Out of the zone salvias

I grown the hardy salvias that are readily found in the upper Midatlantic. They are nice but I drool over those that can be grown in the drier, warmer parts of the country--especially those that will grow like a bush. Can those of us in the northeast grow and get these larger salvias to flower if we treat them like the "tropicalesque" gardens? That is, dig them up yearly and overwinter in a garage or sunny room? Or otherwise, propogate them for the next year? I know the type I long for won't survive in my soil or through a wet winter. I'm also not sure how to tell if a salvia won't like my climate *at all* even in summer, so would be a no-go waste of money.
