Totally confused by the name

Is Russian sage a Salvia? I was looking for a "blue/purple flowering perennial" to plant in an hot/dry area of my townhouse back yard - full southern exposure, white stucco back drop - 1 ft wide x about 5 feet long bordered by a cement patio. Russian sage was suggested and now I'm very confused as to whether it is a herb plant or whether it is something totally different and not even a salvia. Please help

Hello confused,

You are correct in thinking russian sage is not a salvia,It is Petrovskia atriplicifolia. It looks like a salvia but is not. There are a few different plants out there like the lepechinia, phlomis which common names are sages but are not. I think you are right and it is to confuse us.

The genus Petrovskia is closely related to Salvia, has a similar odor, and is as tough as nails. I should work in southern Canada. It develops a deep taproot and is not easy to move, though.

I can't help it. The spelling is Perovskia. :) And as stated, it's in the mint family along with Salvia, basil, oregano, etc.

I love it just as I love my Salvia children. :D
