Salvia clevelandii in container?

Since it doesn't survive Pacific NW winters, I'm wondering if folks have had any success growing them in a large container. Some plants that need dry conditions seem to adapt to a container. Will it thrive and flower? Would grit need to be added for drainage? Would a clay pot be better? Could you park it under the eaves in the winter and bring in the garage only when temps get below a certain threshold? Thanks for any thoughts about this. I love the aroma!
