All the way from Alabama, I received a card today from Ron/sunnysouth36604 with luffa seeds in it. THANK YOU RON!
I've always wanted to grow some luffa, but didn't think to add it to my list this year. Looks like an elf whispered in Ron's ear for me. How cool is that?

The envelope was stamped with "received in damaged condition" message, but it looks like the seeds are fine! I'm definitely growing these this spring. THANK YOU, MARGO

    2. Chrystal: An adorable "HO HO HO" card with the following seeds: Bells of Ireland (need to look this up), Toothache Plant (sounds very intriguing!), and Swamp Milkweed. Thanks for your thoughtfulness in including sowing tips. I love these. THANK YOU, CHRYSTAL

How fantastic and wonderful,...I received two more cards today!

    From socalgardengal (Christine) -

A lovely, shiny, metallic red-framed wreath card. Niiiice! :)

    Seeds:

Tomato, San Francisco Fog - WOO HOO! Some more!! Doing my Happy Dance (or, at least as close as I can come to same anymore - Heh),...!!

Tomato, Black and Brown Boar - Black and Brown Boar is a beautiful, dark reddish-brown tomato with metallic green stripes. The strong growing plants are heavy producers of 3-4 oz fruit with a tart flavor.

Black and Brown Boar was discovered and stabilized by Brad Gates, Wild Boar Farms, Vacaville, CA. It came from a row of Green Zebra plants at Brad’s farm.

Melon, Banana - 90 days. Banana-shaped fruit with smooth yellow skin and sweet, spicy salmon flesh. 16-24 inches long, 5-8 lbs. It was listed in 1885 by J. H. Gregory's Catalogue, which said, "When ripe it reminds one of a large, overgrown banana... It smells like one, having a remarkably powerful and delicious fragrance."

Melon, Tigger - 90 days. The most amazing looking melon we have grown. The fruit are vibrant yellow with brilliant fire-red, zigzag stripes (a few fruit may be solid yellow), simply beautiful! They are also the most fragrant melons we have tried, with a rich, sweet, intoxicating aroma that will fill a room. The white flesh gets sweeter in dry climates, mild tasting. Small in size, the fruits weigh up to 1 lb. The vigorous plants yield heavily, even in dry conditions. This heirloom came from an Armenian market located in a mountain valley.

Melon, Minnesota Midget - This very small, very early heirloom was introduced in Minnesota in 1948. Measuring just 4inches across, they have sweet, orange flesh and are perfect miniature versions of the "Classic Muskmelon". Compact, 3-4-foot vines produce good yields. I fondly remember these as the only melons our family could get to ripen in Charlo, Montana, about 20 years ago.

    "Yo-yo-yo..." Uber thanks, Christine! A super merry-n-happy to you-n-yours!

    -----

    From lorabell (Laura) -

A totally festively-frigid card featuring a pair of Cardinals (birds, not Vatican). Nice artwork fer shur! My MIL's favorite bird is the Cardinal. Closest we get around here are Cedar Waxwings.

    Seeds:

Pepper, Giant Thai - Medium hot, 4-5" fruits on 30" plants mature quickly from green to dark red and dry fast on the plants. Harvest about 69 days after plants are set outside. Tie several peppers on a long string to hang for drying. CAUTION: Use rubber gloves or clean hot peppers under running water to avoid skin burn from the pepper juice.

Pepper, Korean - This hybrid variety is one of the most popular fresh hot peppers in Korean markets. Fresh green peppers, 12-15 cm in length x 1.7 cm in diameter with medium thick skin, are mild hot and well flavored. Plants in pendent habit set lots of fruits for a long time. This high yielding hybrid is well known for its earliness and tolerance to low temperature. An excellent variety for home garden and fresh markets.

Another pepper I cannot find a description for: "TAKanotsome"? Don't care, I'll happily grow it, assuming it's more that likely a lovely, delicious hottie. ;)

Squash, Buttercup - Buttercup squash is a winter squash belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae. Not to be confused with its cousin, the butternut squash, the squat green buttercup takes its name from its shape, which some say resembles an upside-down acorn with an undersized cap.

The average squash of this type is about 7 inches (17.5 centimeters) in diameter and weighs approximately 3 pounds (1.4 kilograms), though some individual specimens may grow to be over 5 pounds (2.7 kilograms).

The inedible rind is dark green, striated with silvery gray lines. In some cultivars, a cap of paler green sits atop the squash at the blossom end. The buttercup’s dense flesh is dark yellow-orange, sometimes approaching a deeper reddish color. It is worth noting that the more intense the color, the more vitamin A the squash contains.

The flavor of the buttercup squash’s flesh is sweet and nutty, with a creamy consistency more in line with that of a baked sweet potato than a pumpkin, which tends to be more fibrous and watery by comparison. The flesh can tend toward dryness, a flaw that is easily compensated for by cooking method. Steaming and baking are preferred methods of preparation, as both will bring out the sweetness of and add moistness to the flesh.

As a dark yellow-orange vegetable, buttercup squash is a powerhouse of nutrients. A0.5 cup (100 gram) serving contains fewer than 50 calories and little if any fat, but it is loaded with vitamins A, B, and C, as well as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium. It also provides protein and fiber.

Carrot, Atomic Red - When you dig them up they're pink, but when you cook them, they turn scarlet!

Grow carrots the way our ancestors did!

75 days. Full of cancer-fighting Lycopene, these carrots look as good as they taste! Super-nutritious and made for cooking, Atomic Red is the most exciting carrot of the season!

These long, tapered roots reach 8 to 11 inches long. When you unearth them, they are a disapppointingly dull shade of pink. But don't despair! Just clean them off and either bake, steam, or boil them. Immediately they turn brilliant scarlet, improving not only in appearance but also in flavor and nutritional flavor! (Yeah-yeah-yeah, even more!! Hooray for genetic diversity! Totally lovin' it!)

Atomic Red redefines plate appeal. So whether you have reluctant vegetable eaters, want some extra lycopene, or simply enjoy new things, give this great new variety a try!

Y'all are just the best ever! What a wonderful, festive swap! :)

It's a dark and overcast day with snowflurries and we were down at the mailbox (finally) decorating our gate when the mail carrier drove in with seed sunshine! Three cards today--thanks go out to:

Kachana sent a sparkly Christmas tree card with Gulf Coast Penstemon from my wish list!

Katie / kchd sent a neat tree card, almost looks like a wood block print. Inside was JD's Special C Tex heirloom tomato. I'd never heard of this one, so looked it up and it looks great; a large, heavy producer with great flavor. Sounds like a big winner for the pantry!

Margo / smitties sent a beautiful Audubon card with Downy woodpeckers--we love them on the trees and feeders. Inside were coneflower Tomato soup (very exciting!) and penstemon Husker's Red, both from my list! I now have 3 different penstemons to try!

Many thanks to all three of you for thinking of me, and special Christmas and new year's wishes to you and your families.

Recently my mailbox has been full of happiness! Several santas have been good to me.

Thank you Jamie (kjnorris918) for the Christmas card with lettuce and parsley! I will have those in my garden this summer.

Promise (pmb2005) I received your cute Santa card with old fashioned Peony Poppies. Thank you so much! I can't wait to try these in my garden.

From socalgardengal (Christine) I received a pretty glittery card with columbine, Sebring Gold squash, Bianco de Trieste zucchini, and jackpot summer squash. My garden will be plentiful this year! Thank you!

Nancy (nlb52) sent me verbena bonariensis and yarrow mix in a Christmas tree card. Thank you very much - I haven't tried those before, but they look pretty. I'm looking forward to it!

Sue (sdambr) - thank you very much for the wonderful card and seeds. You were very clever on using the card to cushion the seeds - nothing was crushed! I am looking forward to the lime basil, burgundy columbine, pole beans, sweet bell peppers, straight 8 cucumber, and black beauty zucchini!

Heidi (xiangirl) - I love your upcycled card! It was so cute how you had the card with cutouts for the seeds! And I'm happy to try the Balsam (touch me not) and the two cosmos!

Lorabell - I received a cute pine tree card from you today! Thank you so much! I haven't tried these yet - Chervena peppers, May's gold zucchini, Cubanella sweet peppers! And I love Blue Lake Pole beans. I can't wait for these to go into my garden!

    Merry Christmas all!

I am woefully behind on thanks yous, and a bit behind sending out cards.

Thank you to nottougly for the salad mix and the jalapeno peppers. Each year we expand the salad bed, so these will come in handy, and next year I want to make jalpeno jelly again.

Thank you to WilSha for the chicory, dill, kale and lettuce. I see greens in my future. Yay!

Thank you to Panhandle_Seed_Swap for the Webb's Favorite Lettuce. I love the heirloom lettuces. They just don't make them like they used to.

Thank you to kinectentity for the globe thistle. The evil post office machines shredded your envelope, leaving only the top half of my last name and my zip code on the envelope. Luckily I live in such a small town that that was enough to get it to me. The card and seeds were fine.

And finally thank you to cottonwood368 for the Lemon Drops. I am assuming these are peppers. They look like pepper seeds, and the genus name starts with c.

Yes, that is a superhot pepper. Not as hot as Bhut Jolokia, but very, very hot. From your wish list, on "wish lists only thread".

    Cottonwood,

Perfect. Just what I was looking for. Will definitely treat these with the respect due a very hot pepper. Rubbed my eyes once when cutting up a habenero. Not a mistake that you make twice!
