Is this salvia hians?

| I have 3 of these flowering and the seed was labeled salvia hians. I think the seed came from J. Hudson. I can post a picture of the entire plant, but none of them look particularly attractive - rather scraggly.

| Don't think so, Becky. The real Salvia hians is so elusive, it is just not true! What you have could be anything, since Chinese Salvias hybridise in an immensely promiscuous way! Also bear in mind that the true Salvia hians is alleged to have a dark blue/violet upper lip, and a lower lip that is mostly white. Again, S. hians does not come from China, more from the Southern Himalayas, Northern India and Pakistan, and just to add to the muddle, it is a very variable species. It has been known to hybridise with other Asian species, Brian Kabbes in Holland has S. 'Amber' and S. 'Gloomy' which are thought to be crosses of hians x flava, and hians x megalantha!!! But you have a beautiful Salvia, and I would suggest that it may be a "FORM" of S. dolichantha or S. przewalkskii. A close-up photo of a leaf may help a little. Dont't think I have helped at all, but enjoyed the conversation! Robin. |

| Isn't `Amber' a cross of glutinosa with flava v. megalantha? About hians, the one I grew from seed from P. Kohli and sons of Srinagar had a really fat tube, to allow a pretty good sized bumblebee to enter, like many of the large-tubed Penstemons of the American west. |

| If there are any seeds from these plants, I will label them przewalskii. Since I did plant some seeds that are supposed to be przewalskii, it will be interesting to see if they are the same plant. |

| Becky, that beautiful flower is just like the one I grew from seed from J. L. Hudson too. I am growing out S. przewalskii so we can compare notes. It is making a huge and splendid rosette. Joseph |

| Thanks, Joseph! I finally got around to taking a picture of one of the plants. I have several and this one has the best foliage - the others have black spots on a lot of the leaves. I am a little concerned about that.

| Those leaves look very much like the supposed hians I just bought, Becky. I'm hoping I might get some blooms before winter hits so I can tell if mine is for real. :) Brenda |
