When to prune Salvias for repeat bloom

I have just completed my second summer with Salvia "Cardonna" While it was gorgeous while it lasted, I was somewhat disapointed by its limited bloom time. It's blooms were faded by 4th of July weekend so I cut it back -- some I cut to the ground, others I cut halfway back as a test. While there has been new basal growth on all of them -- there are no flowers. Should I be doing something differently?

I noticed on this forum that a lot of you said you preferred "Cardonna" to some of the other perennial sages.

If I want a longer bloom period should I also be planting May Night and Purple Rain which are both reputed to have long bloom periods.

Thanks,

Suzanne
