NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Posted by ourhappyhome 7b Georgia (My Page) on
Fri, Oct 9, 09 at 20:35

Hows about a VEGETABLE SWAP to celebrate the harvest!

I keep waiting for someone to initiate an edibles only swap. Guess I'm it. I really want to keep things small and controlled, so I'm looking for the first 25 people to sign-up. I'm sure I can be persuaded to add more if there is enough interest.

Here are the guidelines:

The deadline for sign-up is October 16th or when we reach our max of 25 participants.

Please post a message below AND email me with your name, address and top three wants (i.e., brassicas, legumes, carrots, not specific varieties). I will do my best to fulfill your wish list. No promises.

Seeds should be mailed to me by no later than October 23. I recommend some type of delivery confirmation to help you keep track of your package. Don't want anything getting lost in the mail. I will sort and mail them back to you one week later. As your packages come in, I will count the number of seed packs and make sure you get back the same number, plus any bonuses.

Seed Packs

Send in 15 - 20 seed packs. Large seeds (beans) must contain at least 12 seeds. A few more would be nice. Mid-sized seeds (cucumber, beet) about 20. Small seeds (lettuce, carrots, cabbage) must contain be reasonable size, say 50 - 75 seeds. Feel free to send in extra packs, just be sure to mark them as such.

Label each seed pack with as much information as possible, like dtm, color, type, variety (Broccoli: Early Dividend, 49dtm).

Please send your seeds to me in a bubble envelope. Make sure it is large enough to hold whatever you expect to get back. Include a list of the seeds you sent in so I don't send your seeds right back to you.

Can't wait to get started!

April

Bump. I hope we get more players because this looks like fun.

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

I'd love to join in! Heirloom veggies ok?

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Thanks for the bump slo.

Ryan, heirlooms and op varieties would be great. In fact, I hope we get a lot of unique and unusuals to try. I'll be sharing some of the more unique things in my seed box as well as a few high demand items. I just received a few new goodies. I won't share what they are just yet.

Let's try to keep this swap near the top. I posted a message on the veggie exchange and the winter sowing exchange as well.

RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Things are coming along. I'm getting lots of emails from interested parties. We have 3 new people. Welcome farmergirl, Kathy645 and Megan. Its okay to post questions here too. You wouldn't believe how many people actually have the same questions but are afraid to ask. We're all friends here. Feel free to post away!

**Be sure to sign-up here before emailing me.** Thanks

RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Count me in, I would love to be included.

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

I'm in the process of updating my have/want lists (after doing another swap) and compiling a list of things that I'm sending in for this swap. I will be checking other's want lists in case I have something that folks are looking for. So if you want something specific (especially tomatoes), put it on your want list so I can be sure and send it in if I have it. Also, when you say "extra packs" do you mean additional or duplicates? For some things I have a TON of seed, enough for anyone who wants some, so it is no problem sending in extra seed.

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Slo garden, by "extra packs" I mean bonus packs. I usually send more then the required number of seed packs,"bonuses" to be shared equally with swap participants. If you have an abundance of one type of seed, you may want to share some as bonuses.

I've looked through your wish list. There may be a few bonus tomatoes coming your way, namely (CPE, 1884, LGS and more):-)

 o
UPDATE: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

~~UPDATE~~
We may need to extend the sign-up deadline. Hope that's not a problem for anyone. The emails I'm receiving are mostly from folks who are involved in other swaps. There's lots of interest there, just not enough time.

I didn't say so in the original post, but its important that swap participants send in a variety of seeds. We want no more than 4 packs of the same variety, unless its an item in high demand. This excludes bonuses. If you're not sure - no problem. Send me an email and we'll figure it out together. Thanks

April

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Yes, I think we should extend the deadline to October 23. We haven't quite met our goal of 25. Let's just bump all deadlines back by one week. Therefore, your seeds should be mailed to me by October 30. I will have them back to you as a Thanksgiving Day present! Hurray!!!

Don't forget to email me.

April

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

I know it is a few days late, but if you need additional people, and commerical seeds can be used, I would like to jump in and do this too. I tried to e-mail you, ourhappyhome, but for some reason my computer won't process your user name. Anyways, please e-mail me back if I could jump in too. I could get my seeds out by friday and maybe out tomorrow if given enough time.

Thanks.

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

After reading the forum, I have a few questions that maybe some of you can answer. It is said on Oct 14 that "we want no more than 4 packs of the same variety". Does that mean that tomatoes, for example, are a "variety" OR does it mean 'no more than 4 packs of the same EXACT type of seed (ie. beefsteak tomatoes) should be sent?' Also, do we send postage in our envelope for the packages to be sent back out? If so, how much do we usually send? Lastly, are herbs considered to be traded in this round robin exchange? I know it says vegetables, but how exact are we being.

Sorry for all of the questions, but I figure I should probably ask someone as I have no clue to what I am doing.

RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Thanks for posting questions here gardengal. I've been answering lots of questions by email. I prefer this method because everyone can share in the answers.

There is a 4 pack limit on the same EXACT variety of vegetable, not the same vegetable. For example, 'Better Boy' is a variety of tomato. I would prefer no more than 4 packets of 'Better Boy' tomato from one source. I for one would rather not include herbs unless they are to specifically address a want on someone's wish list. I love herbs but already have quite a few. Others may chime in on this one?

Postage is not so simple. The best way to go about it is to take your package to the post office and have it weighed. Use that amount as an estimate for return postage and include an additional stamp or two. If you package is lighter than the original (which is unlikely) I will send back your additional stamps or you may donate them to the swap. I usually purchase additional stamps for packages that run a little short. Just a few. Thanks for the great questions.

April

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Okay my two cents since April said to chime in...I agree that I don't think Herbs are a veggy...a nice extra since, I've never recieved an "extra" that really fit into the swap but, they were always on the friges. I do love herbs but, I wouldn't send them as an actual swap myself. Each to his own judgement and that is JUST my opinion for what it's worth - not at all an expert...lol!!!!!

For postage...inside the US I use a flat rate box depending on how much I am sending. For my bean swap I used one because beans are heavy and for swaps that include things other than seeds I do too. For straight seeds to Canada I sent by weight then for return added the equivilant of what would be 3 extra stamps for Canada. (for that I did the ultimate no, no and sent cash but, it was a buck) That was a Pepper and Tomato exchange that had allot of extras sent to it. I'm just telling you this to give you an idea of what was suggested to me in the past. If you have allot of corn, peas, and beans they weight more and you might want to think about a flat rate small box if you are sending 15 to 20. They will be protected and the box comes free. By the time you buy the box and the postage the cost averages out plus the flat rate boxes are priority mail. I know you can get 15 STUFFED bean packets in a small one.

Anyway...like I said...I am NO swap expert! Just my experience and what's been past on to me. I also always include a return address label in my envelope so the swap person can just slap it over their address on my envy or box and use it to return it to me...one more thought...lol...if you use one of the plastic bubble envy's you get at walmart, they are only a few cents more and protect your seeds even more then the paper bubble ones. Then Tape the envelope closed with clear packing tape then the swap person can cut the tape open without ruining the envelope and use the seal to seal it up and send it back!...just a trick I learned in my first swap.

Went on WAY too long...sorry!

Hugs to all,

Jamie

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Is 20 packs of seeds the maximum you want from any one person?

Patti

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

No problem gardengal. That's what we're here for.

Welcome Rebekah. Glad you could join us. You have mail.

Patti, my original intent with the 20 packs was to make sure I had enough "good" selections to send back to each person. I am planning to send in at least 35 packs myself, but those over and above 20 will be bonuses. That is, they will be gifts for which I do not expect anything in return. Because of our small size, I really hate to limit folks to just 20 packs. I say, send in as many as you like. Just know that I can only guarantee you will receive 20 packs + bonuses in return. I hope that's clear. If there are lots of extras I think generous traders should receive first consideration. Last year, I participated in a swap where one trader sent 100 bonus packs of seed. I had no problem with someone like that receiving extras.

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Good news guys.....its FRIDAY!!!

Today is the day we've all been waiting for. We didn't reach our goal of 25, but I'm not the least bit bothered by that. Are you? I think we have 15 awesome folks and we should definitely proceed with the swap. Please chime in with your thoughts.

There are a couple of things I'd like to clarify before we begin.

This swap was not intended to be a WLOMWL. I think its a good idea to search wish lists before deciding what you will send, but I realize in some cases, folks have a limited supply/variety of seed and are unable to address specific requests. That's perfectly okay. There are other swaps on this forum to take care of that. We're just a bunch of happy-go-lucky, vegetable lovin', gardening swappers who love to try new things. If you have something fun and interesting to share, send it in. Maybe you have some old fashioned garden staples. Send those in too! Just relax and have fun people. The great thing about swapping is the mystery of it all. For me, the best part is not knowing what the heck will show up in my box. I'm like a kid at Christmas. Everyday, I run out to the mailbox in search of my surprise. The day that it comes is really a special day. Last year, when my my envelope arrived, I carefully placed it on a shelf. Then, I set about cooking and cleaning until all my chores were done. I put the kids to bed, put the DH to bed, took a nice, hot bath and settled in my most comfy chair with my precious mystery envelope. I got some really fantastic surprises and one or two duds :-). But that's to be expected. I even got back a packet of my own seeds. That was not so funny. All in all, it was great fun and that's why I do it over and over again. My heart wish is that my Harvest Veggie Swap will make us all smile, give us something to look forward to, and encourage us to share what we have with others - from seed to harvest. Thanks for being a part of it!

April

RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Oops - I wanted to join but posted first over on another forum. Was having a little trouble getting it to post for some reason. I was thinking about joining and then I read the available list from Seed to Seed and found I could have selected my 20 just from that list alone. LOL Am I too late? Carol

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Welcome Soonergrandmom. You're our 16th participant. Really glad to have you.

You have mail.

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Our first package is on its way! When you mail, post a message here to let everyone know. Lets keep this thread going.

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

My package is packed and waiting for the address. Will be mailed on Monday. Sending ourhappyhome an email now.

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~2

ourhappyhome - Received your address just now and will mail package on Monday.

I was able to be generous with most things except tomato seed. I only sent three packages and one of those is to fill a request. In all cases I sent only 12 seeds since that was about half of a commercial pack. I just bought them and haven't grown any of them yet. Of course, I don't plant 12 of any one kind in the same year anyway, so maybe if it is something you really want to try, 12 will be enough. It would be enough for me to try it and if it was something I really wanted, I would be happy to receive twelve little seeds.

I didn't make a wish list, but I would be happy to receive ANY pepper seed.

I like all tomatoes, especially purple ones. I would like any early tomato and would also like to try Kellogs Breakfast.

I would love to have Broccoli Raab or Green Sprouting broccoli, and any unusual winter squash. I would also like to have Cherokee Trail of Tears beans.

We eat just about all garden vegetables so I will not be unhappy with anything I receive. Thanks. Carol

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

I sent my package today! (I thought that I already posted this, but apparently it didn't take)

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

My package should go out Monday. It is mostly packed. I'm a bit overwhelmed as it is my first mailing, so I hope all goes well. I am really enjoying my GW experiences so far and am excited to participate in this swap.
Kathy

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

slo_garden, you sent your message to my email. Ryan, Kathy645, soonergrandmom,Tod65 I got your messages too.

Looks like Monday will be a big day at the post office. Those of you that need more time, don't worry. You have until Friday, October 30 to mail your seeds to me.

I highly recommend priority mail or delivery confirmations. Not required, but a good idea. I have extra priority mail boxes.

Thanks

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Hey April and Fellow Swappers! I'm all packed up and ready for Fun! Just finished putting some tape on my box.

April, mine will be coming priority mail but, I won't be getting it to the PO until tomorrow. We have a whopping wall of Thunder storms heading for us out of the West and I need to button things up here but, I still have plenty of time until the Friday deadline. I have 20 swaps and 32 extras coming your way...16 people is a great number to get an interesting swap! What fun!

RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Lots of packages arrived today. Yippee, the fun begins!

So far, everyone has done a wonderful job of packaging and labeling. And so many bonus packs. I personally am up to 57 packs. Can't seem to stop myself.

Slo_garden, or should I say "Tomato Queen" and farmergirl, you must have spent hours handwriting notes. Such a thorough job.

Tod65, what a wonderful selection of melons. I can't wait to try a few.

Patti1957 wins the prize for the most unusual variety so far. Some very cool contributions.

This is going to be an amazing swap! I'm actually very glad we kept it small. It's turning out so much better than swaps I've been involved in before because everyone is so generous and there is more than enough to go around. Thank you , thank you, thank you.

April

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

After I posted my wish list I went back and looked at what everyone was offering and saw Tod65 had Israeli Melon and someone else had Tigger, both of which I would love to try. There's some good stuff out there on those lists. This is going to be fun swap.

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Wish I hadn't missed this one, I just took stock of all my veg seed and I have so much! Lol... oh well, there's always next time!

Okay, I had a brain f**t! The package the postman didn't pick up on Tues. got taken to the Post Office on Wed. and arrived in my mailbox this afternoon. I can't be the first person who slapped the wrong label on a package, but I sure feel stupid and embarrassed! So it will go out again tomorrow. Sorry guys, I guess mine will be the last one to get there.

I've Got Mail

Vegeplanter, W9yards, Columbine21, your packages arrived today. Lots more goodies to sort through.

Ryansr and Gardengal1 have mailed their packages too.

Thanks everyone

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Just a quick question for anyone... I'm thinking I may be overzealous with the swapping, how many packets do you usually send in? I know I'm not going to under-do it, but I don't want to grossly over-do it either. Thanks for your opinions!

Scarlett

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

We agreed on a minimum of 20, but you can send as many bonus packs as you want, as far as I know. I only sent a few extra, but it sounds like some people sent many more than that. I guess the only issue is if we provided enough postage for the return trip. LOL I'm not worried about that myself because I paid for a flat rate box, so "bring 'em on". However I may feel a little guilty that I didn't send more bonus packs, but I certainly will feel appreciative for all I receive. This is so fun.

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

My package was mailed again today! Yay, now it can be fun again.

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Thanks for the input!

Scarlett

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

By now, all swaps should be in the mail. If for some reason you are having trouble, please send me an email. When the last envelope arrives, I will begin sorting and redistributing seeds. I am happy to say that so far, my system of receiving and categorizing seeds has been very effective. The hard part will be making sure everyone gets at least some of what they really want. I plan to take my time and look carefully through your exchange lists. I will begin with your top 3 wants. My goal is to have this completed, with packages in the mail to you by Saturday, November 14. Your swaps will arrive the week before Thanksgiving.

I borrowed this "gif" from another round robin post. Isn't it cute!

RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Don't forget to set your clocks back tonight!

Ryansr and Gardengal1, your envelopes arrived today. Thank you

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

I can't remember if I posted that my box is on it's way. I sent a priority box...one of the little ones with stamps and lables for return if you just want to restuff it and tape it up you can just slap the stamps on it and return it. I tried to make it as easy as possible.

Hugs,

Jamie

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Jamie,
If you don't mind me asking, how much does it usually cost to mail a box like the one you described?

Rebekah (who is not familiar with mailing boxes)

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

$4.95 It's the what ever it weigh's kind of box. I just thought it would be easiest. The mediums that I have for my seed plus other stuff swaps will be closer to 10 but, I can't remember how much. I just started useing them becuse it's just so east knowing hoe much too send.

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Here are the box sizes. The $4.95 box is 5 3/8 x 8 5/8 x 1 5/8 and will hold a lot of small seed packs.

http://www.usps.com/prices/priority-mail-prices.htm

The box is free (ask at your post office) and you can ship as much as you can fit in the box, any weight.

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Assuming everyone mailed when they said they did, the bubble envelopes beat priority mail every time. The most expensive postage was about $2.50.

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Mine may be the exception, because I mailed in a bubble but paid for a flat rate on the return. You didn't mention receiving mine and I mailed on Monday. It must be where I live that makes the difference because it always seems to take longer. However, I sent an "in-state" flat rate box on Tuesday and it arrived on Thursday. I hope you get mine on Monday because I stopped trading last year because I had so many get lost. I think (at least, I hope) that the problem has been solved. It looks like there are only a few that haven't arrived. Carol

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Well in my case I had beans and peas which don't seem to do very well even in bubbles so I prefer to send them in a box and a small mailing box is $1.99. Even if the postage is $2.50, at $4.50 I would just rather go ahead and send the box priority.

Now my box was not sent on the day I originaly estimated because of a wicked case of the flu and my po being so far away but, it was still sent by the deadline. I got 52 seed packets in a small box with some extra room and that included 6 full Bean packets and 3 or 4 pea so they really do hold allot...Of course I don't use them if I am just sending regular seeds or maybe on pack of beans or peas. It's just a personal preference I guess.

Hugs,

Jamie

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Jamie, Do you plant pole or bush beans?

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Jamie, thanks for the postage costs/mailing info!

Carol, thank you as well.

Rebekah

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

I plant both bush and pole beans but, am also a novice at poles really. My m-i-l really got me started and she was a bush person. My in-laws have grown things like pintos for snaps forever and ever. They have beds set aside just for there favorite beans. My husbands Aunt Elsie got me into poles with Florida speckled limas...my husbands loves them and they grow great in the heat and humidity. I just don't do well setting up things for them to grow on. I know it sounds silly but, I just don't know what to grow them up if not a fence. Everything I try manages to fall over in the wind.

Rebekah - You are more than welcome honey.

Hugs,

Jamie

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Received 4 more envelopes today and all were simply bulging at the seams. Wow guys! Soonergrandmom, arroyogardener, Kathy645 and Lisa831. My thanks to you for the time you invested in organizing and labeling your contributions and for your generosity. Everyone in the swap has done a wonderful job. Thanks so much guys.

I'm waiting for just one more envelope which should arrive in the next few days.

April

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Jamie, Thanks for answering my question. I normally grow pole beans as well, but I think I am going to grow some of both next year. I live in an area that has a lot of spring rain and because of a back problem I have trouble just bending over to pick beans, so I normally use a kneeling stool which doesn't work so well if it is muddy. I was lucky enough to go to Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds twice this fall and I found several new beans that I want to try. I think I will plant pole beans as normal, but after the spring rains pass, I will also plant bush beans. In the past I have mostly grown for fresh eating for which I like pole beans, but next year I plan to freeze or maybe even can a lot so I think the bush habit would be better for that. I live in the NE corner of Oklahoma just a few miles from Missouri and Arkansas.

I grow pole beans on a cattle panel. One of them is built into an arch, two others (halves) go straight up 8 feet, and the others are just placed horizonally and held in place with t-posts. They are wonderful for the garden for anything that climbs. I have five and will probably be buying more before spring. The problem with a fence is that you need to be able to pick both sides, or let your neighbor pick the other side. LOL

I found a picture that shows the panels before they were covered with vines. You can see one side of the arch with some cukes just starting to climb up high in the center of the picture. Next year I will mount the horizonal panels about a foot off the ground because my pole beans had to "fall over" quite a distance at the top this year.

Here is a link that might be useful: Early planting

 o
WooHoo - Only one to go.

April, it sounds like you will be very busy trying to sort through all of this. Thanks for doing the swap. Carol

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Perfect! I'll need to show Gene. Quick, simple, not overly expensive and sturdy. I have Parkinson's so though I don't always have many bad days there are days that getting down is okay but, back up isn't an option...lol... so this looks like it would be a big help. I will have to get a touch more organized though. I tend to be a stick it where there's space gardener - which is a bad habit. Thanks for the info and the pic honey. That REALLY helps. It will help with the peas too.

When It comes to putting them by I like to freeze peas but, I much prefer to can beans but, that's just me. Everyone feels differently about it. It's more work to can but, I think the flavor is better but, it's just a matter of taste and what you plan to use them for I guess. I also, for some reason, NEVER fail to end up with freezer burned beans in just a matter of a couple of months.

Thank you so much for the pic and info!!!!

Hugs to you,

Jamie

 o
RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Jamie, I grow snow peas on mine every year but I have noticed that they would rather cling to each other than to the panel, so when they are about 18 inches I put a cord around the panel at about that height and weave it in and out a little. Sometimes I will tie them again at about the top of the panel because they don't always behave well. Beans, on the other hand, grab hold early and climb beautifully.

You may need two people to get the arch up if you decide to go that way. Some people just make a smooth arch and put four short t-posts at the corners, but we made ours into more of a gothic shape. It was at the entrance to my growing area, but I keep extending my garden so I may have to move it for next year. We put a 2x4 board in the center where we wanted it to bend, then one stood on it while the other tried to bend it up. They are stiff so it is a little hard to bend, but I like the look.

I bought several kinds of long beans to grow next year, in addition to the regular green beans. I think they will look great on the panels.

April, I am going to have to ask you to take me out of this swap. Please just pass my seeds out among the others. Use my postage for anyone short or keep it for a later swap. Thank you.

RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Jamie,
I hope you reconsider. I don't think you should let others ignorance dictate what you do here. Although I understand why you want to get as far away from here as you can, I think you should know that we are not all of one mind. I believe that some on this site have made a grave mistake and I also believe in innocent until PROVEN guilty. Please don't let them run you off.

Jamie, I don't know what has happened, but I hope I didn't offend you in any way. Don't drop out of the swap now because the hard part is completed and only the joy of receiving is left. Hang in there. Occasionally a swap gets nasty but most of the time they are really fun.

My first one scared me off for over a year. A lady posted free seeds to about 20 different flowers. I sent my envelope to her and got back the seeds alright, but they weren't separated and were all in one envelope. Now even with flowers I don't like to plant that way.

Hang in there and wait for your seeds. It will be like Christmas in November. Carol

Jamie (arroyogardener), I hope we've convinced you to stay. As I said in my email, we're a family. We're all in this thing together.
You sent in a bundle of seeds and you'll get a bundle in return. Hugs and more hugs

Does that mean you have received everyone's package????? If so, that was pretty fast. Can we get excited now???

RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Hey there guys. Sorry I haven't been around much this week. Things are really crazy at home and I find I'm on the go most of the time. Thank God its' Friday.

Soonergrandmom, I've received all but one swap. Hopefully, it will arrive this afternoon.

I've already begun the tedious process of sorting through the seeds. We have a good selection of heirloom and Op varieties. There aren't many rare and exotic seeds, but plenty of good, garden staples. As far as bonuses go, I'm sure you'll all be pleased. Look for 5 or more extras in your return envelopes. We did have one person send in just 7 packets of seed. That throws the count off just a bit but remember, you only get back as much as you sent in.

Thanks
April

Okay, I'm getting excited and it's soooo quiet! Anyone else excited? Or is it just because this is my first real swap? Hope everyone had a great weekend!

RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Kathy, I know exactly how you feel. This time around, since I'm organizing the swap, I don't have seeds to look forward to. However, I am anticipating your reactions. I've done my best to address your wish lists and I must say, I think I've done a pretty good job. I finished the last envelope today. Actually, I finished sorting on Sunday, but I spent the past couple of days checking and rechecking to be sure everything is in order.

Swaps will go in the mail on Saturday, November 14th. Please post a message here when yours arrives.

Rebekah, I didn't receive a melon by that name, but I have something similar in my seed box. I'll make sure you get a few bonus seeds.

That's all for now folks. Please remember to let me know when your box/envelope arrives.

Hugs!
April

April,
I got my seeds today with extras! Thank you so much. I was really pleased with the variety. I am actually going to plant six of them today. I live in southern California and have my vegetable garden year round. I am still picking tomatoes and several varieties of squash as well as beans and greens from my summer garden. I try to grow most of our food and give produce to several other families as well. I have a large orchard too and just finished picking hundreds of pomegranates which are so time consuming to process, but I love the juice. Again thank you so much for taking your time to organize this exchange. I will think of you when I am harvesting!

Thanks!

Diana

RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

Boy that was lightning fast. Diana, I envy your weather. Ours is up and down which makes it difficult to keep summer crops going into the fall. My tomatoes were killed by a freeze, but its 80 degrees here today - go figure. I'm a huge fan of pomegranates. I love to eat them but I've never thought of actually growing my own. Is it complicated?

Lisa, I'm glad you like your seeds. Yours was a challenge because you didn't have a wish list. Did you get enough tomatoes and peppers? I have a large selection of heirlooms. If you're looking for something specific, send me an email. I just might have it.

Thanks

April, I got my package; I got my package! I love my package! I love my package! So much to try next year. Thank you, thank you, thank you all. The variety of seeds was great. I worried I would get things that were not suitable for our short season. There was only one packet of seeds might fit that category and it sounds so good I may try it anyway. As a newbie, I am grateful and thrilled to be part of this group. Kathy

Thanks so much for the encouraging words guys.

Next on my list of things to do is a photo diary of how to grow onions from seed. I purchased the onion variety 'Candy'. My plan is to share the seeds and invite others to join me. Let me know if you're interested. This time of year I just have to think up ways to keep busy. LOL

RE: NEW: ~~Harvest Veggie Swap~~

April,
I am growing leeks from seeds right now, I haven't tried onions. My onions from last year are all carefully stored in netting that is knotted in a long strand. Storage is an issue for us because of our heat so I have to watch them carefully. Pomegranates are really easy for us to grow because of our climate. The only work we have is pruning suckers out. We have enough from one tree to have a daily smoothie with frozen pomegranates, orange juice, and bananas all from trees in our yard. That coupled with eggs from our chickens and fresh veggies from the garden is our usual breakfast.

Thanks again for the seeds, I had fun looking them all up and planting quite a few.

Diana
