too late to cut back?

Is it too late to shear back East Friesland and May Night salivas? I was hoping to get them to re-bloom before cold weather. After the intial flush in May I only trimmed to the bottom of the bloom. Needless to say, they haven't bloomed since.

I can't comment on Friesland, since I don't grow any, but I've kept my May Night deadheaded since planting it back in early spring and it has been in constant bloom.
I always cut back below the spent flower spike to the next set of leaves, and no more than that. It seems to work because the plant has been full of flowers all season and is climbing all over its neighbors - I'd have planted it elsewhere had I known it had the potential to be such a bully. Are you feeding them? If so, it might be best to stop. I don't fertilize mine. Someone told me I'd end up with a bunch of foliage and no flowers. I don't even water mine anymore - it survives on what mother nature provides.
