In years when I grow it I usually leave it in a large pot. The first freeze here in southern New Jersey can occur any time from late September which is about the same time leucantha starts to flower. By dragging them into the garage on evenings when a freeze is predicted I can usually extend the bloom well into December. It is a pain but worth the effort.

It roots from cuttings very easily which can then be stored inside. August would be a good time to take the cuttings. You also might want to try Waverly which appears to be part leucantha. It blooms by late summer or even earlier.

I live above San Francisco...zone 16 I think and started a rather ambitious sage/yarrow garden for butterflies and bees, hummers. The Leucanthas have taken over and are smothering the smaller plants. I am in the middle of moving plants around, pruning etc and was wondering if it is o.k. to dig up and transplant leucanthas now or ever???

I'm transplanting some of my salvia leucantha right now and don't expect a problem. It should not be cut back until early Spring, though. When there is new basal growth in about February it's safe to cut back the old growth, leaving the new growth. If you cut it back this time of year it may die through the winter. Hollow stems allow water to enter the stems and the plant may rot.
