S. microphylla 'San Carlos Festival'

I am creating a full-sun low-water garden next to our patio and am considering transplanting an existing 'San Carlos Festival' to this area. In summer, this spot gets direct sun from morning to afternoon. I don't mind giving an additional drink during the hottest months, but I don't want plants in this spot that depend on weekly watering throughout the year.

How tolerant is SCF of hours of direct sun with occasional water in clay soil? I love this Salvia and would put one in every area of the yard if room allowed.

It's about as tough a S. microphylla that you will ever find. Hot Lips would come in as a close second. I would work in some drainage and humus into the clay soil, if your plot is not already developed garden soil.

Thank you, Rich. It certainly is one of my favorite Salvias we've ever grown. We also grow Hot Lips, and I agree with your comment on it too.
