salvia argentea winter survival

I planted 4 salvia argentea in 2005. All four survived the winter and flowered the next year. I cut them back. In 2007, three survived and flowered. I cut them back after they finished flowering. This spring I have two left.
Those furry silvery leaves are so attractive - now I have four more sittng out in the driveway waiting to get planted.
Note that these have all been planted on a sandy, dry bank. When I tried them in the regular garden bed, they didn't survive the first winter. |

Is it possible that a couple of flowers set seed? S.argentea is a biennial by removing the flowers it does not finish it's life cycle.Sometime's this works,I have done the same thing only to have several die while others live I just have to replace them. Hope that helps. |

| No, the survivors aren't seedlings (I wish!). The old plants sent up new growth from the base after they bloomed and that's what wintered over. I let them set seed in hopes they would self-sow -so far, not so good. |
