Brown seeds

I have just done an experiment with some home grown Salvia patens seed. I put two groups, of 8 black seeds and 7 mid brown seeds, onto the same piece of kitchen roll, which was dampened with a solution of copper compound to prevent rot. I then sealed this inside a polythene bag and left it in a warm place. Within two weeks all the black seeds had germinated, but none of the brown ones.

Is it true that brown seeds are generally not viable, or am I trying to read too much into a small sample?
