Has anyone transplanted S. guaranitica 'Omaha Gold'?

If you did, can you please share your stories?

My S. guaranitica ‘Omaha Gold’ is approx. 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide. 3 woody stems with diameter of 1-1.5 inches each come up from its base. It looks like a shrub now and has been always planted in the ground for last 1.5 years.

I am a novice gardener started to garden a little before my first S. guaranitica was planted. I love this plant and love how it looks: woody stems, upright and not too dense.

Currently it is planted too close to the fence for my new plan. I would like to move it 1-2 feet away from the fence so I can put a trellis and grow a vine behind my guaranitica to create a deep green background for its beautiful foliage. But if the risk of loosing this plant is too large then I will alter my plan. So I am seeking your advice here.

I have transplanted S. greggii, S. elegans, S. iodantha x tubiflora, and S. serpyllifolia before. All but S. serpyllifolia are success. Here "transplant" means that the plant was in the ground and was move to a different spot in the ground.

Thank you for reading my posting. And I also would like to thank you all for your input in this forum. I am learning a lot by reading other postings.

Hi. I was waiting to see if anyone else would respond. I don't have 'Omaha Gold,' I have 'Black & Blue.' I have transplanted smaller plants without a problem. I have not tried to transplant anything as large as your plant. I would think if you got most of the roots and watched and watered it carefully, that you would be okay. But larger plants are trickier than small ones. Plus, mine die back to the ground in the winter so they are easier to dig up and move.

Hopefully someone else will respond with more experience.

I have not transplanted a salvia but have done large plants/small trees. Since you have done others perhaps this will be something you already know but:
About 4-6 weeks before transplant use a shovel to cut a ring around the plant/tree in the size you will dig the transplant. This will prune the roots to a manageable root ball. Don't fertilize but do water to help the plant recover.
When transplanting I use a plastic tarp next to the plant so I can slide it to the new hole without too much tearing between the upper (branches) and lower (roots) parts.
I also cut the plant back at transplant so it won't exhaust itself trying to support the leaves with less roots.
I put an umbrella or other shading material over the plant to protect from sun for about 4-5 days. If wind is a problem you need to wrap it or spray with stuff to protect leaf moisture loss (can't think of the name).
As insurance you might want to take some cuttings just in case the transplant fails for whatever reason.
Good luck

Becky and Denise, thank you very much for your reply. You do not know how much you are helping me.

I have not done what Denise suggested before and I will follow this method now on. Last month, I transplanted 5’ tall Abutilons and until this weekend, they looked dry and no sign of new growth. I was traumatized by this experience so your suggestions are very helpful. Thank you again.
