salvia reptans West Texas form

| I bought three of these plants in May one from High Country Gardens and two from a local nursery mostardi. They are very similar so far except much greener to salvia azurea. The only problem that I have is I finally got one bloom this weekend I wonder if anyone grows them and if so Do they prefer an acid or alkaline soil? I know they like a rocky well drained soil and sun. but wasn't sure if I should fertilize them or not to get more blooms Thanks. Here's a picture of one and only bloom

Hi Sarah,
What about the one I sent you-the upright form? Mine still hasn't flowered yet this year- it's way behind last year & it was new last year!

| Hi Rose, Not yet. Maybe it prefers rain? Last year rained all summer this summer we had more sun. How about you? My salvia azurea also hasn't bloomed but that never blooms until at least Labor Day. Sarah |

How was it different from the one you have? Narrower leaves?
I wonder why they are so slow to bloom this year? All of mine have been. |

| One plant is blooming how about yours?I don't know why I think it might be because it's in a sandy sunny spot the other two are in a heavier clay soil. My salvia ugliosa just started blooming and it's not doing as well as last year My salvia azurea is healthy but not blooming However my salvia greggii's are doing great. as is my chiapensis,involucrata and discolor. | My S. reptens is about to bloom--it's in alkaline clay with landscape cloth and river rock over it. The water here is alkaline, as well. My S. greggii varieties, my S. chamaedryoides, and my S. pachyphylla are the happiest of plants, and blooming their fool heads off. I'm in a very dry climate. |

| My S.reptans West Texas Form is in full flower now after a much needed rain provided by Ophelia. Mine reseeded well this past year so now I have the fullest flowering stand I have had yet. They can be a real tease putting out a flower here and there for a long time and all of a sudden- boom! I really like the texture in the border the rest of the year too. |

| FINALLY! My Salvia reptans is beginning to bloom. The flowers and foliage look much like the photograph above. I think the flowers look very much like the flowers on the annual blue lobelia plants--charming! Now I'm on to exhorting other late-blooming Salvias to bloom (S. elegans, S. azurea, S. leucantha, and I just planted Salvia sclarea and Salvia hians (sale plants). |

Beautiful pictures, Sarah! I am just now seeing buds on reptans. I have 2 azureas- one from seed & one from a MAG swapper. The odd thing is that one has light green foliage & one has dark green, I'm curious to compare the blooms when the 2nd one starts. Do you know if there's a difference between S. azurea & S. azurea grandiflora? I can't figure that out on the net. Maybe someone knows...

| Thanks Rose, There is a difference I looked it up in Betsey Clebsech's book and cullina's wildflower book one is the eastern version the other is the western one has lighter colored leaves blooms earlier in july and a more upright habit plus paler flowers one is var grandiflora also known as pitcheri or pitcher sage other is var azurea. |

HCG has salvia reptans listed as zone 5-10. Wish that were true! I've heard 7, Ginny Hunt says 9 & I prefer to be conservative & bring them in the garage!
Well the blooms on both my azureas look the same-the lighter blue-which I love. Thanks for the info & pix. So the grandiflora doesn't have larger flowers?

| Maybe I will bring one in the garage and leave the other out. I was lucky this year I had alot of salvias come back or reseed vanhouttii some came back purple some red all my greggii's also my urica came back which really shocked me. So both your azureas are the same? Another salvia that just started blooming is the meyeri I don't know if it's hardy though. It looks like urica. Sarah |
