Depends on not only your USDA zone, but soil type and climate (arid, alpine, subtropical). Do you know how to make a rock garden scree environment?

I cut mine down about a month ago. It's been pretty dry, and the foliage was very ratty. I cut it down to the ground, and at the same time trimmed and tidied up a bunch of other perennials.
