May night looks terrible

I know it's late in the season but my may night looks awful. Any suggestions? Should i cut to the ground? Fertilize? Compost? Or just grin and bear it?
Thanks

Depends on not only your USDA zone, but soil type and climate (arid, alpine, subtropical). Do you know how to make a rock garden scree environment?

I cut mine down about a month ago. It's been pretty dry, and the foliage was very ratty. I cut it down to the ground, and at the same time trimmed and tidied up a bunch of other perennials.
