Cold frame advice

Last fall my neighbor helped me trash pick a sliding door and yesterday I framed it with straw bales. This is my first cold frame. I understand the basics of keeping it partly uncovered during the day. But how should I handle the plants that will go into it - mostly greggii/microphylla rooted cuttings and seedlings and some other more tropical stuff. Should I first harden them off a bit by setting them in sheltered spot before putting them in. I've seen the bad things cold frames can do and don't want to risk all of winter's work.
