First time doing salvia... didn't work...

This was my first time, me and my friends picked up about 4 grams of 10x extract each. We smoked about 1/2 gram ea. on the 1st seccion using a pipe holding it in for about 30 seconds, nothing happened. so next seccion we smoke about 2 smallish bowls ea. and still we felt nothing. We got it from a hemp shop near where we live so I doubt they'de sell us fake salvia. We also tried a water bong but it didn't help. Does anyone have any ideas why it didn't work?
