| I don't know about you, but, I tend to get a bit squirrley in Jan and Feb when I can't get into the dirt to play and even the winter sow pots show no signs of life. So to help pass the time... how about a secret squirrel swap. You will send and receive three packages. oOe in Jan and two in Feb approx two weeks apart.
Rules will be: maximum cost of $5.00 per package. Stuff that you make yourself or find squirreled away somewhere around your house is even better and all must relate somehow to squirrles, trees, or nuts. This is your chance to be creative, funny or a bit squirrley and help to bring some smiles to a fellow gardeners face. Anybody interested? |

| DebbyA, glad to have you sign up for the swap but, your email is blocked for replies. You can unblock it by going to your member page and changing it there OR you can just email me direct. Hope to hear from you again so you can join all the other nuts and squirrels in the Tree House. Everyone else... welcome to the Tree House. Looks like this will be a real nutty bunch. Those of you who claim to be "Pack Rats" should have some interesting things to pass on to your fellow Squirrels. |

| Thanks Beth for explaining how to unblock my email, I just did. I didn't know it was even blocked. I'll send you an email with my info. Deb/IL. |

| I have addresses for most of you from other swaps. If you are not sure.... then send me an email with your real name, GW name and snail mail address. Do not post your address here. Soon "Secret Squirrel" will start traveling to each tree house in this swap looking for his favorite snacks. If you are the first person to guess and feed him his favorite snack he will come back and bring you a prize. There may be a "second place" prize too. Also be thinking about how things you send will relate to trees, nuts and squirrels. Someone asked about craft supplies,,,, well if it's shiny the squirrel will stash it in his nest just because it catches his eye. If it soft or warm he might want it to make his nest warm and cozy. What else can you think of?? I'll take sign ups for a few more days and then start sending you your buddy's info. Hope to have first round ready to mail about the tenth of Jan. |

| Shannon, the $5.00 limit is for the gifts. By shopping flea markets or your own attic you could come up with some real clever things. Hope the postage won't be a burden. I'm with Susie on those flat rate boxes and even the $3.95 flat rate envies. Hey Sassy I'm on cold meds too and I hardly ever get sick. There is not much Flu around here but lots of adults with colds and sore throats anv even ear aches. Looks like a tough winter. Hope everyone has stashed away lots of nutty stuff. Earthly, I think I have your address. If not I'll let you know tomorrow. BB |

| Hi Jeanette, It's not too late at all. If you'd like to join.... we'd love to have you. You are just nutty enough to fit in with the rest of this crew, And, judging from the snacks you provided wnen daughter Kate and I visited, I KNOW secret squirrel will love visiting you and Ali. I'll take sign ups for about two more days and then assign pals so you all have your address and are ready to mail on or about the 10th. I plan to have Secret Squirrel start making the rounds for his snack search on Thursday. Wow, that is tomorrow already. He will need a head start if he is going to be able to visit everyone looking for his favorite snack by the end of Feb. He will arrive with a small snack for you and a packet of address stickers. You get to keep the snack he brings. Give him something else that you hope he will like better and send him off to the next person. (keeep it small and light. It's a snack not a meal and he is a pretty small squirrel. Pick the address that seems nearest to you. They will post when he arrives and what snack he brought. In the end he will return home to me to pick up the prize for the first player who gave him his favorite snack. He actually has two favorite snacks and if he finds BOTH, there will be two prizes. Meanwhile you will be sending three envelopes to your squirrley pal. One in Jan and two in Feb. Maximum cost $5.00 per package and all must relate somehow to squirrels, nuts or trees. Use your imagination, be creative, be a little nutty here and most of all.... Have Fun. |

|
- Posted by beth_b_Kodiak ak zone 1 (My Page) on Wed, Jan 4, 06 at 17:14
| Hi Trish There is not much that goes into a garden that you can't relate to squirrels some way. They will dig up, chew up or tear up most anything. I think that is why we have such a love hate thing with squirrels in our gardens. They are cute as can be but.... Anyway, TRY to figure some way to relate your things to the theme if you can. Stretch your thoughts and don't forget about all the things that grow on trees and/or are made from trees too. That includes tea coffee and chocolate paper pencils fruits etc. |
|
| Oh~~~~Beth, Beth, Beth.....I got your number girl! I have some cute things set aside for this robin, but the best one of all is set aside for you, our squirrely hostess! lol The funny thing is...I've had this set aside for several months, and just hadn't found the right "nut" to send it to, lol, but since this robin was your brainstorm, its the perfect surprise for you! lol Once you receive it....you'll understand! He will leave for the warm and sunny SE US in the morning IF they don't call me in to work tonight. He has his snack all packed and he is napping quietly waiting for his trip to begin. I hope he finds BOTH of his favorite snacks along the way. BB |

| Well, the squirrel is on his way. He will be going around , like a RR but just trading and looking for snacks. Sure, kinda like trick AND treat. He will bring you a treat and you will give him one for the next person he visits. Try to keep total weight under a pound and he'll fly for $4.05 I missed by 2 ounces and if I had time I would have switched from the box to a bubble envelope. That may have been enough to make the difference. I also mailed my first surprise to my squirrley friend. No shaving legs on this one. It's winter and what's a little fur among friends. LOL What you send to your pal should be somehow related to squirrles, trees or nuts (guess that means trees too). What you give the traveling squirrel, must be edible, lightweight and something you think a squirrel will like to eat, or maybe drink. Instructions are in the package. I camp a lot and have had squirrels steal granola bars out of my hand and chew through a plastic jar to get at peanut butter but neither of these things is SS's FAVORITE snack. BB |

| I got to the post office today so the package to my pal is in the mail. I have a confirmation number but wasn't sure if we needed one or should post it so waiting to hear. We have been having beautiful weather the last few days - in the 70s. Sure doesn't feel like January, but I love it! |

| Ok It looks like I need to clear up a bit of confusion here, I had a couple people email off the forum and ask about the gift limit. Yes it is $5.00 unless it it something you made or "found squirreld away in your nest". Also I think Sue sent a combined package. It sure sounds like a treasure trove. I mailed in a priority envelope and you don't need to feel obligated to send a big boxful of stuff. Try to be creative in what you send but, like the Squirrel ornament..... if it's really squirrley and you just "gotta send it" then go ahead. That's part of being squirrley. I did not request delivery confirmation because as Jeanne says it is NOT insurance that the package will be delivered. It is just for tracking and keeping tabs on when it gets there. For a $5.00 package it is scarcely worth the bother. I leave that as being optional. If it makes you feel better, then spend the extra 50 cents. 50 cents doesn't buy much, no matter where you spend it. |

| What a great surprise - secret squirrel is here for a visit! He was happy to climb out of his box and to see the warm weather and the sunshine. However, he is having to stay "up high" because my dog is sure that he arrived as a dog toy for her! I have him sitting on the VCR where he can look at the window at his SC cousins. The snack that came in the box included Snickers bars and hot chocolate. Yum! Thanks so much, Beth, and I'll be sure to buy a snack for the next person and send him on his way. (I guess with the holiday on Monday, he will go out on Tuesday. Hope that's soon enough.)

| my first package arrived and a lot of thought went into it too. there was an entire story included -- "january adventures of bushy, a south carolina squirrel" which related everything in the box to a squirrel. Jeanne (sandlapper) what an imagination you have -- what a great idea. thank you so much for my box of goodies. just like you predicted, the puppy thought it was for him, so when i got to the dog ball he was happy to see he was remembered and is now gladly tearing it apart! in my box was a yearly planner and a smiley face pencil, some "nesting" materials for the squirrel, note cards, plant food. a wonderful cookbook of west virginia honey recipes (we are eyeing that one now), address labels, a wonderful pansy-scented candle, snowmen (cloth) napkins, some rhinstone letters, beaded butterflies, flowers nad a suncatcher paint set. last but not least, peanuts! jeanne, i love the letter/story. you really did a great job of putting this package together and i thank you kindly. regards, |

| hmmmm, secret squirrel swap are we supposed to keep our identities a secret? what's the official rule on this? |
|
- Posted by beth_b_kodiak ak zone 1 (My Page) on Mon, Jan 16, 06 at 12:06
| Hi Earthly, No "official" ruling on the identity question. It would be fun to remail anonomus (SP??) but for many of us that would not be possible. Several are "only one in the state", so a look at the postmark is a giveaway. I personally never try to guess I enjoy the extra suspense but for someone who is dying to know it is not difficult through checking states and zones to eliminate most of the players. I used to use Jeanette (number1 angel's) address for all my swaps but she has moved. I also used to send packages to my daughters to mail from various places. So,No rule except if you want to be secret... give it a try. |

- Posted by beth_b_kodiak ak zone 1 (My Page) on Tue, Jan 17, 06 at 2:16
| 98% of a squirrel's energy relates to FOOD. A squirrel eats MORE than it's entire body weight in food every week. A squirrel's prefered position for eating is sitting on his hind legs BUT a squirrel can eat in any position including up side down. Squirrels bury nuts for winter but then can not remember where they burried them.... sound familliar? |
|
- Posted by number_1_angel z5 iowa (My Page) on Wed, Jan 18, 06 at 11:57
| Beth-- I would like to blame 'not remembering' where anything is on the fact that I moved 3 times in the past 6 months---BUT---fact is I could probably hide my own easter eggs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hahahahaha!! This is a great idea--my squirrely box will go out friday---with goodies for my 'squirrely friend'--I know my identity will not be a secret long!!:) Jeanette |

| The UPS Man was here and wow What A BOX of goodies he brought. A big bag of squirrley treats. All nice cozy southern hospitality type stuff that sure would not grow here. Corn on the cob, well, ears of corn (I guess it's still a cob even though it's dry) Pecans, these squirrels will think they have gone to heaven, sunflower seeds AND a sweet potatoe. I never tried that but I bet they like it. Should I cook it or just slice it up and put it in a dish?? Then, treats for me but very appropriatly Squirrley with nuts in each one. Snickers with Peanuts and almonds M&M Peanuts, salted peanuts and a peanut bar, That should keep me going for at least a couple days. A sachet called laundry line. It smells wonderful and and made me think about a squirrel walking tightrope on a laundry line. Cute. There was also a boot and some magazines. I'm running low on reading material and I love the pictures in the birds and blooms. NOW!!!! The clincher..... the greatest squirrley gift yet.... A mug with el squirrel dressed up as Seedo Bandido. Black mask, red cape, and a caption saying, "just hand over the seed and no one will get hurt". How perfect. I can't say thanks enough. This box was full of smiled and laughs too. Wonderful job there Sassy D. |

| I mailed the Secret Squirrel box with treats on Tuesday. Has someone received it? Beginning to worry a little. It didn't have far to travel. |
|
| Beth so glad you liked! It was fun, and the coffee mug is what I told you I've had for several months trying to decide which robin to use it in, then you came up with this one and I thought it was perfect! And yes, squirrels LOVE sweet potatoes! And you want to see something funny, tie a string from an ear of that corn and hang it from a tree branch, lol You'll get all the laughs you can stand! For the rest of you heres a pic of Beth's mug....

| Hey Dianne, That sweet tater will be frozen so solid when I put it out the furry tails will not know if it is cooked or raw anyway. It is -37 tonight Good thing our squirtels have tough teeth. LOL What kinda candy did you get??? If it is SS's favorite that puts Jeanne on the list for a prize. Pecan flovored coffee sounds goood too though I know squirrel never had that before. Glad you are getting to have a nice visit with S.Squirrel. I hope he is really enjoying his southern vacation. I'm sure ready for mine too. Wild birds unlimited sounds like my kinda place. Maybe on my next cross country trip I'll get to shop at one. Sounds like a blast. Back to work tomorrow night and I'm taking the new mug to show it off. Thanks again. Beth B |

| thanks Deb, that makes me feel really special. you inspired me for "theme-ing". i was your pal in carol's secret elf swap and just loved the themed packages. carol - i love the fact that you worry about me but rest assured, i am not much for the taste of beer, but this bread is fantastic and it calls for beer. i do believe you can use club soda, but i "borrow" a beer when i visit somewhere and then i can make it. have a good night everyone. maryanne/earthly |

| HI all, I'm just catching up on the posts here and I say "go for the beer". It's gotta be better in bread than in a glass. I personally like it with steamed crabs covering it up. Just love the Snickery Squirrel. You gals are so clever.... I'm proud to know you. Most anytime is OK for mailing that next box. Chances are slim of the PO getting any delivered before the first of Feb. Timing is not critical just so you get two out in Feb. (unless you are ahead and already sent all three.) I've never been ahead of anything unless it was a train. Then I'm just scrambling to get outa the way =) |

Carol, Box #2 arrived today. Wow! Thanks so much! As Carol said, there was a squirrel story. The WA squirrel is called Sherri. I probably won't remember all that was in the package but here goes: lots of yummy candy, Goldfish crackers, a magnetic shopping list, candles that smell like pies (apple, blueberry and pumpkin - they really smell good!), a scarf tie watch, the cutest radio that is pink and looks like a robot, a clear bag full of bath salts, soap, etc., and the cutest little glass ladybug that has little hearts on the end of her antenna. What a great package. Again, thanks so much! ![]() |

| Earthly, sounds like S Squirrel is doing a good job of finding snacks. Bet he is having a blast being a guest of honor in all these trees and getting the best snacks in the house. "trail mix for small animals"?? Now that sound interesting!! No need to say where he is going. He'll be there soon. I read this in an old Horticulture magazine and wanted to share it;""With the possible exception of squirrels, gardeners may be the most aquisitive creatures on earth. Even well balance gardeners order a good number of seeds "just to try" each year, and few can leave a nursery without buying at least three things they did not need". Guess I'm a very "well balanced" gardener because I just ordered about 25 packs from Value seed, 18 from,Pine tree, recieved an order from Sheepers and am anxiously watching for the Select Seed Catalog as I always order from them a time or two. I also sepnt a pleasant evening going through my stash..... like a miser with his money you know except that I'll share. Anybody need any seeds? Squirrels, collect seeds!! Got seeds?? |

| well, the snack box is all packed up and will be out in tomorrow's mail. since i am not supposed to say who it is going to, those that are left - head's up. hope you and your squirrely friends enjoy the treats i chose for you. i received my second package yesterday, which i am just loving. thank you so much pal (jeanne/sandlapper), i just love it. i got a new book, in the cutest little heart canvas bag. an envelope stamper, a butterfly windsock, a set of bookplates (which are fantastic). a cute little heart body -(it's hands and legs and instead of a body, it's a heart...too cute for words) and a paint sponging kits, which i will try using on some clay flowerpots. there was also the sweets lattice type fabric heart bag filled with hershey kisses and this magnificent "tree free" journal, which is will treasure forever. jeanne, the box was full of great things, but this journal is just so unbelievable! thanks for everything jeanne, what a great box! be well everyone. earthly |

| Beth, that trail mix looked good enough to eat, literly! I just about busted it open myself. lol And the power bar was all nuts of course! This is a fun robin, certainly makes you think....lol
