Help with identification

Hello everyone!

I recently moved to a new house, and found a tree that had been cut down in the garden. However it has since started growing again, at an incredible rate, and I was hoping to identify it so that I can make an informed decision whether to take it out or leave it to grow. It looks to be a lovely shady tree, but I prefer to be sure that I'm not encouraging the growth of a pest or alien.

Is anyone able to tell me what it is from the look of the leaves? (If needed, I can upload a photo of the trunk as well). The tops are dark green, with the bottom of the leaves a lighter shade. It has quite a strong smell if you crush the leaves, and though it smells familiar I can't quite identify it. I thought maybe it was a Bay, but even though the leaves have the same shape and the veins look similar, my tree seems to have sharper leaf tips than a bay leaf, which I thought had a roundish tip?

I don't have much gardening experience (yet), so any help at all would be much appreciated!
