Abnormal Purple Stem

Hi, my salvia divinorum plant has developed a strange purple stem. the bottom 1/4th of my stem is a very dark purple and as my plant grows the purple coloring continues to spread. any ideas what could be causing this?

That is normal, but it usually colors up on the leaf stem. Your plant looks healthy. The related S. recurva and S. madrensis do the same thing.
