CA Kate z9

My daughter and I went nursery hopping on Sunday. I came home with a number of new Salvias:

S. leucophylla 'Figueroa'

S. 'Starlight'

S. Uliginosa

S. mexicana 'Limelight'

S. mexicana x hispanica 'Byron Flynt'

S. buchananii

S. guatanitica 'Purple Majesty'

S. 'Maraschino'

S. microphylla 'Hot Lips'

S. 'Teresa'

S clevelandii 'Allen Chickering'

S. greggii 'Deep Red'

S. muelleri 'Royal Purple Sage'

S. x 'Sierra San Antonio'

S. officialis 'Berggarten'

Some are new cultivars. I've potted-up the smallest into 1 gal. pots to grow a bigger root system before planting in the garden next fall.

    I think I'm jealous - NO
I know I'm jealous - just for the sure fun of the "hunt & the find".
I see you picked up your Teresa's and you got some nice sounding names of Salvias I don't know. I love my Uliginosa - the blue flowers were outstanding. I put one in a very large container to contain it and another in ground, liked water. Enlighten me. what is a "Starlight"?
Thanks, Westelle and congratulations on your new babies - "MOM".

    Thank you!
    S. 'Starlight' is a cross of S. apiana and S. mellifera; AND I just found out that it's size is 6' x 9' with white flowers. I guess I will need to rethink where I'm going to plant them...... Hmmmmmm ..... Back Hill Garden..... Yup!

Geesh Westelle, too bad you're too far. I would love to find a place around here that sold that many Salvias! Sounds like a lot of fun!

No kidding Westelle, I envy you too. Wish nurseries here would get the message to get some new salvias for a change. Mail order is the only way for me.

Skrip: The trip was even long for me! Our 'hop' took place in and around Santa Rosa -- a 5 hour drive from where I live in the Central Valley. I do have a daughter who lives in Benicia, so I had a delightful stop-over there before going to Santa Rosa (Emerisa), Petaluma (Cottage Gardens), and Fulton (Calflora). Calistoga Al recommended these nurseries.

I remember that both Emerisa and Calflora will ship.

There are always 4 or 5 vendors at the Chico Farmers Market on saturdays with a pretty good choice, also you can call or e-mail canyon creek nursery and place a order and he will bring them to the sat market ($4.00) and well rooted.canyoncreeknursery.com

Stop your California nursery chat, I am so jealous that I'm turning green! I have spent so many hours on the Calflora & Las Pilitas sites just drooling... and so many of the Salvias can't even grow here (wet, clay soils) ... but I can try... and dream...

Rosewoman: I would think that there are growers that specialize in Salvias that do well in your region. Why don't you e-mail Rich Dufresne thru' this forum. I know he is a breeder/grower himself, but also may know of others in your area.

There are Westelle, but there are so many more out your way & the pictures on those 2 websites have made me a Californian wanna be. Also Annie's Annuals , sigh.
I live in an area where even the Greggiis are marginally hardy, the only sure things around here are the superbas & we all know how exciting they are.

I know just what you mean.... there are all those Salvias I CAN'T grow just because it gets too friggen' HOT and DRY here...... it just fries the poor plants. Why is it we always want what we can't have?!

( Don't get too despondant over missing Annie's. It's not my favorite nursery.)

Westelle, why is Annie's not a favorite nursery for you. Is it the location?

Ron: I don't care much for any store that isn't "organized", and, to my way of thinking, Annie's isn't. I dislike having to check every table/plant to see what it is. If I want Salvias :^) I want to go to that area and find ALL the Salvias, etc.
It's just a personal foible of mine and it doesn't seem to bother other Annie's shoppers one bit.

    Rosewoman,
When I lived in Maryland I grew lots of Salvis and treated them as annuals, my Black and Blue even made it through 2 mild winters there. The plants don't grow as large as they do here (I'm amazed to see some the size of small cars) but they always bloomed beautifully in full sun from June to October.

I was at Lowes today, they got their first shipment of S. Black and Blue beautiful blooming flowers at $14.99 per pot.
So glad I've taken cuttings of my plants and don't have to buy them at that price.

Westelle, which of those nurseries did you get the 'Starlight' at? I grow as many native salvias as possible and would love to add this one. The Sonoma nurseries are my regular hangouts in spring.

    What a haul!

Thanks Westelle--and I was just there last Saturday. I'll be there this weekend again and see if they have any plants left after your visit :)
