 o
Schizostylus, kaffir lily, clivia etc etc

No slur intended, unfortunately kaffir is a name that, once understood, is memorable for its inappropriateness.
I am aware that this isnt hardy and I am wondering how it would over winter submegred below the ice line, which was 2" last winter?
Also will it prosper as a marginal probably 4" of water over the crown? I have 5 plants that I want to form a clump and have them in an approximately 9"x14" tray so bringing it in isnt really feasible.

Hi,

I hate to give bad news, but I have found that Clivia miniata won't tolerate wet soils for long. As far as water over the crown goes, I'd have to guess that would kill the plant soon enough--within a couple of weeks?

The plants are notoriously sensitive to prolonged exposure to just-below-freezing cold. Planting under the ice line works for some bulbs and bulbous plants. It isn't an obvious approach for overwintering Clivia because the foliage would surely be lost and such can take a long time to regrow.

the "true" schizostyllis (aka hesperantha, now) is as hardy as montbretia/crocosmia and should do well in most parts of ireland. the problem is that both unrelated south african plants shared the same "common name" resulting in much horticultural confusion.

This may explain why it is still sch...... here http://lists.ibiblio.org/pipermail/pbs/2003-February/012745.html

I have also visited http://www.clivianet.org/ and am now confused, is clivia a correct name for sch.........

"clivia" is both the common name and scientific name of clivia miniata a tender amaryllis relative from south africa commonly cultivated indoors in cool climates and sometimes known as "kaffir lily". schizostyllis coccinium is a member of the iris family from south africa also called "kaffir lily" (also "scarlet river lily") and is relatively hardy in milder parts of temperate zones. they do not look alike, are not related, and the only things that connect them is a south african origin and a confusingly shared common name. the plants you have are properly designated schizostyllis and are not clivia.

Thank you that would explain why I thought the first one I saw was an Iris.
