 8x10 magnet puzzle of a photo she took. My girls and I are going to do it on the dry erase board tonight! My youngest girl is "hands on"! She'll have so much fun.
seeds: Ever-red sweet corn, super sweet tomato, yellow pear tomato, red banana pepper, snapdragons, agastache golden jubilee, rocket larkspur
AND MY FAVORITE!!! Cards she made herself. They are photos she took in her garden-flowers and butterflies. I love cards! I love your creativity. You can do so many things. I bet your creative juice splashes out everywhere and everyone loves it! Thank you! Thank you!

Heidi that is a beautiful package. Thanks for posting the photo. Shirley is a great partner too. How creative.
This morning we were surprised to see the size of the blossom on this tiny plant. It is Sacred Datura but they are also called "Thorn Apples" due to the shape of the seed pods. Not anybody's favorite apple I bet

Glad you liked the apple package, Heidi, the stickers gave me fits, but other than that, it was fun to put together! My Aunt gave me a book of her recipes when I got married and the Ritz Cracker Pie was one of them, that's how long I've had that recipe!

We're heading to a Hawkfest tomorrow; we went last year and it was really interesting. Got to talk to some falconers and learned a lot about their birds. Helpful Hint: Birds of prey are just as hard to get good shots of when they are sitting on someone's arm, as when they are flying or sitting in a tree! The Fest has "hawk related" things for kids to do as well, and craft booths, programs and good food!

Hope everyone has a good weekend!

Had a great day today, and it all started with my apple box from Heidi! As you can see from the picture, she really outdid herself! Talk about creativity - check out the apple cards done in autumn colors! Where did you find the stencils for these? 7 cards and each card was different, very pretty! Heidi also sent lots of plastic seed baggies, very much needed, and also seed envies for ROS and RTHS, complete with planting instructions on the back. Where did you find these? What a great idea! Heidi also send these seeds: Cosmos, Nasturciums, Gaillardia Fanfare, AND!!! seeds for Jonathan Apples - how great is that! And totally appropriate!

Heidi, I give my cards as gifts to family and friends, also some here on GW, but have never received homemade cards myself, thank you so much for your thoughtfulness!
(isn't it funny that we both sent cards?!)
Thank you for a GREAT apple package!
Shirley!

Hope your day was a good one, Keyla!

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Happy Birthday Keyla!!!

My favorite apples are Gala & Fuji. I think they are the sweetest. And they are in all the local groceries.

You guys are creative.

Jeanne - Whatever you put in I will be happy with! Thank you! I have all your box together to mail on Monday boxed and taped the DC is 0310 1230 0001 1960 7831.

Katie, I love frog legs as well. My favorite fish is Trout, yum! And I love stuffed crabs, or any dish with crab. The gator I ate was chewy, bleck! Never have wanted to try it again. But snake? Oh no no no can do. Snakes are the things my nightmares (literally) are made of! lol And now I am hungry for seafood after all this talk!

Have a terrific Sunday everyone!

Great boxes going around here.

I have four words for Bingo so far.

I have to work 12-4 today so hope to get outside and plant afterwards. I went to the greenhouse our store uses in the spring for our plants on the 7th. It was an open house and the owner of the store where I work didn't want to go but wanted to see what was new for next year. What fun my co worker and I had. They let us shop in two of the greenhouses. One had perennials for a dollar each so I bought 12 and the other had gallon size dianthus for $2 so I bought 2. Very fun. Now I need to get them planted.

Have a good Sunday everyone. Margo

Good Morning!
Thought I'd share a little of the Lord's creativity with you: this is a 4 month old, white morph Gyrfalcon, a bird that I never expected to see in my lifetime. I am a little surprised to see her used in falconry. I know that they have been sighted in the Rockies, but it is rare. The southernmost tip of their range is northern Canada. Hopefully the guy will take her back up there, when it is time to release her.
I'm not sure how I feel about this, but am very grateful to have seen her. Beautiful bird!
Have a great Sunday!
Shirley!

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Shirley and Heidi, lovely boxes of "apples". Very creative! I have received cards from Shirley and they are beautiful!! LOVE them!!

Alana, I love jerkey but have never heard of rattlesnake jerkey. I wonder if that is something you find in your Southern neck of the woods/Carolinas, Texas etc... We certainly have rattlesnakes around here....plenty of them are creeping around my yard and in the canyon behind our home....but I have never found rattlesnake jerkey for sale. I must investigate the best place to purchase some!

And Frog Legs are delicious!! Gator is not for sale here in CA but I did have it for lunch when I was in Louisiana a few years ago....loved it!

Happy Sunday!

Annie

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Happy Birthday Keyla. HOpe it is just the sort of day you would wish for.
Shirley, that is a beautiful bird and I too hope it gets to go back home.
About ready to mail the box but sure not feeling as creative as you gals. Really nice art work on the cards.

 o
RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Shirley, that is a beautiful bird indeed. Is it recuperating from an injury? It is a unique opportunity. I almost convinced my husband to attend the hawkfest, (which is where I assume you saw this) but we ended up staying at home where it was quite boring. LOL

Margo, yes, it was at the Hawkfest at Lake Erie Metro Park. And no, she is a perfectly healthy bird. At this point.

The lady and her family with all the hawks/owls/falcons was there again this year. They have added a Barbary Falcon, quite beautiful. I'm not sure if they hunt their birds or not. There were a lot more "solo" falconers there this year, including the guy with the Gyr. These men/women DO hunt their birds, which I would love to participate in!

I know that these birds are not being "held in captivity", i.e., they can fly away any time they want to, but something about the Gyrfalcon just isn't sitting right with me. I wish they would have left her free.

Happy Birthday Keyla!

Oooo, look at those lovely notecards Shirley & Heidi made. And how funny that you both ended up sending to each other. Those are lovely! Y'all are some crafty ladies. Inspiring, too. I might have to get more crafty...

Shirley - you captured a great photo of a stunning gyrfalcon! I have not been lucky enough to see a wild one yet, but one day... I am with you, too, in your sentiments about her being used in falconry. If healthy and capable of surviving on her own, I would much rather that she exist in the wild, without interactions with/influences by humans.

Vina - your package is all boxed up with label printed & attached. It will go out in the mail tomorrow.
DC# 9405503699300140460398 Yay!

Jeeze, what's up with the annoying ads that are popping up everytime you click to post a reply to a thread? Is anyone else experiencing this?

Katie

 o
RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Katie, I have noticed those pop ups too and wondered what was up. I usually have programs to stop that from happening. It is very annoying.

Shirley, you must remind me next year of this hawkfest as I would love to attend and find out more about falconry. I was not aware they use these birds for "hunting" and not sure what to think of it. Maybe I will google it.

Just came in from doing some serious clearing in parts of my gardens. So much more to do. It got way out of control during the hot weather and then my enthusiasm kind of peters out when August/September arrives.

Well, on to packing my lunch for tomorrow. Good night all. Margo

 o
RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

I have a very creative streak. I made up a template to make seed envelopes and it's easy to change and make some for other people and it's fun. I'm always explaining to people, "It's fun. I LIKE IT." Most people are looking at me like, 'Wouldn't you rather fish, camp, bowl, shop, do pilates, play bingo, watch softball games?' Nope! I use Microsoft Publisher so I can put words and boxes wherever I want. My father bought me a Cricut cutter so I enjoy using that, too--a computerized cutter. I couldn't believe Shirley and I sent each other cards! That was great.
What a gorgeous falcon. Looks so regal. Do hope they release it.
Happy Birthday!

Margo, we're going again next year, and I'll certainly remind you!
Falconry is really interesting. Strictly regulated, at least in Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. I've never read in the regulations that they have to release the birds, but I could be wrong. All of the falconers that I've talked to, do release them after two years. That's if they don't fly away first!
It has never bothered me to see the hawks or other falcons being kept.
I'm sorry this has gotten so far off topic!
I too worked outside in my gardens today, carefully ignoring the "entanglement!" I'll get it cleared, sooner or later. And I'm still collecting seeds!
Have a great week!
Shirley!

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Happy late birthday Keyla! Hope you had a great one :)

Gosh I feel so behind lol...just read thru and reread thru lol and gotta lot of catching up to do...rattlesnake jerky???...that's a new one even for me...had fried gator tail and loved it but it's gotta be cooked right...i'm a weird one tho...i'm not big on any seafood except for fish so no crawfish (altho hubby and youngest daughter and son gulp them down), no frog legs (those are for hubby and middle daughter), no oysters, no crab, no lobster (yes i'm a weirdo) hahaha...catfish is my favorite and then i like trout, bass, brim, and the typical southern river fish...will eat other fish like tuna, salmon, just about any fish but if there are catfish that's where i'll be :)

that falcon is beautiful!!...if i were a wizard lady i think i'd have a falcon instead of an owl lol...altho owls are awesome too...hhhmmm don't know what got me on that track other than we watch a lot of sci-fi and stuff and play online games where we are different imaginable characters as a hobby (the gardening kinda took over for us tho in the hobby area and haven't spent much time on gaming lately...at least gardening is productive haha)

Heidi, I think what you do is probably stressful but awesome! don't think i'd have the patience or brain power to do that kind of job

Margo...almost got your package together...will definitely get it out by the 20th!...sorry for taking so long on it...please forgive me and i'll try to make it worth the wait :)

 o
RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

I like frog legs to stay on the frog so I would not consider eating them. I know. I'm a little strange and a bundle of contradictions, but that's me. One time when I was sent to an East Coast office to do some work the local colleagues that knew my feelings about eating frogs took me to a restaurant one evening for dinner that they told me I just had to try. I did not notice the name of the place and if I had I might not have recognized that it was "Frog Legs" in French. It was not until I got the menu that I realized why everyone was laughing and I had to laugh, too.
There is a gas station I pass about once a month that usually has rattlesnake jerky next to the counter along with the usual beef jerky and other quick snack items. I will try to remember to pick up a package next time I go that way.
I'm with you on the seafood Dianne, I prefer freshwater fishes to most seafood.
I will be at home today, but we have a 100% chance of rain-much needed- so I won't complain.

Today's word(s) Northern Spy .

 o
RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

hahahaha Alana that is funny...reminds me of when i was stationed in germany in the army and the chow hall had catfish...i was excited til i picked up my fork and was about to take a bite and saw it was the eyeball...they left the head on it and fried it head and all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...i couldn't eat catfish for a while even tho i love it so much lol

I got my apple box today!!!!! Alana I love it :)))))...in the box were lillies (cultivar: Happy Apple), apple gourd seeds, and apple of peru (shoofly)...i had none of those seeds and i adore lillies and have wanted some shoofly but had forgot i wanted it lol...there was also a hummingbird feeder (I didn't have one at all and was planning on buying one when they went on sale after season was over)...so you saved me some money Alana...an apple scented candle (love candles) , apple tea, and an apple cup to drink it out of...thanks so much Alana for my box of goodies...I love it all :)

Margo...I got your box put together and will get it in the mail tomorrow or Wednesday...I know I'm cutting the deadline close...sorry it's taking so long for me to get with the program...

 o
RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Jeanne - I received your package today! And yours went out. Thank you so much, I love all of it. Great creativity!
My box from Jeanne had in it an apple pie, a container of dried apples, some hand-made plant tags in an apple cloth bag that she made, an apple card and some apple gourd seeds.
Great package, thank you again Jeanne! I love dried fruit!
I don't remember if I've eaten dried apples before. (I've not opened them yet though, not 'til I snap a pic. so I can post it here.) I love fresh fruit but am allergic to all fresh fruit, but not cooked or dried. I cook pancakes and my husband cooks fruit either apples or banana foster to go on top of them.

lol Alana

That was a beautiful falcon!

Hi Shirley!!

Hello to all my new found buddies!!!

Katie - Glad you're laughing with me neighbor! But you can laugh at me also, I laugh at myself all the time, I am a goof! lol Appreciated your "Can I call BINGO even though only five words were called?" ROFL I can't find that post but I know you wrote it somewhere. Alot of times I read the posts thru my e-mail with zero time to respond and then can't find them later to respond. So PLEEZ noone ever think that I have been offended because I'm silent! I do embarass myself (often) but then I get over everything relatively quickly! lol I can't stand facades, and if my friends like an image that I portray and it's not me then I'm not really liked right? Besides I can't help but be myself. When I die I want everyone that knew me to know that they really new me, the real me. Goofball and all! Like some people I know cheat any time they think thye can get away with it (adults)
if you didn't win on your own merits how can you have any real satisfaction? My brother is the #1 cheater I know! lol
I'll either stand on my own or fall on my own in life but it will be on my own. My own thoughts, my own words, my own deeds. Make it or break it baby!!! Woohoo Life is good! (couldn't leave on such a serious note) lol

Margo - One of the cats my son rescued Trixie had 4 kittens and one of them especially makes me think of you, it has an M on its head! A perfect letter M, I'm going to take a pic of her and show you, she is sooo cute!

Home again today-we've had a couple of inches of rain with more to come. Where was that in April-August?

Oh, Heidi! I had to go do a google search on what a "cricut" was. Holy cow, that looks like so much fun!! The sky is the limit with one of those things! I like to be crafty, too, but I don't always have the time (or space!) to do so. And I certainly have enough hobbies, too (too many, maybe?). But I, personally, would lump in 'fishing' at the top of the "I like it; IT'S FUN!" category.

Rena', glad you had a good, hearty laugh at my joke. I thought it was funny, too. LOL! I'm a super-goof, as well, but sometimes I worry that my goofing & teasing will offend someone, so I try to keep it at a minimum. (and no, I did not think your silence meant you were upset).

Dianne, no worries about being MIA. We all go through times of being super busy and can't respond right away. I do the same as you, re: reading the thread via email.

Alana, I love frogs, too - but still enjoy eating frog legs. But of all the hunting and fishing we do, I don't think I could bring myself to kill a bullfrog to eat the legs. Since I was a very little girl, I have always loved toads especially. I had a little teapot that I used to fill up with water, and pour into the toad holes where they lived so they would come out and I could play with them. They didn't seem to mind much, because they continued to stay and live there.

All the appley packages that are getting delivered sound wonderful!

It's raining here today too, Alana, kind of gloomy looking out there! The Karma Blue pansies are loving this cooler weather!

I grew Shoofly years ago, never knew it was called Apple of Peru! It's a pretty plant, and you can use the seed pods in dried arrangements. What a great box, Dianne!

Did I read that right, Rena', did Jeanne send you an apple pie? Jeanne is a VERY creative lady, but--I'm sure I read that wrong! Let us know, Rena'! Sounds like a really nice apple box, regardless!

It's interesting to see how everyone interprets the theme, isn't it? Getting lots of ideas!

Hi Beth, Hi Annie!
Have a great day, All!
Shirley!

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Shirley, did you get the thunderstorms too? We had them here and I really enjoyed it. We haven't had very many this year.

My kitty is going to her new home today. I am going to miss her. I knew I wouldn't keep her right from the start as we have just too many cats already and it isn't fair to her. I know my friend will take good care of her and I can see her on occasion. In the 10 days I have taken care of her, I have come to enjoy her company so it will be a sad parting :(

Rena, looking forward to seeing that picture. Glad I don't live close cause I just might feel compelled to give that one a good home here. I am such a sucker for a kitten/cat.

Everyone who posts here is so creative and into so many things. I always look forward to reading what you have been up to!
(Yes, I did send Rena' an apple pie - just a small one that came packed in its own little box. I thought for sure I would find apple related seeds in my stash, but not much luck - the only thing I came up with was Apple Gourds.)
We are having some rain, too, but once again it's needed so that's okay.

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Katie - How did you make your DC # up above blue and clickable?
That is really neat. Also people put other clickable links in their posts how do they do that?

Margo - I just found my camera 2 min. ago yay, now I can go take the 2 pics that I need to post.

Dianne - When I was young I wanted to join the army. And at 15
in high school I joined ROTC. When my husband found out my plans he quickly put the brakes on that. But if he hadn't my health would of. So it was for the best.

Hello xiangirl! (I'm being to lazy to find my notebook with your name, and saw your post up above but not your name.) But I wanted to say hi anyway!

Talk to y'all again in a bit.

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Katie I love how you used to play with frogs lol...I had a pet gopher (the turtle type) when i was little...he'd come out of the high clay side bank in the dirt road down from where we lived and i would literally sit on him ...i couldn't say i'd ride as he didn't move past a step or 2 at a time lol...but he didn't seem to mind it...he was huge...i was around 3/4 years old tho so maybe he wasn't as big as i thought he was back then lol

Margo I got your box put in the mail today...the tracking # is 0311 3260 0001 1292 8296...hope you like it...i had fun putting it together altho i wasn't as artistic and creative as some of the boxes already sent out...

Looks like it's gonna rain again today...it's rained steady the last 2 days and an afternoon shower wouldn't be bad right now...the timeliness of it is way off tho...and it should be cooling off more i think...but it'll get down to the 70's and then the next day be up in the high 80's low 90's...

hope all are having a good week, dianne

 o
RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

I had the "itch" to be in the dirt the last 2 days. I dug up an Autumn Joy Sedum that was taking over. I've been rearranging some plants--tall in the back, short in the front. I'm glad so many of you are getting rain. We're so dry. In fact, I think we're going to start measuring rain differently. We're going to institute a method of "by drops." Polka-dot is when the pavement has only dots of rain. The weatherman lied to us for a week and a half and all we got was Polka-Dot! ha

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

My box from Jeanne, thank you again Jeanne. :-)

I was shopping today when I thought Heidi xiangirl is Heidi!
Yay, I was so happy my memory finally pulled it up. I kept meaning to look in my notebook all day but got really busy.

I know I have dirt withdrawals, if too much time passes by without me playing in it.

O.K. Katie that last post of yours with the combined chatter about the frogs begs me to tell of this story.

When I moved to New Orleans (as a teenager) which by the way was also the 1st time that I had ever been their.
I noticed all of the erosion by the houses, I mean bad erosion. The city after all is below sea level. And I asked my husband what was causing the erosion. Low and behold if that man didn't spin me a tale about "tunnel frogs." I promise you he had me believing that for a long time. And don't you think for a second that he told me diferent, oh no. I found out different in school! So believe me your teasing can't be any worse than what I live with! lol He still brings that up, yep all the kids know all about it too. I promise I couldn't be prideful even if I tried with all my heart! lol Yep, I keep a pantry full of humble pie. I tried throwing them all away but they have a way of magically reappearing!

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Margo - Here is the kitty I named MiMi due to the M on her head. She is 4 weeks old, she has 3 siblings. I love her so much she is a very loveable kitten! But my husband is allergic to cats so we can't keep her. :-( My son put an ad in the paper for them. You are right it is so easy to become attached to them. My cousin rescued a cat that had kittens 5 weeks ago (6 of them) they are jet black with sky blue eyes. Gorgeous kittens, she was trying to give me one of hers. So many pets in need of homes.

Jeanne - Hopefully your package will arrive tomorrow. And I didn't even spill the beans on its contents! I must be turning over a new leaf! lol

'til tomorrow...

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

Man, I would grab that little darling up in a heartbeat, especially with the M on her head. I don't have one that color either. LOL

My little kitten is adapting well at her new home but I sure do miss her. My cat Tenny sure doesn't. She has been all cuddly since kitten left. She kept her distance although they played a little on occasion but Tenny was not a fan of little one.

I now have 7 Bingo words. Margo

What is going on with the weather? It got down to 40 last night, had to get up and turn on the heat-isn't it kind of early for those temps?

And we are going to get Indian Summer, right?

Margo, yes, we had the thunderstorms all night!

Rena', beautiful little cat! Both Vinnie and Willie have the M on their foreheads. Looks like a great box, too!

I have 6 bingo words!

Alana, my biggest apologies. I got your package mailed on Saturday but apparently, they do not check the package kiosk until Monday because that is when they scanned the package. I am extremely upset about this as your plants may not have made it. Please let me know and I will resend. I had thought they had one pick up on Sunday otherwise I would have waited to dig up the plants until Monday.

I see it is going to be delivered today so please let me know. I am sorry again.

RE: new: fotess september, johnny appleseed

I will try to post a photo of my super duper apple box from Margo by the weekend. In the meantime, here is what was in it:
-An apple themed tea towel and oven mitt-very pretty and the timing is great-mine are looking a little sad.
-8 tiny little containers that I can use for seeds, of course
-pineapple mint. I did not have it and I love it!
-Rose Campion Again, I did not have the magenta version
-to go with the two plants are two spoons that she has beaten flat and then hammered the plant names into. These are fantastic! My chickens can't pull them out and carry them off and they won't fade in the sun. I love these even though they are more proof that I am sadly behind the creative curve.
-large Apple Gourd Seeds
-a pocket sized apple fragranced anti bacterial hand gel
-her left over or slightly used item was a package of plastic clamps to secure plant stems to their supports. She had purchased too many. Great item!
Thank you very much Margo. I enjoyed every bit of it!

Annie these seeds are very welcome as this spring I took all my seed stash to my daughter's to help her start a first garden. When I came home I left the unplanted ones there for her to do as a fall garden and for winter sowing.
Annie I thank you . This was a super swap. Love the theme and the goodies you sent.

Rena I would have believed the tunnel frogs too hahahaha even tho I'm from the south area and know the history of LA flooding and being under sea level...so don't feel too bad ;)

MiMi is adorable...it's one of those things that animal lovers just want to reach out and hold til it usually somehow finds its way home with you...

Everyone is getting such awesome apple boxes...we got some creative and generous folks here on this swap!

A big thank you to Rena' - my package arrived today. Rena', you were far too generous, but I accept your kindness and thank you for it.
Rena' set a soap (or lotion) dispenser in an apple shape, an apple sugar bowl and cream pitcher, an apple picture frame, an apple wooden ornament, a packet of seeds, and 3 clay worms that are water sensors. I hope I got it all listed. It was quite a boxful!
Anyway, I took a picture so you can see. I love apples so this swap was lots of fun!
