NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Hi Everyone! I posted this on Dave's Garden this morning under my screen name absinthe27, but thought I would post it here also if anyone is interested.

legallyheidi is not hosting her annual seed purge this year, and gave me her blessing to go ahead and host one. I had so much fun last year being involved in Heidi's, and am very excited for this year! Her setup seemed to work really well, so I'm going to follow a lot of the same rules and guidelines.

This swap is currently open to the US and Canada. If anyone international is interested, please message me and I'll look into postage pricing and details.

DATES AND DEADLINES

Sign up here and send seed packages by October 18th - I will message you my address.
Return seed packages will be sent out by December 1st.

GUIDELINES

1. Sign up here and post your HAVE and WANT list.

2. Get your seeds ready. For every pack of seeds you send you will receive one pack back, up to a maximum of 100 packs. Each should be properly labeled with the type of plant and name/cultivar. Feel free to include extra information regarding growing conditions and requirements if you'd like.

If possible, please limit the number of packs to 5 or less per cultivar - 5 packs each of 10 different types of beans is fine, but sending in 50 packs of all Kentucky Wonder Pole Beans is a bit excessive. If you have more than 5 of a specific cultivar and still want to get rid of them, you can include them and mark them as EXTRA, and they'll be disbursed as bonus packs on top of everyone's regular swap amounts.

Seeds should be from known varieties/cultivars. Please no hybrids or unknowns unless they are EXTRA.

All types of seeds are accepted - vegetables, herbs, annuals, perennials, trees...etc. Commercial and self-saved seed are both fine. Commercial seed can be left in its original packaging or split up into separate packs - just note that it is commercial if you repackage it. Seed should be from 2012 or newer - older seed can be sent in as EXTRA if you'd like.

Try to include a decent amount of seed in each pack. Examples:
TINY SEEDS (POPPIES, BASIL, PORTULACA): 1/4 tsp
SMALL FLOWER SEEDS (CALENDULA, BACHELOR BUTTONS): 1/2 tsp
LARGE FLOWER SEEDS (4 O'CLOCKS, NASTURTIUM, THUNBERGIA): 10 seeds
SMALL VEGETABLE SEEDS (TOMATO, PEPPER, EGGPLANT): 20 seeds
LARGE VEGETABLE SEEDS (SQUASH, BEANS, CORN): 10 seeds

3. Mail me your seed packs and info. Send the following in a bubble wrap envelope: the seed packs you are contributing, an address label with your name and address on it, 5 US stamps (Canadians can send monetary funds), your GardenWeb screen name, your wish list, and a list of seeds you do not want (if any). If you have promised certain seeds to someone on here, please clearly label who they should go to and separate them from the general swap packs.

Let me know if you have any questions. I will be adding my have and want list soon and will be adding to it as I save more seed from the garden. Can't wait to see what everyone has!

RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Welcome sinbadsmom and leilahamaya!

We are up to 13 swappers already which is awesome! I really need to sit down and add the rest of my seeds and then look through everyone's have lists. I added four extra raised gardens last year and I think I'm going to run out of room again...I don't think I'm going to have any lawn left if I keep this up!

This post was edited by bumblebee23 on Thu, Sep 4, 14 at 13:23

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

ok i will add some olympia spinach, snowberry, indian rhubarb (for midwestfarmwife) and thimbleberry (for ericabraun), and would love some canna and any kind of tomatillo, physalis.

warning about the berries, maybe i just havent figured out the trick but i keep trying to germinate the berries and i have a really hard time, and i am sure the seed was good (really ripe, fresh enough, etc).

i have gotten the strawberries to germinate, the trick with them is to expose them to light and surface sow, but i havent figured out how to germinate raspberries or thimbleberry. i keep trying though, but just thought i would put that out there. if someone wants to experiment i have lots of seed so i will send a fat packet. i have wondered if maybe they need some fermentation or ???!?? idk...something to get them to start. i have several really good raspberries, especially the main kind we have huge areas with them, they are great and really big...so i would love to figure it out.

/end off topicness

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

leilahamaya,

Thanks so much for the Thimbleberry. Have you tried to cold stratify them before planting? It might be the trick! "
"Sow stored seed as early as possible in the year in a cold frame and stratify for a month at 3°c if sowing later than February." I put you down on my list for Grande Rio Verde Tomatillo.

Bumblebee,

Lawns are overrated! I took mine out at the beginning of the year for a raised bed garden and I couldn't be happier!

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

agreed FOOD NOT LAWNS =)

ah well my lawns are not what many people would like though
(i really dont understand why?), all clovers, chicory, sorrel, mallows, wild violets, camomile and pineapple weed, small leaf mint, lemon balm, etc etc etc ! and i love it that way, lots of edible yarden. now if only i could get rid of the pesky grass that grows like a weed in my food =) yarden =)

anywho i have tried cold stratifying them many times. i agree thats part of it. my problem might be not watering enough, perhaps. i am not always at attentive to watering a lot.

blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, thimbleberry, and all the other cool berries i have tried to start from seed are the most difficult i have ever tried, but i suppose i am ok with the challenge. with blueberries i got a few, and that was by fermenting the seed, so i am starting to wonder if this is part of the trick with berries.
it makes sense because they cling to a bit of the fruit, and in nature i would think the fruit ferments a bit to wear down the seed coat. apparently being passed through the digestive system in an animal works but thats not something i will do! they have some kind of heavy seed coat, as small as they are, that needs to be broken down before they germinate. maybe i will try orange juice.

anywho it's a challenging thing to start berries from seed, but i do enjoy trying to..... if someone is up for the challenge i have some really excellent raspberries that produce tons of excellent berries.

------>leilahamaya,

Wow. What an amazing amount of space you have. I loved the pics of your garden/yarden. I am jealous!

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

leilahamaya,

Thanks so much for the purslane and lamb's quarters. Take a look at my trade list and see if I have anything on there you'd like. I have a lot of stuff there, that I haven't put up for trade here. Let me know if you see anything you like!

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

ok. i will have to dry them, but i let one area go to all purslane, lambs quarters and pigweed, three of our most common volunteers here and the seed looks almost ready. i have some lambs quarters from earlier too already dried.

i looked at your list and i would love some evening primrose and also salvia, any. i do love pineapple sage =) i had huge patches of it but lost them last winter =(

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

leilahamaya,

I put aside tall evening primrose, chiapas sage, scarlet sage, and pineapple sage for you, in addition to the Rio Grande Verde Tomatillo from earlier.

Bumblebee,

I have a question. I have a couple side trades going with people. How do you want to deal with that? Pack all the seeds separately with their name, label it "bonus," and not count it towards the 100 pack limit? Pack the seeds separately, label it with their name and the number of packs inside, so that that number counts towards our 100? I'm assuming that you don't want seeds promised to people free-floating with the general seeds, necessitating that you do 100% of the sorting based on a list. Other possibilities exist! Let me know.

RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Welcome cnading and tamela_star! I just sent you my mailing address, so you should see that coming by email.

EricaBraun - packing the seeds separately and labeling who they are for would definitely be helpful, but I'll go through and try to catch any that are missed or that are spoken for after the packs are mailed in. If you have a lot of side trades, you don't have to count them towards your 100 maximum packs if you don't want to. You can send 100 packs in addition to your side trades.

Already received seed packages in the mail today from two swappers!

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Bumblebee,

Excellent! That sounds fantastic! Thanks so much for the clarification.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

midwestfarmwife - I just added Benary's Giant Mix Zinnias to my have list, and I noticed it is in your wish list. I'll set one aside for you.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Bumblebee,

Can I get one of your Onion 'Yellow of Parma'? Please take a look at my trade list and let me know if there is anything on there that you would like. You already have me down for 2 things, so if you see multiples from my list, let me know. (There is stuff available there, that I don't have listed for the swap).

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Thanks Bumblebee! I have my 100 packs ready + several side trades but want to wait to see if anyone else signs up for additional Wants & Haves. Do you have a closed date in mind? I know that lots of seeds haven't matured yet here in zone 5.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Mary,

I just asked her essentially the same thing via email the other day. Here's her answer:

"October 18th is the deadline to mail seeds in. Like you mentioned, more seed is available into the fall, so that's why I delayed the deadline into October."

Hope that helps!

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

I will definitely have milkweed and day lilies in the fall. Harvested more stuff today. I have dill (1 trade) and basil (several trades) I also have datura moon flowers (white). Lots of blue morning glories and about to collect seeds from my black petunias but they might not be true to the parent's color.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Hi Erica - I'll set aside the onion seeds for you. I'm just on a break at work, but I will definitely check out your trade list when I get home tonight! Thanks!

And yes, if you have your seed packets ready, feel free to send them in now, otherwise there is no rush. Just make sure they're sent out by October 18th. As Erica posted, I pushed it back since I know a lot of us harvest seed well into the fall.

 o

RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

@erica braun i checked on the purslane and lamb's quarters today and harvested a good amount of seed. now i am glad i let that go to seed, i was thinking about it a while back, and decided not to weed them out and let them finish their cycle. it struck me to mention our local purslane is the kind with smaller leaves. maybe i will look up an exact id, it is a volunteer all over the garden.

gonna be waiting till everything dries to send mine off, but i started getting it ready.

@ anyone, i would love some daylilies =)
i am ok with random crosses, all i have are pretty boring types, like orange and yellow.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

So appearently I did not get my updated have list saved earlier. It is now updated again. Midwestfarmwifem, I have everytihing you would like still except the sumter cuke, If you want take another look at my list there is much more on it now. I would love some of your cinnamon basil, and maybe some of your blueberry tomato, juan flamme tomato, bat wing pumpkin, sugar pie pumpkin, cherokee wax beans, lambs ear, and purple iron weed if possible?

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

cnading, I will set those seeds aside for you and check to see if I still have Cherokee Wax Beans. I have other varieties of wax beans if those are not available. I am also interested in trying your Cauliflower Chef's Blend.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

cnading - I'd love to get some of your Jigsaw Pepper and Black Hungarian Pepper seeds. Please take a look at what I have. I'd be happy to set a couple things aside for you, as well.

leilahamaya - Sounds great! I'm glad you let them go to seed and am thankful that you collected some for me. If you have any other medicinal "weeds" let me know!

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

EricaBraun, I will set those aside for you and I would be interested in some lovage and tommy toe tomato.

Midwestfarmwife, I will add the cauliflower to your stuff and if you dont have the Cherokee wax let me know I would be interested in trying something else.

I will most likely be adding more tomorrow since we are supposed to have rain all day I will be pulling anything ready to go out of the garden tonight, I know I will have black beauty eggplant and serrano peppers I know there are more but thats all I can think of at the moment.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

cnading - Thanks so much! I got you down for Lovage and Tommy Toe Tomatoes.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

cnading, I have Cherokee Wax bean, but only a small amount so can include some Pencil Pod Wax beans too if you like.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Midwestfarmwife, I would be happy with whatever you send me either a few of both or whatever you would like to send of one variety. I grow not only for my family but a large non profit addiction recovery center that runs on donations only so I am greatful for anything I can find to trade for that adds a little more variety into their meals.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

^^^^
good for you! i am all about the community gardens, of any kind and that sounds like a good one. working with the land is very healing!

@erica braun, you can probably guess i also love edible/medicinal "weeds" so called...volunteers is a better name for them. =) i do think i have a lot of that in my have list, but theres some stuff i dont collect or list cause few people share my love of the weedy ones...so if theres specific stuff you are looking for i can tell you if i have it or can get it. i like to forage for volunteers too

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Erica - I finally had a chance to look through your trade list. If you have them available I would love Buckskin Pumpkin, Hibiscus/Rose Mallow, and White Soul Apline Strawberry seeds. Also, I noticed on your trades wish list you have Crapaudine Beet and Jewels of Opar listed. I for sure have the beet seeds, and I believe I have the Jewels of Opar also, but I have to double check. I can put both aside for you if you still want those.

cnading - if still available, I would love Tomatillo 'Purple Coban', Squash 'Boston Marrow', and Squash 'Hubbard'. Thanks!

sinbadsmom - I will set aside the painted daisy and squash seeds.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

cnading - What a generous heart you have for volunteering to help people at a recovery center!

Leila - I consider them herbs! I'm not really sure which most people label as weeds, but I'd love if you took a look over my want list. I have a whole section of medicinal herbs I'm looking for.

Bumblebee - I set aside the Buckskin Pumpkin, Rose Mallow, and Soul Alpine Strawberry. I'd love some of your Crapaudine Beets and Jewels of Opar if you have them. Also, if you see anything else on my list that you'd like, please let me know.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

erica i looked over your list once again and i am going to send you some viola as well. i have the common heart's ease, and some others that are basically "black jack" only they have been mellowed out a bit probably crossing and hybridizing with the common viola heart's ease. a few years ago i had a lot of viola heart's ease and some black jack, now after self seeding i have both but also some shades of deep purple and in between, so i will send you a packet of those, should have some variation in between.

also i am going to send you a bit of wild strawberry, this is the kind thats wild all around everywhere, our lawn is full of them. it is named "woodland" technically, though theres a lot of variation regionally....but its basically the same as the "red wonder" - a small very flavorful red strawberry. well i am assuming you are interested in both of these, as this is from your current wish list.if there is another wild ish feral weedy type plant you are really looking for, let me know as i might have it or have access to it. i was thinking possibly i might send you some pineapple weed, which is wild chammomile.

anywho i would also love some white soul alpine strawberry =)

if anyone else has any requests from my have list just let me know and i will include them. i busted a move on this and besides the stuff i have drying i almost have it packed it up.

Here is a link that might be useful: click here for my trade list

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Leila - I'd love some of your violas/heart's ease, as well as the wild strawberry and pineapple weed. I'm setting aside some of the white soul alpine strawberry for you.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

I'm thinking about joining in. Sounds like everyone is having fun. And that's what it's all about! I'd like to try to get a 100 up here too. But I'm not completely sure I'll have that. So I may make a run for some packets at Lowes. I think tomorrow I'll be able to set aside some time to get a list together.
Cnading, I like your hot pepper list you have on your exchange page. I have some super hots, but I'm unsure whether they'll germinate for me. There are a few I couldn't find info on... Maybe you may know something about them? One being a Hot Dalmatian Pepper. I just find images of dogs and One creepy guy in a dalmatian suit, lol.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Hey Garret!

You should definitely join in. This will be a great chance for you to get some new variety for your family. Oh, and btw, I got a good chuckle out of your "one creepy guy in a dalmatian suit."

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Welcome Garret! I am going to have well over 100 packs of seeds, so even if you don't hit 100, you should still be receiving more than what you send in.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Garret - If you see any peppers you want to try let me know and ill send them in with the swap. I have never heard of Dalmatian peppers before and couldn't find anything on them though I did find the creepy guy in a dalmatian suit. :)

Bumblebee - I just looked over your list and if you still have
bells of ireland and ananas noir tomato not spoken for can ya put my name on them?

Also if anyone has any my mother has asked me to see if I can find some hollyhocks and columbine of any color for her as well as goblin egg gourds and cone flowers other than the common purple echanecia

This post was edited by cnading on Wed, Sep 10, 14 at 8:47

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

cnading, if you would like double pink Hollyhock and Pow Wow Wild Berry Coneflower, I have some. Pow Wow Wild Berry is a brighter pink than Eastern Purple Coneflower, although my patch of Eastern Purple Coneflower seemed unusually bright pink this summer. Maybe somehow they could have crossed with the Pow Wow Wild Berry planted on the other side of the house?

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Garret, would you like some fresh Cinnamon Basil seeds for your Red Calabash tomato seeds?

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Midwestfarmwife - those sound great!

Garret - I would love to try your Ugly Ripe and Jelly Bean Tomatoes if you have some still

I also have seeds for:
Serrano Peppers
Lemon Cucumber
Black Beauty Eggplant
Carnival Popcorn
Purple cherokee tomatoes
sugar baby watermelon

If anyonee is interested I also have seeds that I have saved out of hybrid varieties:
Bush Champion Tomato
better boy tomato
black velvet tomato
piccolo squash

RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

cnading
i am including some hollyhocks in my package, i could put a mixed color hollyhocks (or besides mixed colors i have red, "dark night", pink and a few others) in a separate bag for you.

i also have some columbines, but truth be told i have completely forgotten what color they are! well they grow in a wildflower like bed, i dont pay much attention to it and just throw seeds around in there, anywho i am seeming to think they are a deep red. i am really bad with labelling things!

i would like some cherokee purple tomato.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

ooo and you have the notorious peter pepper! i have always wanted to grow some of those =)

i feel like there could be some joke here with creeper in dalmation suit with his peter pepper
too =) but i cant quite put my finger on it =)

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Leila - I can put both cherokee and the peter pepper aside for you and i would love some of both flower seeds

Oh my, that would be a wonderful joke!

RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

I'm in!!! Didn't realize just how many I could get together. I will update my list as I would like to get it to the 100 mark. And I do believe I'll be throwing in some extra's.

Some of these I know I'll have enough to put in for what I mark them down for. They're not ready just yet. These will have "NR" next to them. I'm glad to see the date to have the seeds in is further out.

I'd like to put some pictures in my profile on some of these. There is a bush in our front yard that I'm collecting seed from. I don't know the name of it - maybe someone can help me there? I saw one the other day a few streets down which is probably a year old and it had one big flower that stood out. If I had a camera, I would have stopped for a picture (and I might have earned the title of "creepy guy" in my neighborhood - Ha!). It has the same purple color of the flower on the background page here. Large seed pods too.

I know, I've got mainly Peppers and Tomato's. I hope to add a bit of diversity to this list later.

Here's what I've gotten so far:
(I plan to add more too)

Grapes - Georgia Muscadine Vine (10) 5 packs
Pepper - Bolivian Rainbow Chili Hot (20) 5 packs
Pepper - Long Red Cayenne (20) 5 packs
Pepper - Jalapeno Early (20) 5 packs
Pepper - Habanero - Orange (20) 5 packs NR
Pepper - Serrano (20) 5 packs NR
Pepper - Sweet Banana (20) 5 packs NR
Pepper - Marconi Red (20) ? packs NR
Squash - Butternut (10) 5 packs
Tobacco - Little Dutch (Nicotiana tabacum L. Solanaceae)
(Makes for a nice potting plant that grows up to 3') 5 packs
Tomato - San Marzano (20) 5 packs
Tomato - Red Calabash (20) 5 packs
Tomato - Ugly Ripe (20) 5 packs
Tomato - Beefsteak (20) 5 packs
Tomato - Jelly Bean (20) 5 packs
Tomato - Brandywine (20) 5 packs
Carrots - Short 'n Sweet (40+) 5 packs

Side (1 each):
Brussels Sprouts 'Catskill' (20) (Bumblebee23)
Eggplant 'Early Long Purple' (20+) (Bumblebee23)
Pepper - Bolivian Rainbow Chili (20+) (Bumblebee23)
Grapes - Georgia Muscadine Vine (10+) (Leilahamaya)
Pepper - Cherry Hot (20) (Leilahamaya)
Pepper - Marconi Red (20+) (Leilahamaya)
Pepper - Sweet Banana (20+) (Leilahamaya)
Tobacco - Little Dutch (+) (EricaBraun)
Tomato - San Marzano (20+) (EricaBraun)
Tomato - Red Calabash (20+) (Midwestfarmwife)
Tomato - Jelly Bean (20+) (Cnading)
Tomato - Ugly Ripe (20+) (Cnading)
Tomato - Red Calabash (20+) (Billingsdj)
Tomato - Ugly Ripe (20+) (Billingsdj)
Tomato - Jelly Bean (20+) (Billingsdj)

I'm hoping to add some flowers in here too. They would be Commercial packs. I'll look to see if I can find some "Wants" on your list too ; )

I don't have much in herbs. The ones I grew this year didn't work out too well. I knew I shouldn't have used that dirt! One of them "coulda shoulda woulda" moments. And I "shouldn've".

Check out my exchange page for my "want list". Kinda feels like a Christmas list - Lol!

RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Oh No... LOL!!!
You have me ROFLing... HA HAA!!!

I did not see those post as I was putting my list together. Lol.
My wife has been wanting me to find the Peter pepper. She wants to put one in a topsy turvy near the front door. I have two boys at the ages of 16 and 17. They don't like the idea - ha - haa! Maybe that will deter them from inviting their buddies over?

I am in a trade for the "Yellow Peter Pepper". I'm now looking for any of the other colors. Yeah, there's much joking going on around here about it. My 90 year old Grandmother may be getting a plant too. She's one funny lady and I know she'll get a kick out of it!

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

garret- at the risk of being totally and completely wrong, i will suggest it might be a hibiscus. a lot of people like these and plant these for landscaping bushes, and the flowers are very noticeable and large. attached some images of hibiscus

Here is a link that might be useful: hibiscus flowers

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Garret - I know we just did a trade, but I'd like to get some of your Tobacco - Little Dutch and San Marzano Tomatoes. Feel free to take another look at my trade list. There might still be a couple things left that you're interested in.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Leila - I think that's it. I hope to get a picture today on those. It's loaded with pods. And a very attractive bush too. If I can properly get it identified, I'm gonna put it in the list.

Boy O' Boy, I wasn't ever good as a child trying to decide what candy I wanted in the candy isle. Looking through all these seeds is really hard. I am looking at everyone's offers and it might take me a minute.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Midwestfarmwife:
"Garret, would you like some fresh Cinnamon Basil seeds for your Red Calabash tomato seeds?"

*Yep, I certainly would like to have the Cinnamon Basil. I'm putting you in for it.

Cnading:
"Garret - I would love to try your Ugly Ripe and Jelly Bean Tomatoes if you have some still"

*I'm putting you in for both. I'd love to have the Lemon Cucumber and Purple Cherokee Tomato...

"Garret - If you see any peppers you want to try let me know and ill send them in with the swap."

*I feel like I'm in the Candy Isle!! I'm gonna check it out.

Erica:
"Garret - I know we just did a trade, but I'd like to get some of your Tobacco - Little Dutch and San Marzano Tomatoes. Feel free to take another look at my trade list. There might still be a couple things left that you're interested in."

*Putting you in for both. You'll like the Little Dutch! I do have many other Tobacco plants. Some of these grow up to 8' tall. The Little Dutch grows to 3' and is good for containers. Originally I wanted to mass plant these somewhere in the yard as an ornamental and to use. There are a good bit of things I'm interested in on your list, lol. I would like to have: Santa Fe Grande Pepper and Chia Sage. The Chia Sage is an interesting one considering some of the history behind it.

RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Garret - Thanks for the Tobacco - Little Dutch and San Marzano Tomatoes. I have you down for the Chia Sage and Santa Fe Grande Pepper.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Erica, Thanks!
This is tough, lol.

Bumblebee23, I had to narrow down a bit from what I liked on your list! I'm interested in these: Bells of Ireland, Malope 'Carmine Rose', Columbine 'McKana Giants Mix', Rose Campion, Celery 'Tendercrisp', and Pea 'Blauwschokker'. Check out my list too...

Pmb2005: I'm interested in your Purple Coneflower, White Pow Pow Coneflower, Cosmos "Single Sensation Mix", and the Black From Tula Tomato. If you still have them available...

Midwestfarmwife: The "Pumpkin On a Stick" will be a conversation piece - if you still have it available. Also, Dames Rocket and Datura Inoxia.

Suzydaze: I'd love to have the "Money Plant" and "Rose Moss". The Money Plant reminds me of my Grandmother who passed years ago. She had dried cuttings of them and spoke about it quite often. She'd say it's good luck it'll bring you money. Well, I can use more of that!

Sinbadsmom: Do you still have Nora Barlow Black Columbine, Ruby Port and Christa available?

Cnading: You have two on my want list, Amish Paste and Strawberry Popcorn. And two others of interest, Purple Coban Tomatillo and the Portulaca Flower.
I'll email you about the peppers. I have a few questions as well as letting you know what I have.

*If I'm doing anything wrong here, please let me know.
Thanks...

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

leilahamaya: Do you have Summer Savory and German Chamomile available?
From what I see on your exchange list, do you know about or have the type of roses (seed) for Tea? I'm trying to get plants for a Tea Garden. It's something that I think my wife will take an interest to. She loves tea - and when she had a Peach Blossom purchased at a Tea store, she went on for days about it. I'm trying to encourage her.

If anyone knows of a good plant, herb, flowers that are good for tea... Can you name a few? Thanks in advance...

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Does anyone have black flowers?

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

tamela_star - I have black hollyhocks (old fashioned single bloom) and black knight scabiosa (deep burgundy/black flowers) if you're interested.

Garret - I'll set those aside for you - I also will have Scarlet Runner Beans in a couple of weeks that I can set aside for you if you still want those...I noticed them on your wish list. If you still have the following I would love: Pepper 'Bolivian Rainbow Chili', Eggplant 'Early Long Purple', Brussels Sprouts 'Catskill'. Thanks!

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

I would love the Scaboisa black Knight! I got them in a trade last year but sadly didn't germinate because they were old seeds. Thank you so much!

RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

@garret
yes i do have some chamomile, and one packet of summer savory.

and ALL roses are good for tea, in fact all roses are edible flowers, though some of them are better for that purpose than others. some people cook with the petals, which can also be used for tea.

but most people use just the rose hips, which are the seed .some of the best for this use are also some of the plain rose, like wild roses have fairly juicy hips, rugosa roses have huge hips, where many big pretty roses have small hips.

some of things on my list are for tea, and i grow medicinal and tea herbs. lemon balm, mints, chamomile are some that i have. mugwort is another thing i use for tea, though its not enjoyable flavoring, rather its medicinal. red clover is another plant i collect and dry for tea, also blackberry and raspberry leaves and fruits, are good tea mixing ingredients. theres some more...

i have recently moved again so i am trying to build up my tea herb gardens too. some of the stuff on my most wanted list is tea herbs. like camellia sinensis which is what black and green tea is made of, anise hyssop is another good one.

another thing that is good for tea is hibiscus, all hibiscus plants are entirely edible, every part of the plant. the one that is most used for that is roselle hibiscus sabdariffa. maybe if that plant you want to id is hibiscus, you could use it in a tea blend.

if you want to do a side trade for some of this, i will look over your list. i have already included some of these things in the general package

"leilahamaya: Do you have Summer Savory and German Chamomile available?
From what I see on your exchange list, do you know about or have the type of roses (seed) for Tea? I'm trying to get plants for a Tea Garden. It's something that I think my wife will take an interest to. She loves tea - and when she had a Peach Blossom purchased at a Tea store, she went on for days about it. I'm trying to encourage her.

If anyone knows of a good plant, herb, flowers that are good for tea... Can you name a few? Thanks in advance... "

"Garret - I'll set those aside for you - I also will have Scarlet Runner Beans in a couple of weeks that I can set aside for you if you still want those...I noticed them on your wish list. If you still have the following I would love: Pepper 'Bolivian Rainbow Chili', Eggplant 'Early Long Purple', Brussels Sprouts 'Catskill'. Thanks!"

*Yes, I'd like to have the Scarlet Runner Beans if you can save some aside for me - that'd be great. And yes, I'll put you down for the Pepper 'Bolivian Rainbow Chili'. And set aside Eggplant 'Early Long Purple', Brussels Sprouts 'Catskill'. Thank you!

Laylahamaya:

*Yes, send me an email and we can go over what you come up with. Thanks for the information. I never knew that all roses were used this way. That's cool. Thanks much for your help!

RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Tea Herbs - Another great one that no one mentioned is Lemon Verbena. The scent is heavenly. It is by far my favorite scented herb.

@ Everyone I have side trades with -- I have your seeds individually packaged with your name. Please do the same for the seeds you are sending me. Everyone else with side trades might want to consider doing this as well, because if one person sets their seeds aside in an individually labelled bag and the person they are trading with doesn't, one person gets screwed and one person gets bonuses. I know you all want to be fair and not screw over your trade partner!

Bluee19:
Can you put me down for:
Hot Pepper, Satan's Kiss Hot Chile
Lemon Balm
Mint, Spearmint ?

Becki25msmolly:
Do you have enough to put me down for these?...
Rose of Sharon - white - lavender
Dutchman's Pipe - very interesting!
Ground Orchid
Obedient Plant
Mushroom Pepper - (A Love of the Peppers!)
Thai Dragon Pepper
Ghost Bhut Jolakia (I've got some of these - but they may not be good seed - their the poorest out of what I have)

*I think I know what the flowering bush is outside now! I saw it in the images from the Rose of Sharon! I'm 99% sure of it.

Leila, You sure did good on guessing! Without a picture even. Nice job! And thanks! I saw a picture of a few Rose of Sharon's entwined around each other. That sure would be fun to train! I just have to figure out the exact color now.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Becki25msmolly: please set aside some ground orchids for me. I am an orchid lover and I would love to have them. Can you post a picture of them? I would LOVE to see them!

Blue: I will set aside some daylilies for you. I also have stargazer seeds as well.

Erica:
"Tea Herbs - Another great one that no one mentioned is Lemon Verbena. The scent is heavenly. It is by far my favorite scented herb. "

*That's cool! Yesterday, I was researching "tea" and found this one you just mentioned. That seconds it for me. I immediately added it to my list. Thank you for bringing that forward, it's good to hear it from someone who has experienced it on a personal level. Is Lemon Beebrush the same plant or different? I found the name mentioned right alongside Lemon Verbena. It was a little confusing to tell if it was saying they were the same or not. Thank You for your help! I gotta make my wife Happy and sure would love to see her that way!

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Garret - I had never heard of Lemon Beebrush, however when I checked the scientific names of the two, they were the same, so yep, it appears it is the same as Lemon Verbena. And I promise that your wife will love it!

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

@bluee19

ok, i will try to send some of that. i say i will include like less than half of those, mostly because my package is packed up now, and the ones you want are really bulky. ! and thats thats really kind of a lot you are asking for.

maybe when the hostess goes through my stuff she can pack it up for you, but i havent included any grapes in there. i am ready to send mine out and i am over 100 packs, and lots of extra trades. i am ready to just send it out now.

i am sorry but theres nothing i can use from your seed list

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Marked side trades make things easier, but I will definitely be looking through the posts for requested items and wishlist items to set aside for each person before I start divvying up the non-requested items. I have a spreadsheet started, so if anyone is requesting things after they've been packed up or sent in I will still try to catch them and add them to that - no worries.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

@garrett i will include the summer savory, chamomile and some rugosa rose seeds, i have a white one that produces lovely hips, the size of a small apple.
i am interested in sweet banana peppers, marconi red peppers, and maybe some other kind of pepper as well. ?

otherwise i want to finish packing this up and ship it off...

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Good Evening All,

Garret, I will set aside some Cinnamon Basil, Dame's Rocket, Datura inoxia, and Pumpkin On a Stick for you. I gave my brother-in-law a Pumpkin On a Stick plant, and he wintered it over as a house plant last year. I think he still has it.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Erica, Thanks so much for checking that out for me. I'm sure I'll come across it sooner or later. I have got to get it now - Ha Ha!

Leila, I did see your last edit and appreciate the extra information. I'm going to mark those in my want list as well. If I do run across these I'll try to let you know about it too. And Thank You for the seeds. I checked out the Rugosa Rose - images... Hee-hee, I never looked at a Rose and thought, FOOD!!! I wonder what my neighbors would think if they saw me eating Rose buds? Supremo Creepy Guy, lol. I will also look into the Hibiscus plant. I think I need some sleep, I've pictured myself gnawing on the thick stems! Anyone knowing I've got five kids might understand?

Hey all, I'm loving it and coming on here has been making my day brighter. Thank you! Leila, I'll put you down for the Sweet Banana, Marconi Red and a side of "Cherry Hot". It's sweet and hot. I got enough for one last packet of that one. I wish I had more of it to put up on the list. Edit to add... Let me know if you want the Cherry Hot or another. I'd like to send something you want - you pick. Thank you!

Cnading, looks great! Thanks...

Midwestfarmwife, Thank you! That "Pumpkin On a Stick" is gonna be fun!

This probably will not be the last time I say this... I want to send a big Thank You to Bumblebee23 for hosting this. I'm trying to keep up with trades, side trades, etc of my own. I can't imagine how "Stir Crazy" it would make me to organize through approximately 1,700 + packets of seeds. Let alone everyone's trade requests. That number will most likely grow too. Thanks B!

RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

hey crazyfarmgirl14 =)

i would love some of the marsh mallow =)
and a bit of borage too.

i have lots of calendula and chicory. its wild chicory, and then i have mixed orange and yellow calendula, and some thats pale yellow, some thats bright orange. they may have crossed anyway.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Welcome : ) Crazyfarmgirl14,
Wouldn't mind some of that Borage myself - if you can. I've got some Carrots I've just added to the list. Carrots "Short 'n Sweet"

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Hi leilahamaya,
I will put you down for some borage and marshmallow. If you could put me down for some chicory and calendula, that'd be awesome!
Garretds7,
I can put you down for some borage, or add it to the trade we're working on now! And I would love some of those carrot seeds.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Crazyfarmgirl14, For a minute there I thought I had yours packed up. But we didn't close on it yet. So yeah, we can add that to the trade we're working on.

Leila, that's okay. I know, some are expensive. I didn't know anything associated with what they cost or how big those seeds are. I bought Artichoke seeds last year and got four seeds. Three germinated, two were nice and healthy and the other is purty small. I think it'll be next year when I get something off of them. When I move, I'll have to dig them up and take with. And yeap, I'm gonna let some go to seed.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Bumblebee23 if you have some Rose Campion and Pumpkin Musquee de Provence could you put me down for those?

EricaBraun if you still have lovage could you put me down for some?

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

crazyfarmgirl14,

I have you down for the Lovage. Can I possibly get some of your Marshmallow?

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

I've updated my list to add Grapes "Georgia Muscadine Vine". Picked them in the wild today at my fishing spot. Yeah, they are delicious. And better for you than the average grape.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

ooo i would like some =)

i have a few different young muscadine plants already....are they gold or purple/black ones?

i am about to seal up my package. i suppose i dont have to rush but my envelope is over flowing! going to try to mail off tomorrow.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Leila,
I'll put some on the side for ya. They're the Dark Purple ones. If you haven't sealed up your package can you add a few "Royal Ann" heirloom cherry tree seeds? I'm curious if this one can be grown in a large pot to train?

Quote: (Leila)

It's a good thing seeds don't grow like Popcorn. I wouldn't mind that... but you'd be in trouble, ha ha!

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Leila,
On second thought. Don't worry about the Royal Ann Cherry seeds. I think your envelope is full enough, huh? I'm thinking these are big seeds too... Pretty sure. So don't worry about it. Seriously.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Garret - Did you get my email from yesterday. I sent about 30 mins prior to the one you sent. I'm not 100% certain, but I'm guessing by the contents of yours, that you didn't see mine. Take a look!

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

EricaBraun,
Thanks! and Yes, I have Marshmallow for you!

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Erica,
Yeah, I got it today. I have my email in collapsible threads (easier to keep track). In an attempt to organize my email because of trade correspondence. Not used to it this way. It was in a way that I couldn't see it. Err. I did get it and responded. :)

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Garret - I've got a spreadsheet going for now and am feeling pretty good about everything, but I've only received about 250 seeds so far. We'll see what happens when the 1700+ seeds all show up and I have seeds stuffed all over my house while I organize them! I might go a bit crazy for awhile!

Welcome zackey and crazyfarmgirl14! I've added you both and sent you my address.

crazyfarmgirl14 - I've set those seeds aside for you. I just picked my Musquee de Provence pumpkins the other day and they're my new favorites. If you still have some I would love to try Orangeglo Watermelon. I was eyeing them up in the Baker Creek catalog earlier this year!

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Thank you Bumblebee23! Yes, I have Orangeglo watermelon for you!

Cnading, if you happen to have some Colossal Cantaloupe left, I would love some!

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Just added 10 more varieties to my have list near the top of the page.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Bumblebee23, I'm sure when the time draws closer to the date you'll be getting bunches of seeds in the mail. I will get mine up to the 100. I like the variety this puts out for everyone. My Mom has asked me to look out for Turnips. And I see you've got 'Purple Top White Globe'. Would you be able to set one aside for me? I feel like I may be asking too much. But it's there, lol. And Onion 'Yellow of Parma'.

I've finally taken pictures of the Tobacco 'Little Dutch' and the Hibiscus growing out front. From what I see so far, it looks to be a Rose of Sharon. The color is like a purplish blue. ...And uh, I kinda ate that poor plant you see in the picture. Well, ate a couple and then soaked it in some hot water - then filled it with ice-cold water. It was actually pretty darn good. Tasted like a cucumber and the feel was like that of one also (after soaking). So it's in my belly now... sorry.

I also have noticed, that everyday hummingbirds have been all over the 'Little Dutch'. However, I couldn't get a picture with the hummingbirds.

I'm putting a picture up in a few minutes...

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Garret - Very pretty. Thanks for posting that. I can't wait to give it a try.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

When I saw the hummingbirds after these flowers. They went to each and every one of them. Yeah, I wish I had my camera for it. Those are big seed buds. Each one contains an enormous amount of tiny black seeds. I've heard that a cluster like the one you see has about 250.000 seeds, lol. I'm not certain for sure of that, but I do know the smallest buds of a 'Habano 2000' I have, three of them filled a small ziploc halfway. This is the first I've grown tobacco plants and have found they are very easy to grow. This one, I believe is my favorite.

 o
RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

I'm just thinking ahead when I say this. This is the first I've grown these guys. I'd put them in a decent sized pot, rather in an area where your planning to or planting vegetables. I say this because of the tobacco virus. I'm no expert, but just want to make sure to mention that. I don't know much about it to be honest. For me... I really would like to plant these in a cluster next to each other. They look really cool grouped. But now that I'm planning for more garden and herbs, etc. I got to thinking about it. Just want to be on the side of caution. I know how hard it is to work in the garden and I don't want to be the cause of someones problem. That would really bother me. Before hand, I honestly didn't think about that. So do some research on it.

Erica, Thank you for the comment. They are really cool looking. I've heard some people like to grow the tall ones. A few that I have will grow to 8 foot tall. And others with thick 30" long and 16" wide leaves.

Ahh, found the info I have for this one:
Little Dutch
An heirloom variety dating back to the 1880's. It is sweet aromatic tobacco used in pipe blends and as a cigar filler.
It grows to around 3' in height and has narrow leaves growing up to 30" long. The long narrow leaves also make an excellent cigar wrapper. It matures in only 45 days and is a good choice for container growing.

RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Hibiscus 'Rose of Sharon'? - Flower Bud and Leaf
(Finally, for those of you that can tell me for certain whether this is what I labeled it as) The bush has grown to be about 7' - 8' tall. You can't see much of it in this photo, but it has a bluish tint to it.
Yep, I ate it and I drank it up, lol. Twas actually purty good, lol.

RE: NEW: Seed Purge 2014

Garret - That's definitely some sort of hibiscus. I can't verify rather or not it's Rose of Sharon though. I don't have enough familiarity with the species. That one is a beauty though. You should post that pic on the Name That Plant forum. That's a great resource - many very knowledgeable people there.
