Salvias in the new scree garden at the J. C. Raulston Arboretum

Saturday the 19th of May was the annual picnic of the local chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society, held at the J. C. Raulston Arboretum of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. I was told of the new scree garden, in which a lot of Salvias had been planted.

I went to the picnic with my old digital camera and took the images in the web page in the link. Most of these are Salvia greggii hybrids or garden sports.

Thanks for sharing Rich. You got some nice pics and I bet they'll look even better after they're established. Maybe you can go back and take some more photos then.

I planted a 'Lipstick' in 2005 and it made it through its first winter and second, but not through the late freeze we had in April unless it's just going to be very late to recover.
I'm curious. Do you know how deep the rock is in their scree garden and what they put under it?

Your comments about spacing were very interesting. In the four hundred foot sage hedge I gave four feet of space between plants and wondered if I was overdoing it. Because the area is very dry, hot, and sandy, it seemed wise to treat them the way I've seen plants growing in the California deserts - with empty space between them.
