GARDENING GUIDESGreat Design Plant: Milkweed
Quit cringing. This not-weed plant is a sight to behold in the garden, has a delicious vanilla scent and is a magnet for butterflies
Full StoryIn New Zealand, the Monarch butterfly lives here year-round. The milkweed species we have growing here were formerly known as Asclepies spp. but have been reclassified as Gomphocarpus fruticosus and G. physocarpus. We know them as Swan Plant and Giant Swan Plant, but of course there are other names.
I need to shift some small seedlings - only a few inches high - from the north of the country to the South Island, where it is much cooler, and they will be grown on in a plastic-house, and I am wondering what is the best way of sending them. I am thinking of uplifting the seedlings (only a few inches tall) and wrapping them in bundles in wet newspaper, and air-freighting them insie a polystyrene container.
Suggestions welcome!
