NEW: 'Seed-Hot-Cocktails' Round Robin

nettasaura

So, you know we all have those miscellaneous packs of seeds laying around that say something non-descript like "Marigold fluffy yellow" or "Calendula Mix". These seeds stand a very good chance of never being sown. So I was thinking why don't we have a Robin where we get to take all those non-descript seeds and make our own GW Hot Cocktails with those seeds.

Rules:

1). Each person will mail me an 8x10 bubble mailer with at least 10 packs of unnamed seeds(contact me if you have less than that and would still like to play), more would be great. Each person will include in their envie three 39 cent stamps for return postage and a return mailing label and a note with the words "Seed Hot Cocktails". I state that size of bubble mailer because I am hoping through player generosity that we will have enough to fill them up on the return.

2). I will keep a log of who has sent what. I will place the specific kinds (ie: marigolds, calendula, daylilies, etc.) into separate large ziplock bags. After all players have sent in their contributions, I will shake the bags up to make sure everything has gotten mixed real good. The resulting "Hot Cocktails" will then be divided up equally between all players. I will provide the craft baggies for this purpose. *see #4 for exceptions.

3). I will then mail you back your "Hot Cocktails". Hopefully we can turn what would have been a "Fluffy Yellow Marigold" into a sea of "Marigold Colors".

4). Exceptions for rule # 3 are as follows. For example, let say that a trader has sent in a package of "Brugmansia unknown color" that has only 15 seeds in it and nobody else sent in any. If we have twenty or more players, I think it would be fair to say that we cannot divvy this up fairly. So in this instance the package would be returned to the original owner.

5). Players should list what they will be sending to me here so that other potential players can see what they can add to and what they can add on that hasn't been listed yet. When the mixing and distributing is done, I will post a Master List of what everyone will be getting in their return envies. I hope this will be fun.

Please post here that you would like to join and then I will email you my snail mail address separately. Signup deadline is October 31st. Players must have their seeds mailed to me by November 5th, so I can have them back out by the 10th.

Ok, so after looking through what everybody has listed and putting it all on a spread sheet, and yes I realize that some of you will be sending even more than you listed, I have come to a conclusion.

The exceptions that I stated in Rule #4 look like they will be quite a few and I was thinking that it would really defeat the purpose of the "hot cocktails" if I have to send half of what each player is sending in back to them in it's original state.

So here is what I propose: To take all of those seeds that there be not enough of to make a genus specific (ie: marigold) hot cocktail and combine them all together to make some "Mega Hot Cocktails".

Here are your options, PLEASE choose one when giving your vote:
A). One large cottage garden mix - Herbs Mix
B). Perennials mix - Annuals Mix - Herbs Mix - Miscellaneous Mix
C). Stick the rule stated in #4

The majority vote will be the choice we will follow.
I will need to hear from all of you so that when your seeds arrive I can proceed accordingly.
    Thank You!
    Netta

And any new signups need not vote as the majority vote from the 14 players already here will stand as the new (or old) rule.

  • lizinnh

I vote for B and will be sending my bubble envelope out tomorrow. Thanks! LizinNH

No problem on listing the contents of the "Mega Cocktails" and for anyone who votes for C, it would not be fair or nice to use their "odd man out" seeds in the mixes, so I will make sure to return them to those players. (At least, I know for next time to use B as rule #4) - :o)

I vote for # B that is ok - I got one of those envelopes
last year marked 4th of July mix, and I got real cool plants from that envelope - I enjoyed them all. OrDella

Good idea Lisa. I will go through the spreadsheet later and see which contributions look to be the most likely "odd man out" selections, but there will possibly even be exceptions there...it is all dependent on the quantity of each kind that is sent in. I will post the "odd man out" list later. Thanks!

These are the items that there might not be enough of to create a genus specific "hot cocktail"...keep in mind that these contribution numbers are based only on what has been listed here by the players...it in no way accounts for multiples or quantity...if you have any of these items and would like to send some, feel free to do so. I want to do this, too....I am still harvesting, cleaning, and packing for another trade (YOURS!!!), so I *will* get this to you before Nov 5th! I was also thinking that a tall annuals mix and a short annual mix would be pretty helpful -- a lot of use could probably direct sow!! Waaay easier than cell packs or even wintersowing.

    Netta,

The subject line is offputting to people who don't like round robins - in fact the only reason I opened the post was because you wrote it.

Why don't you go ahead and make that new update thread, but put the word SWAP in the header (subject line) and then make a last call. In other words, extend the deadline until Nov 1 or 2nd using the word SWAP instead of Round Robin and I bet you'd get 1/2 dozen more takers. Just a thought...
