That looks a lot like Salvia puberula from Hidalgo. I gave UC Berkeley Strawberry Canyon a start of it way back in the late 80s, calling it then Salvia involucrata from Hidalgo. It is distinctly different from the old standard form of involucrata called bethelii.

Thank you so much as always! I will definitely visit the UCB garden tomorrow and take a look. The color appeared to be very similar to the one on Robin's site but the "rosebud" feature threw me off. It doesn't take much.
