Does anyone add lime & also?

I'm reviewing the plant conditions needed for the plants I purchased late last Fall and the ones I have that are seedlings I was able to Winter Sow - have 50 species sprouted so far. I was reading about Semiatrata - it says a light sprinkling of lime on the roots in the spring is beneficial (Betsy's book) and I definitely trust her advice. Any others that would benefit from lime being added to the soil and is it also important to know if your soil is alkaline or acidic if they are going into the ground. Actually most of mine will be in raised beds or containers, but still?? Also what are the meanings of cultivar vs. species?

Thanks
