layered maraschino cherry salvia...now what?

Hello everyone,

I've never been to this forum but I hope you don't mind helping me anyway.

I have a 4 year old maraschino cherry salvia. It doesn't spread like some of the other salvias like black and blue. The plant just kind stays there and grows bigger and bigger in a clump. Hope that makes sense.

Anyway, somehow soil/mulch got put on a stem (I didn't purposefully do this). While doing one of my look around walks today, I noticed that the plant has managed to get itself successfully layered.

I have wanted more of this particular plant but couldn't see paying some of the prices my local nurseries are asking. So I am REALLY wanting to do this new plant right.

What do I do???? and When???? Should I cut the layered plant from the mother and let it sit till spring? Should I dig it up now and move to another part of the garden? Should I wait till more sure springtime? The plants and I are all fooled this year but logically I know spring isn't for a couple more months.

I appreciate any tips to help me successfully move this new plant. thanks

Michelle
