South African Native Plants

Proteas in clay pots

While on visit in South Africa I purchased a number of protea plants. I want to plant them (in the Spanish Canary Islands, off the west coast of Africa)into clay pots, mixing purchased garden soil 50:50 with sand. Is this OK, or should I add some lime in order to create a more acid soil?

I found this link very useful, and I can imagine, conditions being similar in las Canarias to California, that you will too. It also has a link to growing them in pots, though, unless you had no choice, it would seem that in the ground would be the superior method.
