clivia miniata leaf damage

I recently acquired a few clivias that had gotten their leaves a bit bruised and tattered. Is it a good idea to try cutting them 6 or 8 inches from the base in the hopes of encouraging new leaves to fill in faster?

RE: clivia miniata leaf damage

I have had a clivia for years and every year when I move it outside there is a certain amount of leaf scorch depending on how careless I've been. I do surgery on the damaged areas, keep the plant watered and fertilized with fish emulsion and it flowers about once a month throughout the year, sometimes throwing up several stalks in succession and it is not a large plant. It gets very little sun in the winter and in summer it goes out to a northeast facing corner where it gets a bit of dappled shade. I find this plant is very tough. If I forget to water or fertilize it doesn't seem to mind and it replaces damaged leaves quickly.

Damaged leaves are replaced each year when growth resumes in the fall. I would cut off any damage if it bothers you.

Leave as much leaf as possible. They do drip from the cuts so make sure you leave them to sit over newspaper until it stops.

If you cut off most of the leaves, you will not incourage it to produce more, they don't grow that way. Most plants produce a set amount of leaves each year (4-8 is common).
