After all these years at least six possibly seven, it has returned and spread too. I don't know why except we had a very mild winter

Maybe they did not get discovered by pine voles. They will clear out a patch of guaraniticas by eating the tubers. If they leave some small ones and some attached stolons, these may come back if they are not too stressed by cold.

Well it was a mild winter so that might be the case. As far as voles go their population might be going down.I think it's cyclical. Also I use loads of sharp gravel. Although I don't have any owl nestboxes I can only hope they stopped by for some dinner.

Because of last years drought vole numbers were probably down. Voles have never done much damage to my patches, but in the winter of 06-07 they ate several hundred Crocosmea Lucifer corms, nearly wiping out a very old patch. Last winter was so mild that I saw a couple of nice returns. In Indigo Spires is now four feet tall and blooming. Some years they do half survive but until this year they all died after making some attempts at growth in early spring. Involucrata also survived. Guaranitica Van Remsen seems truely tender, I tried them in various gardens seperated by miles and none returned. The strangest tender surviver this year was Cuphea David Verity. I had given one to someone who lives nearby and hers has returned.
