Salvia eremostachya in California

Salvia eremostachya occurs on the desert slopes of the Peninsular Ranges, from near Palm Desert, Calif., south into northern Baja Calif., Mexico. These photos were taken on 11 Feb (close view of foliage and emerging flowers), 29 Mar and 3 Apr 2008 (last of the five photos) near Dos Palmas Spring, on the north slopes of the Santa Rosa Mtns., Riverside Co., Calif. The elevation averages around 3600 ft. If you're looking at a road atlas, it's south-southwest of Palm Desert, CA. If you use Google Earth, a representative location is 33.61790 N, 116.42570 W.

Great pictures of a beautiful Salvia! Unfortunately we can never get this one to flower in the UK, as the climate is all wrong. We even have 3 inches of snow today, 6th April!

Well, they get snow occasionally where these plants occur :-) But the climate is very dry. There's a small palm oasis within walking distance of the plants in the picture, which must be one of the highest (in elevation) natural groves of W. filifera.
