Why does May Night look ratty?

I have a few Salvia May Nights that always look ratty. Can someone tell me why? Am I doing something wrong? They are in a sunny spot, well-draining, fertile soil. The bed is on the dry side, but we have had tons of rain this year. I fertilized the bed in the Spring. They looked halfway ok until after they bloomed; then I cut the blooming parts back as instructed, and now they are just horribly ratty-looking and eaten to shreds by I think, grasshoppers. Do they need more water than I am giving them? Do they like less fertile soil? Maybe this just isn't the right plant for me there and I should rip it out and try something else in that spot?
