Hi to you all,
Californian Salvias are difficult to cultivate in the UK. The climate is not compatible, and whilst we can grow healthy-looking plants of S. clevelandii, S. dorrii, S. pachyphylla, it is almost impossible to get them to flower, such a pity as they are all stunning. On the other hand, S. carduacea will flower 2-3 months after sowing seed. This is one of the most beautiful Salvias I have ever grown, even though it dies after the short flowering season. Care must be taken when harvesting seed, as the prickles can get embedded in your fingers and thumbs. Another which will flower easily from seed is S. columbariae, but this is hardly spectacular like S. carduacea.
