NEW: Seed Purge 2014

bumblebee23

Hi Everyone! I posted this on Dave's Garden this morning under my screen name absinthe27, but thought I would post it here also if anyone is interested.

legallyheidi is not hosting her annual seed purge this year, and gave me her blessing to go ahead and host one. I had so much fun last year being involved in Heidi's, and am very excited for this year! Her setup seemed to work really well, so I'm going to follow a lot of the same rules and guidelines.

This swap is currently open to the US and Canada. If anyone international is interested, please message me and I'll look into postage pricing and details.

DATES AND DEADLINES

Sign up here and send seed packages by October 18th - I will message you my address.
Return seed packages will be sent out by December 1st.

GUIDELINES

1. Sign up here and post your HAVE and WANT list.

2. Get your seeds ready. For every pack of seeds you send you will receive one pack back, up to a maximum of 100 packs. Each should be properly labeled with the type of plant and name/cultivar. Feel free to include extra information regarding growing conditions and requirements if you'd like.

If possible, please limit the number of packs to 5 or less per cultivar - 5 packs each of 10 different types of beans is fine, but sending in 50 packs of all Kentucky Wonder Pole Beans is a bit excessive. If you have more than 5 of a specific cultivar and still want to get rid of them, you can include them and mark them as EXTRA, and they'll be disbursed as bonus packs on top of everyone's regular swap amounts.

Seeds should be from known varieties/cultivars. Please no hybrids or unknowns unless they are EXTRA.

All types of seeds are accepted - vegetables, herbs, annuals, perennials, trees...etc. Commercial and self-saved seed are both fine. Commercial seed can be left in its original packaging or split up into separate packs - just note that it is commercial if you repackage it. Seed should be from 2012 or newer - older seed can be sent in as EXTRA if you'd like.

Try to include a decent amount of seed in each pack. Examples:
TINY SEEDS (POPPIES, BASIL, PORTULACA): 1/4 tsp
SMALL FLOWER SEEDS (CALENDULA, BACHELOR BUTTONS): 1/2 tsp
LARGE FLOWER SEEDS (4 O'CLOCKS, NASTURTIUM, THUNBERGIA): 10 seeds
SMALL VEGETABLE SEEDS (TOMATO, PEPPER, EGGPLANT): 20 seeds
LARGE VEGETABLE SEEDS (SQUASH, BEANS, CORN): 10 seeds

3. Mail me your seed packs and info. Send the following in a bubble wrap envelope: the seed packs you are contributing, an address label with your name and address on it, 5 US stamps (Canadians can send monetary funds), your GardenWeb screen name, your wish list, and a list of seeds you do not want (if any). If you have promised certain seeds to someone on here, please clearly label who they should go to and separate them from the general swap packs.

Let me know if you have any questions. I will be adding my have and want list soon and will be adding to it as I save more seed from the garden. Can't wait to see what everyone has!

    @bluee19

ok, i will try to send some of that. i say i will include like less than half of those, mostly because my package is packed up now, and the ones you want are really bulky. ! and thats thats really kind of a lot you are asking for.

maybe when the hostess goes through my stuff she can pack it up for you, but i havent included any grapes in there. i am ready to send mine out and i am over 100 packs, and lots of extra trades. i am ready to just send it out now.

i am sorry but theres nothing i can use from your seed list

Marked side trades make things easier, but I will definitely be looking through the posts for requested items and wishlist items to set aside for each person before I start divvying up the non-requested items. I have a spreadsheet started, so if anyone is requesting things after they've been packed up or sent in I will still try to catch them and add them to that - no worries.

@garrett i will include the summer savory, chamomile and some rugosa rose seeds, i have a white one that produces lovely hips, the size of a small apple.
i am interested in sweet banana peppers, marconi red peppers, and maybe some other kind of pepper as well. ?

otherwise i want to finish packing this up and ship it off...

Garret, I will set aside some Cinnamon Basil, Dame's Rocket, Datura inoxia, and Pumpkin On a Stick for you. I gave my brother-in-law a Pumpkin On a Stick plant, and he wintered it over as a house plant last year. I think he still has it.

Erica, Thanks so much for checking that out for me. I'm sure I'll come across it sooner or later. I have got to get it now - Ha Ha!

Leila, I did see your last edit and appreciate the extra information. I'm going to mark those in my want list as well. If I do run across these I'll try to let you know about it too. And Thank You for the seeds. I checked out the Rugosa Rose - images... Hee-hee, I never looked at a Rose and thought, FOOD!!! I wonder what my neighbors would think if they saw me eating Rose buds? Supremo Creepy Guy, lol. I will also look into the Hibiscus plant. I think I need some sleep, I've pictured myself gnawing on the thick stems! Anyone knowing I've got five kids might understand?

Hey all, I'm loving it and coming on here has been making my day brighter. Thank you! Leila, I'll put you down for the Sweet Banana, Marconi Red and a side of "Cherry Hot". It's sweet and hot. I got enough for one last packet of that one. I wish I had more of it to put up on the list. Edit to add... Let me know if you want the Cherry Hot or another. I'd like to send something you want - you pick. Thank you!

    Cnading, looks great! Thanks...

Midwestfarmwife, Thank you! That "Pumpkin On a Stick" is gonna be fun!

This probably will not be the last time I say this... I want to send a big Thank You to Bumblebee23 for hosting this. I'm trying to keep up with trades, side trades, etc of my own. I can't imagine how "Stir Crazy" it would make me to organize through approximately 1,700 + packets of seeds. Let alone everyone's trade requests. That number will most likely grow too. Thanks B!

    Hi leilahamaya,
I will put you down for some borage and marshmallow. If you could put me down for some chicory and calendula, that'd be awesome!
    Garretds7,
I can put you down for some borage, or add it to the trade we're working on now! And I would love some of those carrot seeds.

Crazyfarmgirl14, For a minute there I thought I had yours packed up. But we didn't close on it yet. So yeah, we can add that to the trade we're working on.

Leila, that's okay. I know, some are expensive. I didn't know anything associated with what they cost or how big those seeds are. I bought Artichoke seeds last year and got four seeds. Three germinated, two were nice and healthy and the other is purty small. I think it'll be next year when I get something off of them. When I move, I'll have to dig them up and take with. And yeap, I'm gonna let some go to seed.

    Leila,
I'll put some on the side for ya. They're the Dark Purple ones. If you haven't sealed up your package can you add a few "Royal Ann" heirloom cherry tree seeds? I'm curious if this one can be grown in a large pot to train?

Garret - I've got a spreadsheet going for now and am feeling pretty good about everything, but I've only received about 250 seeds so far. We'll see what happens when the 1700+ seeds all show up and I have seeds stuffed all over my house while I organize them! I might go a bit crazy for awhile!

Welcome zackey and crazyfarmgirl14! I've added you both and sent you my address.

crazyfarmgirl14 - I've set those seeds aside for you. I just picked my Musquee de Provence pumpkins the other day and they're my new favorites. If you still have some I would love to try Orangeglo Watermelon. I was eyeing them up in the Baker Creek catalog earlier this year!

Bumblebee23, I'm sure when the time draws closer to the date you'll be getting bunches of seeds in the mail. I will get mine up to the 100. I like the variety this puts out for everyone. My Mom has asked me to look out for Turnips. And I see you've got 'Purple Top White Globe'. Would you be able to set one aside for me? I feel like I may be asking too much. But it's there, lol. And Onion 'Yellow of Parma'.

I've finally taken pictures of the Tobacco 'Little Dutch' and the Hibiscus growing out front. From what I see so far, it looks to be a Rose of Sharon. The color is like a purplish blue. ...And uh, I kinda ate that poor plant you see in the picture. Well, ate a couple and then soaked it in some hot water - then filled it with ice-cold water. It was actually pretty darn good. Tasted like a cucumber and the feel was like that of one also (after soaking). So it's in my belly now... sorry.

I also have noticed, that everyday hummingbirds have been all over the 'Little Dutch'. However, I couldn't get a picture with the hummingbirds.

I'm putting a picture up in a few minutes...

When I saw the hummingbirds after these flowers. They went to each and every one of them. Yeah, I wish I had my camera for it. Those are big seed buds. Each one contains an enormous amount of tiny black seeds. I've heard that a cluster like the one you see has about 250.000 seeds, lol. I'm not certain for sure of that, but I do know the smallest buds of a 'Habano 2000' I have, three of them filled a small ziploc halfway. This is the first I've grown tobacco plants and have found they are very easy to grow. This one, I believe is my favorite.

I'm just thinking ahead when I say this. This is the first I've grown these guys. I'd put them in a decent sized pot, rather in an area where your planning to or planting vegetables. I say this because of the tobacco virus. I'm no expert, but just want to make sure to mention that. I don't know much about it to be honest. For me... I really would like to plant these in a cluster next to each other. They look really cool grouped. But now that I'm planning for more garden and herbs, etc. I got to thinking about it. Just want to be on the side of caution. I know how hard it is to work in the garden and I don't want to be the cause of someones problem. That would really bother me. Before hand, I honestly didn't think about that. So do some research on it.

Erica, Thank you for the comment. They are really cool looking. I've heard some people like to grow the tall ones. A few that I have will grow to 8 foot tall. And others with thick 30" long and 16" wide leaves.

Ahh, found the info I have for this one:
    Little Dutch
An heirloom variety dating back to the 1880's. It is sweet aromatic tobacco used in pipe blends and as a cigar filler.
It grows to around 3' in height and has narrow leaves growing up to 30" long. The long narrow leaves also make an excellent cigar wrapper. It matures in only 45 days and is a good choice for container growing.

Hibiscus 'Rose of Sharon'? - Flower Bud and Leaf
(Finally, for those of you that can tell me for certain whether this is what I labeled it as) The bush has grown to be about 7' - 8' tall. You can't see much of it in this photo, but it has a bluish tint to it.
Yep, I ate it and I drank it up, lol. Twas actually purty good, lol.

Garret - That's definitely some sort of hibiscus. I can't verify rather or not it's Rose of Sharon though. I don't have enough familiarity with the species. That one is a beauty though. You should post that pic on the Name That Plant forum. That's a great resource - many very knowledgeable people there.
