Should I really cut back May Night?

I bought them blooming earlier this year. Now there are just spires. I can't tell whether the spires have buds or not. From googling, it seems they are probably spent.

I don't recall ever cutting back my Marcus. Should I really cut back the spires of my May Nights to make it reflower? And if so, how far? I see varying info online, but trust you salvia experts' expertise.

They are in pots, receive dappled sun in the morning, and full sun from about 2 to 6pm. The Marcus (god rest its soul) did fine here until this past winter.
