Mulberry trees 'smoking'
| | |
Posted by Petria S Africa (My Page) on Tue, Aug 31, 04 at 7:54
| I have a mulberry tree growing in front of my office. The mulberries are developing fast but still very green. Some turning slightly pinkish. I have noticed a curl of "smoke" coming from the berries every now and then - well I think that is where they are coming from. The smoke/powder is emitted and a few seconds later evaporates in the air. I have been unable to find out what this is and no nursery can help. Finding anything on mulberries on the websites - zilch! One horticulturist/gardener on the web thought it might be some kind of fungus releasing its spores but suggested I try this forum. Hope someone can shed some light on this very interesting phenomenon. |

Petria I suggest you post your question on the Fruit and Orchards forum or the Pests and Diseases forum as you are more likely to get an answer there. This forum is for indigenous South African plants , and the mulberry is not an indigenous species , in fact it is classed as a Category 1 alien invader and is supposed to be removed from all gardens. Mulberries germinate from seed like crazy and the birds eat them and spread their seeds far and wide , resulting in small mulberry trees coming up all over the place. Personally I have never seen or heard of this smoke thing on mulberries. By the way where in S.A. do you stay? |
