I don't know much about the S. nemerosa, but the S. officinalis can be divided in late spring or early autumn. :)

Great question about Salvia nemerosa.

I have seven very full 'East Friesland' salvia nemerosa that may need dividing in the next year or so.

Nemerosa and officinalis belong to two different groups of European sages. Officinalis does not form underground offshoots unless planted more deeply than it is sown in the pot. It does layer itself, and these stems that root as they touch the ground are the best to take.

Nemerosa does generate numerous side shoots underground, and these can be split off the main stem providing that the independant side stems have their own roots.

Rich, so this fall, can I dig up the entire salvia 'East Friesland', divide it in half or in thirds and then replant?
