Far. What zone are you in? Is it still dormant or actively growing. They are rugged and hard to hurt. I suggest sticking your cuttings in soil to root those too.

Thanks for asking this question I have a greggii that has gotten really big and is looking straggly. I have been wondering about cutting it back and letting it throw off new growth. It did not die back during the winter.

I've got four S. greggi and they too get scraggly. I generally wait until their main blooming period is over, (don't want to discourage the hummingbirds!). I then shear the larger plants with a hedge trimmer and take out all the branches that are leafing only at the tips. Generally, I cut them back to about half size, (I've made the mistake of cutting them too much and killing plants in the past).
