Hot Lips questions

I have several Salvia Hot Lips in my garden (various locations). I do not see any signs of life on them yet. In past years they haven't gone completely dormant, so I'm wondering if I should wait and see or replace them all? In one of the areas I have a couple of magenta salvia (?) and they stayed evergreen through this winter.
My questions are:
1) give the Hot Lips more time?
2) What do you think the Magenta ones might be?
I'm in N. Ga. zone 7
Thanks for your help. |

Have you had a colder than normal spring? This could be delaying it. I had a hotlips that lost it foliage and they returned without a problem just had to wait. On your magenta I will need more information. Is it woody like your Hot Lips? is the foliage like Hot lips? Is the foliage down at ground level? If you could post a picture that would help. Art |

| My Hotlips was deciduous this winter (in contrast to last year) and is only just now starting to show signs of leafing out. Like Art said, I had attributed it to the repeated cold snaps this year. Not any really extended cold weather, but it's been a roller coaster here in NC. They're predicting another possible frost early in the week. San Carlos Festival and a few other greggii/microphylla/hybrids have not lost foliage this winter, but many have. |

| It was by recent standards an unusually hard winter. Even though I would be justified in thinking all will be well eventually, the defoliation of most of the greggii and microphylla does make for a worried mind. It took years to collect them and make cuttings and establish them, so the prospect of a major dieback makes my mind far from easy. These sages still retain a few leaves; Raspberry Delight, microphylla X Ark Rd Pink, microphylla X Ark Rd 3, microphylla San Carlos Festival, a few greggii Wild Thing, Cherry Queen and one greggii Lipstick. The list of sages sans all leaves is a much longer one, but this includes several first-timers including micrphylla Hot Lips. |
