I assume you are referring to Salvia greggii `Sierra San Antonio', with yellow and orange bicolored flowers, sometimes referred to as S. x jamensis `Sierra San Antonio'.

Like S. greggii and all of its relatives, the stems are brittle and will not survive dogs or children running through them. Dragging or pivoting hoses around them is also not a good idea. This is true for all small woody perennials.

Yes that is the plant; it was so pretty when I bought it but has been one of my most troublesome plants.

Can you recommend a sage that would be more tolerant of occasional dogs?

In the meantime, if my sage doesn't totally die then I'll move it to a safer spot.

I'm assuming you live in some place like Sacramento, CA with a Mediterranean climate. If so, check out Salvia aurea, (S. africana-lutea) which forms a clump of stems from a base. The wood on xeric Old World sages is much more forgiving than the small woody xeric New World species.

Aurea has brownish-orange flowers. There are others with different colors, like S. muirii (blue), S. chamelaeagnea (white and violet). All of these are South African in origin. There are other species in this group worth looking into.
