How Should I Treat Mexican Bush Sage in Zone 6?

I lived in Zone 8a and loved Mexican Bush Sage (salvia leucantha) as it is beautiful and the hummingbirds love it. I have moved and now live in Zone 6.

I ran across two Mexican Bush Sage plants at a local garden center last autumn. I bought them cheap and I have successfully overwintered both plants although they are looking very spindly.

I'd like to find out the best time to prune them as well as any tips for overwintering and propogating them in the future. Also, should I leave them in containers all summer? Or plant them in the ground and then dig them up in autumn?

Thanks for your help.
